Long before moving into the White House, President Biden compared the relationship between the United States and Israel to that of close friends. For months, Mr. Biden refused to invite Mr. Netanyahu to Washington, which prevented at least some meetings between lower-level officials. Despite recognizing Israel, Mr. Truman refused to sell the new state offensive arms, as did his two successors. Mr. Biden’s relationship with Mr. Netanyahu has been scratchy going back years. “I don’t think the Jewish American community needs to be overly involved in this,” she said.

How market expectations have changed this year

As the economy and market continue to hum along, some investors’ expectations for what’s to come are shifting. Before the Bell: What were your market expectations at the start of this year, and how have they changed? Lori Van Dusen: When you look at what’s happened in the market on the surface, I think everybody knows it’s been a really good market, especially in the US, but it’s also been a very concentrated market around these seven stocks. And I think that’s why the market is broadening, and generally market participants are more constructive and taking their wins in technology and rotating. I think they’re fundamentally great companies, but I don’t think that their leadership will continue.

They thought Trump was history. But a second term might be different. I’ll predict that anyone who thought the Trump presidency was disastrous — and polling shows that includes many Americans and most citizens of America’s allies — will find Trump 2.0 even more cataclysmic. Trump now has a strong operation in developing meticulous plans for a possible second term. Before the 2020 election, I wondered if Taiwan might survive a second Trump term.

Bull market or fool's market? Investors say the latter

Mega-cap tech stocks that were battered by rising interest rates in 2022 have also seen a huge boost this year. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday held interest rates steady but indicated that it could hike rates twice more this year. Tech stocks’ record runApple shares closed at a record high on Thursday, creeping closer to reaching a $3 trillion market capitalization. The rally’s next testDespite some bullish signs in the market, investors say the math isn’t adding up to a sustained rally — especially considering a possible recession looms on the horizon. The central bank last Wednesday paused interest rates and indicated that it could raise rates two more times this year.

Was this really a comedy, especially in this final season? I had a lot to say, which I never took for granted, because it’s rare. I find it interesting to play characters who are making bad decisions. Sally attracted a lot of online hate, which reminded me of the reactions to female characters on other series. I feel like there’s just this undercurrent of cultural misogyny — the sexism involved in how we view those characters is wild to me.
(“Primary Trust” doubles as the name of Kenneth’s new employer, and an abbreviated metaphor for what was lost when his mother died.) As in her superstore dark comedy “Paris,” presented by Atlantic Theater Company in 2020, Booth again probes the half-dread of working-class Black characters in a one-freeway-exit corner of the Northeast. And though Kenneth’s Blackness is an underlying aspect of his experience, it is not the acute source of his alienation. Booth’s one-man study is wonderfully vivid, but there’s only so much emotional engagement that the unburdening of feelings, rather than their enactment or discovery, can inspire. Her other characters are far more loosely sketched: Sanders and Matthis turn small roles, rich with concise, sideways detail, into four-course meals, paradoxically making them feel underused.
WACO, Texas (Reuters) -Die-hard fans of Donald Trump flocked to the ex-president’s election rally in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, brimming with defiance as their favored candidate faced overlapping threats of criminal indictment. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoSeveral thousand Trump supporters lined up outside the Waco Regional Airport waiting to go through security and enter the event, with the first speaker scheduled for 2 p.m. CDT (1900 GMT). Fifty-seven-year-old Laurie Hansen said Trump was “the best president ever.”“He’s the only one who can bring our country back,” she said. In an editorial, the Houston Chronicle said the decision to host the event in Waco during the anniversary of the Waco siege represented more than a dog-whistle message to far-right and conspiratorial Trump supporters.
WACO, Texas (Reuters) -Die-hard fans of Donald Trump flocked to the ex-president’s election rally in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, brimming with defiance as their favored candidate faces legal peril from prosecutors and mixed polling ahead of next year’s Republican primary elections. People cheer ahead of the first campaign rally for the re-election campaign of former U.S. President Donald Trump at Waco Regional Airport in Waco, Texas, U.S., March 25, 2023. “You have to understand: they are not just coming after President Trump, they are coming after you, and President Trump is just the only one standing in their way,” she said. The former president is seeking to turn the hush money case in New York to his advantage by raising money off it and using it to rally supporters. Schomburg said he thought Trump was trying to send a message by holding the rally in Waco.
Trump told supporters gathered at Waco’s airport on Saturday that the investigations swirling around him were “something straight out of the Stalinist Russia horror show.”“From the beginning it’s been one witch hunt and phony investigation after another,” he said. “I’m not a big fan,” Trump said of DeSantis, accusing of him of plotting to slash social security. Several times Trump repeated the false claim that his election loss in 2020 was due to a systemic fraud orchestrated by the Democrats. He described some American officials and senior U.S. politicians - including Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell - as a bigger threat to America than China or Russia. “Either the Deep State destroys America or we destroy the Deep State,” Trump said.
“The Biden regime’s weaponization of law enforcement against their political opponents is something straight out of the Stalinist Russia horror show,” Trump said. Trump depicted the United States as a failed state whose economy was in freefall - a description at odds with the country’s record-low unemployment rate. Several times Trump repeated the false claim that his election loss in 2020 was due to a systemic fraud orchestrated by the Democrats. “Either the Deep State destroys America or we destroy the Deep State,” Trump said. Speaking ahead of Trump’s speech, Matt Schomburg, 45, said he believed the rally was a way to energize his supporters for the 2024 race.
More stocks across different sectors are participating in the market’s 2023 rebound, often an encouraging sign of a rally’s durability. The S&P 500 has risen 7.1% in 2023, with last year’s worst performers bouncing back sharply to lead the way. Some of the bellwethers of the U.S. stock market, including Meta Platforms Inc., Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp., have broken through their long-term trend lines in recent sessions.
Chicago’s Big Pension Gamble

Chicago government-worker pensions are massively under-funded. So in typical Chicago-land fashion, the City Council is betting on casino revenue to plug the pension gap. Do taxpayers and workers feel lucky? City aldermen last month approved a $1.7 billion casino and entertainment complex by Bally’s Corp. that will supposedly generate $200 million annually in tax revenue for the city police and firefighter pension funds—assuming financial forecasts prove accurate. Remember, this is Chicago.
Now the main Russian Cossack organisations are loyal to Putin, and they are fighting alongside Russia’s forces in Ukraine. He is regularly pictured on his and other social media pages at Cossack gatherings, often wearing Cossack military uniform. Felk has worked as a security guard and has run a logistics firm, according to posts on Felk’s OK social media account. Photos shared by Kharkovsky on social media show him and other participants standing in front of a Great Don Army flag. Eremenko confirmed to Reuters that he worked for Russian military intelligence, the GRU.
Saudi leaders will infuse the trip with a dose of spectacle. The Saudi king – or his powerful Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman – may bestow the Chinese leader with some honors and medals. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman fist bumps US President Joe Biden upon his arrival at Al Salman Palace, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 15. Today, the US consumes only a fraction of that Saudi oil, and China is Saudi Arabia’s biggest client and trading partner. Over the last year, Gulf Arab countries appear to have ramped up their independent-minded policy.
Comedian Freddie Roman, the former dean of The Friars Club and a staple of the Catskills comedy scene, has died. Roman died Saturday afternoon at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida, his booking agent and friend Alison Chaplin said Sunday. His uncle and grandfather owned the Crystal Spring Hotel in the Catskills, where Roman started emceeing at age 15. In “Catskills on Broadway,” Roman commented about everything from his childhood in Queens to his “retirement life” in Florida. He was also made Dean of the New York City Friars Club, where he mentored many aspiring comedians and infused the private club with young talent.
The president of the lower house of the French Parliament, Yaël Braun-Pivet, subsequently suspended the legislative session. Charities helping the migrants have appealed to the French government to take them in or help find a solution. Party spokesman Victor Chabert said de Fournas was referring to migrants at sea in his Africa remark and not, as some in French media wondered, to his fellow lawmaker. Reacting to the event, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said that “racism has no place in our democracy.”She said the chamber “will have to take sanctions” over de Fournas’ remark without elaborating what those might be. National Rally’s leader, Marine Le Pen, lost her second bid for the French presidency to Macron in April.
Investors Are Wary of Steering Into Auto Loans

Losses on auto loans aren’t yet breaking speed limits, but they are accelerating. Investors don’t want to wait around for an accident. Ally Financial one of the largest auto lenders, reported a sharp jump in consumer auto loan loss rates from the second to the third quarter. Within retail auto lending, Ally’s annualized net charge-off rate hit 1.05% in the third quarter, up from 0.54% in the second quarter. Analysts were expecting it to be around 0.9%, according to estimates compiled by Visible Alpha.
When I read that New York restaurateur Keith McNally had banned “The Late Late Show” host James Corden from famed restaurant Balthazar for allegedly abusive behavior, I was shocked. Not at hearing accusations that a wealthy celebrity had been rude to people in the hospitality industry, but at something far less common: a restaurant owner’s criticizing and barring a client, in public no less. Unfortunately, online reservation systems have also magnified one of the reasons diners used to end up being shunned: the reservation no-show. Few would dare to speak to podiatrists or electricians that way, but most restaurant servers tolerate it because they depend on tips — which can be upward of 70% of their earnings. What doesn’t is a restaurant owner’s publicly standing up for employees by telling bad customers that they have been banned.
President Joe Biden even joined the criticism with a rare comment on an ally’s economic policies in which he called the tax cut plan a “mistake.”Truss admitted fault Monday night. “I do want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made,” she told BBC News. “Anyone could have seen that this wasn’t going to fly — how could they have not seen that coming?” Ford said. As critics had predicted, markets tanked and the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar in 30 years. “It wasn’t just a total disaster with the markets, it was a total disaster electorally,” Ford said of Truss’ economic plan.
NEW YORK — Jury selection is set to begin on Monday in the trial of Tom Barrack, the private equity executive and onetime fundraiser for former President Donald Trump, on charges he acted as a foreign agent without notifying the U.S. government. Barrack, who chaired Trump’s inauguration committee, has pleaded not guilty, as has his former assistant and co-defendant Matthew Grimes. They intend to argue that their interactions with UAE officials were part of their work for DigitalBridge, then known as Colony Capital. After hundreds of potential jurors filled out questionnaires, Cogan wrote on Sept. 2 that candidates who expressed “merely some dislike” of Trump could still serve. Barrack’s lawyers have said the U.S. State Department, and Trump himself, knew of his contacts with Middle East officials, showing that Barrack did not intend to be a foreign agent.
