Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was none too pleased with the Teamsters' non-endorsement and expressed her dissatisfaction with the leadership of Sean O'Brien, the union's president. Advertisement"When the Teamsters are in trouble, who do they call when we need to make sure that Teamsters pensions are bailed out? Ocasio-Cortez's remarks reveal just how much unions will matter in this election — especially with organizing and turnout efforts. Vice President Kamala Harris has rallied hard for union support since she launched her presidential campaign. AdvertisementThe tug of war for union support reflects the high stakes for both candidates, particularly in the Upper Midwest, where organized labor has long been a robust political force.

The HOMES Act would establish a new federal housing development authority charged with building and rehabilitating more than a million permanently affordable homes. This so-called "social housing" is notably different from traditional public housing, which is entirely reserved for the poorest households. Rent for all tenants in social housing would be capped at 25% of their income. "There is another way: social housing," Ocasio-Cortez and Smith said in their op-ed. And in California, lawmakers introduced a bill to construct mixed-income social housing on government-owned land.

CNN —Archaeologists have unearthed the ancient remains of an Egyptian army barracks and the artifacts left there, including a still-shiny bronze sword engraved with the name of King Ramses II in hieroglyphics. According to the ministry, Egypt was enjoying a time of economic prosperity and political stability known as the New Kingdom when the fort was in use. Archaeologists also uncovered necklaces made from carnelian and faience beads – types of semi-precious stones used by the ancient Egyptians – as well as half a bronze ring. Archaeologists uncovered several personal items belonging to the soldiers. Some of the rooms were used to store food, Ayman Ashmawy, head of the Egyptian antiquities sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said, with fragments of large pottery and animal bones still remaining.

The history of the US Secret Service

The agency was commissioned within the Treasury Department, and the Secret Service was entirely focused on counterfeit money, a major problem of the day. Threatening presidents was not made a crime until 1917, the same year Congress approved Secret Service protection for the immediate family of a president. The Secret Service remained a part of the Treasury Department until 2003, when a massive government reorganization after the 9/11 terror attacks moved the Secret Service to the Department of Homeland Security. But the Secret Service is still tasked with fighting financial crimes. The entire Secret Service employs nearly 8,000 people for its protective and investigative missions, and it secures thousands of events each year.

CNN —At least two people have been killed and 29 injured in a train collision in Egypt, the country’s health ministry said Saturday. Images from the scene showed crowds of people gathered around the twisted wreckage of the trains as the rescue operations took place. Egypt recorded 2,044 train accidents in 2018 and 1,793 the year before, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). In 2021, at least 32 people were killed and 165 injured when two trains collided. A collision between two trains in Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city, in August 2017 left more than 40 dead and many more injured.

Read previewIt was probably the most noteworthy thing to come out of Kamala Harris' much-anticipated CNN interview late last month: The Vice President, if elected, pledged to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet. "It may be difficult to find a rational, sane person who still identifies as a Republican" that would agree to serve in Harris' cabinet, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut quipped. "There are a lot of Republicans that I think are capable of assuming Cabinet positions," Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts said. "I'm not floating people's names for particular positions," Rep. Ro Khanna of California said, shortly after heaping praise on Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and former Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin. Though he said Harris' pledge was a "positive step," he made clear on Tuesday that he's not interested in serving in her administration.

The long-awaited Google-DOJ showdown focuses on the $31 billion portion of Google’s ad business that matches website publishers with advertisers. “One monopoly is bad enough, but a trifecta of monopolies is what we have here,” said Wood, the DOJ attorney, referring to Google’s publisher ad server business, its advertising exchange AdX, and its advertiser ad network. Authorities have called for that group of businesses within Google — which is distinct from Google’s search or search ads business — to be broken up. Factoring in those other sources of competition drops Google’s share of the ad exchange market from 34% to 17%, said Dunn, Google’s attorney. Still, a breakup of Google’s ad tech business could potentially trigger a shakeup of the digital advertising industry and Google’s role within it.

The DOJ accuses the tech giant of building an illegal monopoly of the digital-advertising market. In a blog post before the trial, Google said the DOJ's "narrow view" of the market wasn't realistic. For Google, the focus turns to its ad tools, which are part of the company’s $200 billion digital ad business. In the first antitrust case, the court found that Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act, which outlaws monopolies. The company’s M&A strategy “set the stage for Google’s later exclusionary conduct across the ad tech industry,” the Justice Department alleges. Google has long fought back against claims that it dominates online ads, pointing to the market share of competitors including Meta. It will argue that buyers and sellers have many options especially as the online ad market has evolved.

These real estate transactions are just one example of the vast gulf in wealth between the two vice-presidential candidates. On their tax return for 2023, the Walzes reported $299,000 in income, more than they had declared in years. Mr. Vance, a multimillionaire, had more than that in just his checking accounts the year before, according to his most recent financial disclosure form. Alma Powell, an advocate for children, literacy and military families who was the quiet force alongside her husband, Colin L. "By the way," Vice President Kamala Harris said at an Atlanta rally on Tuesday, "don't you find some of their stuff to just be plain weird?" With Democrats eagerly resurfacing the Ohio senator's years-old comments about "childless cat ladies," Republicans are suddenly on the defensive over their party's nominee for vice president. In an attempted counterpunch, Vance himself posted a video of Vice President Kamala Harris stating her pronouns during a CNN town hall in 2019. I wish her stepchildren and Kamala Harris and her whole family the very best. But what turns off Democrats — and plenty of Republicans — is that he isn't celebrating those who are able to have families.
