Skepticism over government responseOne New Jersey lawmaker is accusing federal officials of lying about the presence and purpose of the mysterious drones. Connecticut State Police announced Friday they have deployed a drone detection system to assist in investigative efforts into unauthorized drone sightings reported over Fairfield County. Josh Shapiro said his administration is “aware of” the reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. Residents in New York’s Rockland County reported drone sightings starting as early as November. A total of 791,597 drones are registered with the FAA, split almost evenly between commercial drones and recreational drones.

Rovaniemi, Finland AP —Shuffling across icy ground on a cold December afternoon, lots of tourist groups poured into Santa Claus Village, a winter-themed amusement park perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle. However, not everyone is happy about the onslaught of visitors, 10 times the town’s population, each year at Christmas time. Rovaniemi counted a record 1.2 million overnight visitors in 2023, almost 30% growth on 2022, after rebounding from pandemic travel disruptions. “People want to travel to cool countries to see the snow, to see the Northern Lights, and, of course, to see Santa Claus,” she added. Airport rides are among the most profitable trips for human drivers. If Waymo One's robotaxis continue expanding to airports, human ride-hailing drivers could see their incomes take a big hit. A South American tour group is turning Jonestown into a travel destination, over four decades after it was the scene of the most notorious mass suicide and murder in modern history. The first group of tourists is already scheduled to visit the site, located in the rural interior of Guyana, in January, according to the tour operator. For a price tag of $650, they'll have an overnight experience that is intended to provide a deeper understanding of the tragedy. It was the site of the 1978 Jonestown Massacre, in which more than 900 people, including hundreds of children, died after Jones ordered them to drink cyanide mixed with a fruit-flavored beverage. The U.S. government condemned the Taliban on Wednesday for reportedly ordering the suspension of medical education for women and girls in Afghanistan. In August, the Taliban published vice laws that ban women’s voices and bare faces in public in an effort to completely erase Afghan women and girls from public life. Medical education, including nursing and midwifery, was one of the only forms of education still available to women in the country. “These directives, now coupled with excluding women from obtaining a medical education, further jeopardize the health, well-being, safety and lives of not just Afghan women and girls, but all Afghans,” Blinken said. The group said the availability of health care was already affected by an insufficient number of female health care workers in the country, where hospital wards are segregated by gender.

My husband and I improved our 15-hour economy flight by buying an extra seat, a "bubble" seat. Booking an extra seat (which some call a "bubble" seat) was definitely the best thing we tried. Related storiesThe 'bubble' seat was the MVP of our tripThe best thing we did to improve our flying experience was getting a "bubble" seat. The main downside of getting a "bubble" seat is that we couldn't choose where we were seated. Still, although "bubble" seat prices vary, a few hundred bucks wasn't bad for an extra seat and extra space.

JetBlue Airways plans to add domestic first-class seats in 2026 on airplanes that don’t have its top-tier Mint class, the latest initiative to win over higher-paying customers and get back to profitability. All of JetBlue’s Airbus aircraft without Mint, the airline’s lie-flat seats, will have two or three rows of domestic first-class seats, Marty St. George, JetBlue’s president, said in a note to employees. “Since launching Mint over a decade ago, we’ve explored the idea of expanding a version of it across the fleet, often playfully calling it ‘mini-Mint’ or ‘junior Mint,’” St. George said.
