Now, 12 years later, Schroeder wears a bionic hand designed by the startup Aether Biomedical, and it's business as usual for him. Aether's hand, called the Zeus, can lift up to 77 pounds and switch between 12 different customizable grip patterns in real time. Aether works with upper limb amputees, and anyone with an amputation level between the wrist and the shoulder can use its Zeus hand. More than 200 patients are using Aether's Zeus hand, and like other bionic hands, it works by translating the electrical signals in the arm muscles. Aether's Zeus hand is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it's covered by all major insurance payers.

Washington in mid-October issued a general license lifting through April sanctions on the country's oil production and exports. POLICY SHIFTThe U.S. imposed sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry to try to oust President Nicolas Maduro, whose 2018 re-election it considers a sham. CNN —Cruise, General Motors’ self-driving vehicle subsidiary, has recalled all 950 of its autonomous vehicles for a software update. Late last month, Cruise paused all its public testing operations while it investigated the incident that led to the recall. GM had announced Monday that it was pausing production test versions of the Cruise Origin, a self driving vehicle GM and Cruise designed jointly with Honda. After striking the pedestrian, the Cruise AV attempted to pull off to side of the road to avoid causing an obstruction. Cruise doesn’t sell its self-driving vehicles so all the cars are owned by either Cruise or GM, which produces the heavily modified Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles.

The drivers have acknowledged Sunday's showdown at Phoenix Raceway lacks the hype of years past, but NASCAR pushed back as the weekend arrived. “We have a playoff system that I believe is the toughest in sports,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said. Cutouts depicting images of oil operations are seen outside a building of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in Caracas, Venezuela January 28, 2019. U.S. sanctions that were in place on Venezuela since 2019 largely blocked state-run oil company PDVSA from exporting to its chosen markets. That changed last week, but Washington's six-month relaxation of the measures is too limited to spur new crude production. PDVSA also is in talks with Mercuria Energy and Sahara Energy on spot sales, the sources said. The Italian company and Spain's Repsol (REP.MC) have been in negotiations with PDVSA for months to expand gas output in Venezuela.

Leonard Allan Cure, 53, died on Monday after a Camden County sheriff's deputy shot him; the officer has not been officially identified. The Camden County Sheriff's Office said in a posting online the video was released because of rumors and misinformation, but did not elaborate. A representative for the sheriff's office did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment on Wednesday. The deputy later told Cure on the video that Cure was driving 100 miles per hour (160 kph) on Interstate 95 in southern Georgia. Cure's family watched the video Wednesday at a Georgia Bureau of Investigation office with their attorney just before it was released by Camden County, in southern Georgia.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — For people around the world, the green leaves that sprouted from a scorched, 150-year-old banyan tree in the heart of devastated Lahaina symbolized hope following Maui’s deadly wildfire this summer. Before colonialism, commercial agriculture and tourism, thousands of breadfruit trees dotted Lahaina; the fire charred all but two of the dozen or so that remained. By contrast, researchers believe breadfruit and kukui nut — now the state tree of Hawaii — were among the many edible plants Polynesian voyagers brought around 1,000 years ago. Efforts to revive the banyan and other important surviving trees have included trucking in water, applying compost extract and testing soil. But replanting breadfruit in urban areas comes with challenges, said Steve Nimz, an arborist on Oahu who has been helping restore Lahaina’s trees.

Chirag Bahri worked as an engineer on merchant vessels during a nearly decade-long career at sea. In 2010, his chemical tanker was held hostage by pirates for eight months. I had just joined the crew and I really needed to be on the ship to earn money. I was in the engine room when I got the call that pirates had boarded the ship. I still cherish the time I spent working onboard ships and I would encourage people to look at seafaring as a very positive, rewarding profession.

Much of Singapore's infrastructure is designed to utilize natural resources to reduce temperatures. Rooftop gardens, wind turbines, and water cooling work to reduce the impact of new buildings. Buildings are designed to curb wind, walkways are surrounded by trees to reduce heat absorption by asphalt, and windows in buildings are designed to funnel cool air in and push hot air out. Singapore is not the only country invested in making buildings that work with the environment instead of against it. Countries around the world are making eye-catching, energy-efficient buildings in an attempt to reduce emissions and increase sustainability.

CNN —Apple is working on a software fix following reports that some of its new iPhone 15 models are overheating. “We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected,” Apple told CNN in a statement. Leading up to launch day, analysts at firms such as Wedbush Securities reported iPhone 15 pre-orders tracking better than originally expected, with a heavy demand on its premium iPhone 15 Pro offerings, especially the Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $1,099, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199. Apple’s entry-level iPhones, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, cost $799 and $899, respectively.

Apple identifies issues causing overheating in the iPhone 15

[1/5] People look at the new iPhone 15 Pro as Apple's new iPhone 15 officially goes on sale across China at an Apple store in Shanghai, China September 22, 2023. The third-party apps causing the issue include game Asphalt 9; Meta's (META.O) Instagram; and Uber, according to the company. The upcoming iOS 17 bug fix will not reduce performance to address the iPhone's temperature. The Cupertino, California-headquartered company said that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max do not suffer from overheating due to the design, rather the new titanium shells result in improved heat dissipation compared to prior stainless steel models. Apple also said the issue is not a safety or injury risk, and will not impact the phone's long-term performance.

Apple is blaming a software bug and other issues tied to popular apps such as Instagram and Uber for causing its recently released iPhone 15 models to heat up and spark complaints about becoming too hot to handle. It didn't specify a timeline for when its own software fix would be issued but said no safety issues should prevent iPhone 15 owners from using their devices while awaiting the update. In its acknowledgement, Apple stressed that the trouble isn't related to the sleek titanium casing that houses the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max instead of the stainless steel used on older smartphones. The downturn has affected iPhone sales, which fell by a combined 4% in the nine months covered by Apple's past three fiscal quarters compared with a year earlier. Apple is trying to pump up its sales in part by raising the starting price for its top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max to $1,200, an increase of $100, or 9%, from last year's comparable model.

Singapore is trying to fight rising temperatures partly by making its buildings greener, literally. One central strategy is to literally make the city greener by covering rooftops and the facades of buildings with plants. Under its Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme, Singapore pays property owners up to 50% of the cost of installing green rooftops and facades. And the green buildings can attract tourists looking to patronize eco-friendly businesses. Toronto passed a law in 2009 requiring that buildings of a certain size have green roofs.
