Bottom line All in all, this was a good quarter from Amazon, with beats across business segments. If Amazon takes the hammer to its expenses like Meta Platforms did Wednesday , we think the stock could trade much higher. This was related to Amazon closing down some Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores, though we appreciate Amazon shutting down stores that offer lower growth potential. First quarter outlook Amazon is generally conservative when providing financial guidance, but the outlook Thursday left more to be desired. Federal safety inspectors on Wednesday issued citations against Amazon at three of its warehouses for putting workers at risk of serious injury, the second such penalty in a month. The move comes after OSHA last month cited Amazon for failing to keep workers safe at three other facilities. "Amazon's operating methods are creating hazardous work conditions and processes, leading to serious worker injuries," said Doug Parker, assistant secretary for Occupational Safety and Health, in a statement. Amazon also faces a separate investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office's civil division that centers around worker safety hazards at the e-retailer's facilities nationwide. As part of the probe, investigators are also looking into whether Amazon has accurately reported worker injuries and if it misrepresented those injuries to lenders to obtain credit.
The Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued citations against Amazon at three of its warehouses for exposing workers to safety hazards, the department announced Wednesday. Amazon also faces a separate investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office's civil division that centers around worker safety hazards at the e-retailer's facilities nationwide. Amazon warehouse workers have previously complained that the company's pace of work prevents them from taking adequate bathroom and rest breaks, and leads to unfair disciplinary actions. In April, workers at an Amazon warehouse on New York's Staten Island voted to form the company's first U.S. union. Workers at another Staten Island facility rejected a union, while a second election at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama is being contested.
For now, most Amazon drivers are still in about 110,000 gas-powered vans — primarily Ford Transits, Mercedes-Benz Sprinters and Ram ProMasters. Amazon wouldn't share how it determines which of its 3,500 third-party delivery firms, or delivery service partners (DSPs), are receiving Rivian vans first. Amazon vans have driver-facing cameras inside, which can catch unsafe driving practices as they happen. For example, an Amazon driver in Missouri was found dead in a front yard in October, allegedly after a dog attack.

CNBC talked to drivers about how the job has changed since 2021, when they told us about unrealistic workloads, peeing in bottles, dog bites and error-prone routing software. Amazon delivery packages from North America were found in illegal dump sites and mills in India. Plastic waste ends up in dump sites that emit vile odors and can pollute the air, Bloomberg reports. Amazon delivery packaging was also found mixed in with materials processed at sugar cane and paper mills in Muzaffarnagar, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg's findings come three years after the Indian government lifted its ban on importing plastic waste due to the country's waste shortage, the India Times reported. The spokesperson also referred Insider to Amazon Second Chance, a guide for customers to understand how to recycle their Amazon packaging.

I'm honestly ready for the holiday season to be overIt's more exhausting than I imagined. One of the biggest changes about working this job during the holiday season is the influx of packages. Plus, some customers are even more appreciative of us during the holiday season, and they'll leave snacks or drinks at the front door. At the end of a day, my body's a messWhen my work day ends, I'm ready for a nap. Once the holiday season ends, I'll continue working this job for at least another year, and perhaps even another holiday season.
Amazon said its plastic packaging footprint came to 97,222 metric tons in 2021. Oceana estimated that Amazon used nearly 322,000 metric tons of plastic in 2021, more than triple what the company calculated. By Oceana's count, Amazon used 52% more plastic last year compared with 2019, the first year the group conducted its analysis. In 2021, Target, Walmart, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo each used more plastic packaging than the previous year, contributing to an overall 4.3% increase across brands and retailers. California, the largest economy in the US, passed a law in June to cut plastic packaging in the state by 25% over a decade.
Amazon is adding a way for customers to show delivery drivers their appreciation during the busy holiday season. Beginning Dec. 7, customers who have a package delivered from Amazon can say "Alexa, thank my driver" to their Alexa-enabled device or Amazon app and the delivery driver will receive a note of gratitude. The first 1 million drivers to receive thank yous will also get a $5 tip at no cost to the customer, Amazon announced. The five drivers who receive the most thank yous will also receive a $10,000 bonus, plus $10,000 donated to the charity of their choice. The announcement comes just as news broke that Amazon is being sued by the District of Columbia for allegedly stealing driver tips.

The company said the holiday shopping weekend was its "biggest ever," with consumers snapping up hundreds of millions of products during the period. Independent businesses selling on Amazon surpassed $1 billion in sales during the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, the company said. Amazon didn't provide sales figures for the five-day shopping weekend, which tends to be some of its busiest days in the holiday period. The company's fourth-quarter results, typically released in late January or early February, will give Wall Street a more complete picture of the holiday shopping season. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File PhotoLONDON (Reuters) - Amazon UK said it would expand its electric-cargo bike fleet and make more deliveries on foot to accelerate the decarbonisation of the transportation network it uses to deliver packages across the country. Amazon is targeting net-zero carbon by 2040 and said that the extra e-cargo bikes, a four-wheeled vehicle with handlebars and a container on the back, and the walkers would carry 2 million deliveries a year. In 2021, Amazon delivered more than 45 million packages using its electric fleet. As well as the electric bikes, it already has 1,000 electric delivery vans and five fully electric heavy goods vehicles in its fleet.
Cyber Monday is the biggest holiday-shopping day of the year by sales, outpacing even Black Friday. But the shopping holiday wouldn't have been what it is today without retailers eager to make it a success. That year, shop.org, NRF's online arm, issued a press release in November declaring: "'Cyber Monday' Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year." "This year, online retailers will be capitalizing on the increased traffic by offering special promotions and discounts." In five years, it had gone from obscurity to the highest-grossing shopping day of the holiday season.
Ulises Perez, 22, has been an Amazon delivery driver in Salt Lake City since 2020. I'd always wanted to be an Amazon driver as soon as I knew of the job's existence. I began to bide my time until I turned 21 — which is the official age to start work as an Amazon driver — and I could join my dream profession. A while after leaving my previous job, I came across an opening for a driver on Indeed, which I applied for. (Editor's note: Perez, like many Amazon delivery drivers, was hired by a local delivery-service partner and is considered an independent subcontractor with Amazon.)
A delivery driver for Amazon was found dead after an apparent animal attack Monday in Missouri, and deputies shot and killed two aggressive dogs, the Ray County sheriff said. Deputies were called to a home in Excelsior Springs, a town of around 10,000, around 7 p.m. after neighbors reported that an Amazon van had been parked there for several hours, Sheriff Ray Childers said. A man's body was found in a yard, as were two highly aggressive dogs, he said. The owners of the residence were not home, and it appears they are out of town, Childers said. In Florida in August, a U.S. postal worker died after having been attacked by five dogs, officials there said.
An Amazon delivery driver found dead in a yard in Missouri is suspected to have been mauled by two dogs. Neighbors called the sheriff's office after they noticed an Amazon van sitting outside a home for hours. When deputies arrived at the home, they encountered two dogs that were then shot and killed by a deputy. When deputies and medical arrived at the house, they found the body of the Amazon delivery driver and two dogs that looked like they were going to attack, Childers said. New York CNN Business —Authorities in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, have launched an investigation into the death of an Amazon delivery driver after he was found dead with possible dog bite injuries. Officers were called to the scene at around 7 p.m. Monday after they were told an Amazon delivery truck had been parked in front of a residential house for several hours. Authorities discovered the driver’s remains, a German shepherd and a mastiff behind the gate of a fence located near the delivery truck. An autopsy and necropsy will be performed on the driver and the dogs within the next coming days, according to Childers. It’s not clear if the dogs caused the death of the unnamed driver, but Childers noted the driver’s remains had extensive injuries.

Insider spoke to an Amazon delivery driver who asked to remain anonymous to protect his job. I started working part time as a driver for Amazon in 2019 after seeing an online classified ad. Amazon preaches safety, safety, safety, and while that's a great narrative for the media, behind the scenes it's another story. I've never been in a wreck, but these types of instances can drag a driver's score down, and the bottom line is everything comes down to your score. Amazon prides itself on getting driver safety under control, but then puts demands in place that force us to circumvent the system.
On Tuesday, Vice reported that Amazon had been monitoring dozens of private and public social-media groups operated by Amazon Flex drivers across the US, the UK, and Spain. The tool monitors conversations taking place across various platforms, including in private Facebook groups, subreddits about driving for Amazon Flex, and tweets containing the keyword "Amazon Flex," Vice reported.
