The Ukrainian pilots are expected to arrive at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona, by October. Ukraine’s leaders have asked for fighter jets from the West since the earliest days of the war. Loh said the Air National Guard assessed the three-month timeline based on training Ukrainian pilots received on Fresno, California-based F-15Cs, another advanced Air National Guard fighter jet. That exposure allowed the Air National Guard to assess that Ukraine’s aviators were already using more Western tactics in flying and that it would not take long to bring them up to speed, Loh said. The nine-month timeframe is the estimate to get pilots with no previous fighter jet experience flying the F-16s, Loh said.

"Everybody hates multi-factor authentication," cybersecurity expert and former government hacker Kyle Hanslovan tells CNBC Make It. Microsoft has claimed that multi-factor authentication can prevent 99.9% of cyberattacks on personal accounts. Fewer than half of U.S. small business-owners require employees and customers to use multi-factor authentication, according to the Cyber Readiness Institute. They're more likely to choose the path of least resistance whenever they come across an obstacle, like an extra step for authentication, Hanslovan says. "If you [use multi-factor authentication] and choose that app, you're almost ahead of most of the pack and attackers will move to somebody who's the slowest one."

The US officially announced Wednesday it will send Ukraine depleted-uranium tank ammunition. This powerful ammunition gives Kyiv the capability to not only punch holes in Russian armor, but also do additional damage inside enemy vehicles as the fragments potentially ignite. The Pentagon listed the 120 mm depleted-uranium tank ammunition as part of a $175 security assistance package that was officially revealed on Wednesday. The US is not the first NATO member to send Ukraine depleted-uranium ammunition. The latest US security assistance announcement, which includes the depleted-uranium tank rounds, comes ahead of what is expected to be an imminent delivery of 31 Abrams tanks.

The young Ukrainian pilot known by the call sign "Juice" campaigned for F-16 fighter jets for his country in its battle against Russia. The joking, the nonchalance, the sterile vocabulary — it’s all part of a well-honed fighter pilot culture, which ingrains the mental resilience needed to survive. “Even with our losses, we are still doing our job in this real combat mood, real fighter pilot mood, with crazy jokes. Beyond their fears and sorrows, there is another emotion, unique to war, which Ukrainian fighter pilots must now also control each time they fly. For its part, the US military plans to start training Ukrainian pilots to fly the supersonic fighters this October.

In January 2020, Iran fired nearly a dozen ballistic missiles at an Iraqi base housing US troops. The hundreds of US troops at the base experienced what has been described as "the largest ballistic attack against Americans in history." The troops only received a few hours of warning, and the base had no air defenses capable of intercepting the missiles. Three Ukrainian pilots were killed Friday after a midair collision during a training flight. The catastrophe comes as Western allies have begun offering pilot training to Ukraine's troops. "Yesterday, a disaster occurred in the sky over Zhytomyr region," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement released Saturday, confirming the pilots' deaths. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe catastrophe comes just days after the US announced plans to provide jet pilot training for Ukrainians flying F-16s that Denmark and the Netherlands have supplied from their fleets. The training, which will be conducted at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona, will begin in October.

The Biden administration on Thursday announced plans to begin F-16 pilot training for Ukrainian troops. The offering is a marked shift from Biden's original position of not providing F-16s or training. In February, he ruled out providing F-16s; by May, he supported allies supplying jets. Russia's superior air power has been challenging for Ukrainian troops to overcome. Representatives for the White House and Ukraine Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

The legal fight over reparations for the 1921 massacre of Black residents in Tulsa, Okla., will continue, after the Oklahoma Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal of a lower court’s dismissal of a lawsuit filed by the attack’s last three living survivors. The lawsuit, filed in 2020, includes the city, the Tulsa County sheriff, county commissioners and the Oklahoma Military Department, which administers the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard, as defendants. A Tulsa County district judge dismissed it in July, and the state’s high court agreed last week to hear an appeal. “It is a huge victory for us,” Damario Solomon-Simmons, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in an interview on Tuesday. Ms. Benningfield Randle said she still has flashbacks of corpses being stacked on the street as her neighborhood burned, according to the lawsuit.

In the CNN poll published Friday, 55% of all respondents said that Congress should stop authorizing new military aid for Kyiv. Worse, from my perspective, is the shameful fact that Republicans are far more likely to favor an end to aid than Democrats. He also has said the US should prioritize school safety over Ukraine aid. Certainly, the CNN poll suggests a measurable level of Democratic support for military solutions to geopolitical crises. Official opposition to Ukraine aid is most significant in Congress, which does play a role in what happens to the flow of assistance.

US President Joe Biden waves as he departs from Delaware Air National Guard Base in New Castle, Delaware, on August 7, 2023, enroute to Joint Base Andrews. WASHINGTON — Buoyed by an economy that is doing far better than the White House expected and a political opponent mired in dozens of indictments, President Joe Biden will hit the road Monday for a rare trip to a state that played a critical role in the 2020 election. "What I'm most excited about is people are starting to feel a sense of optimism as they see the impact of the achievements in their own lives," Biden said when he last visited Arizona in December. "It's going to accelerate in the months ahead and it's part of a broad story about the economy we're building that works for everyone." But two months after President Joe Biden announced US support for training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s, there remain a number of critical details to work out. It is also still unclear which countries will commit F-16s to the training program – and to Ukraine itself once the program is finished. The training program will be for Ukraine and “also for other countries who are transitioning to the fourth generation fighter jets,” she said. The number of Ukrainian pilots set to be trained is also still being determined, but the Air Force memo recommended a pool of 10-12 participants. “The United States will not be the holdup in ensuring that this F-16 training can get under way.”

A news segment demonstrating the procedures in place to protect U.S. presidential air space is circulating with the false claim that it shows military protection against those who try to fly over Antarctica. On social media, conspiracy theories that the U.S. or other governments are hiding secrets in Antarctica have persisted. Reuters traced the video to an NBC News Today Show segment uploaded to YouTube in July 2017 on how the Air National Guard protects presidential airspace (bit.ly/3DCBTRr). The report demonstrated the procedures in place for when an unidentified aircraft enters temporarily restricted airspace during a presidential event or visit. The video shows a segment aired by NBC’s Today Show in 2017 and was filmed in New Jersey, not Antarctica.

CNN —Traditionally committed to national security, global stability and law and order, my Republican Party — yes, I am still a Republican — is now weakening on all three fronts. And House members who cling to his message in an effort to win primary voters may very well suffer defeat in a general election. And then there’s the hostility these GOP extremists are directing at law enforcement, traditionally a wellspring of Republican support. Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio and several equally exercised Republicans members attacked a “weaponized” bureau for serving as an anti-conservative attack dog. On this evidence, I’d say that the extremists are hurting, not helping, the national Republican Party.

It is meant to be a test of the British air force's ability to operate away from its main bases. Some air forces moved away from that capability after the Cold War and now have to train for it again. US Air Force/Senior Airman Jonathan Valdes MontijoThe US military has also been planning distributed air operations from unconventional airfields and runways. Cluster munitions scatter “bomblets” across large areas, which can endanger noncombatants, and these unexploded bombs, called duds, can pose a risk to civilians for decades. Gen. Patrick Ryder said the Russians have been using cluster munitions with a dud rate as high as 40%. But one nation, and one nation only, gets to determine whether to use cluster munitions on its land — Ukraine. Ukrainians deserve everything we can give them — yes, especially cluster munitions — to save their families.
