A video appears to show a Russian Lancet drone striking a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter at an air base. It was launched from around 50 miles away, but Lancet drones previously only reached up to 25 miles. The development poses a new challenge for the Ukrainian air force, whose main air bases were previously out of reach for Russia's small attack drones. REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Sept 13 (Reuters) - MTU Aero Engines (MTXGn.DE) will talk to U.S. partner Pratt & Whitney about compensation for an estimated 700 million euro hit to its cash flow caused by problems with its partner's geared turbofan engines, the German aircraft engine maker's chief financial officer said on Wednesday. The problems would not markedly affect the current year but will result in a hit to cash flow of about 700 million euros ($751.45 million), which will be felt mainly in 2024 and 2025, with some spillover in 2026, according to CFO Peter Kameritsch. MTU said in a statement earlier on Wednesday that it is considering leaving the "significant resulting charges" on reported revenue and earnings figures for 2023 out of its current year guidance. BENGALURU, Sept 13 (Reuters) - India's Aeroflex Industries (AERO.NS), whose metal hoses are used in utilities, refineries and fire fighting equipment, is in talks to enter the aerospace sector, a top company executive said, aiming to capitalise on the country's burgeoning space program. "It is our aim that our products be a part of India's next space mission," Aeroflex Managing Director Asad Daud told Reuters in an interview last week. While HAL and BHEL are existing clients, the ongoing talks are a first for specific space-related projects, he said. Aeroflex expects its total revenue to increase by 35% in the next three to four years, with at least 5% coming from aerospace, Daud said. Aeroflex has three Chinese suppliers that, currently, meet 70%-75% of its needs for their coils.

RTX said on Monday it would have to pull 600 to 700 of its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines from Airbus A320neo jets for quality inspections over the next three years. The engine issue was first disclosed in July, but RTX made the extent of the problem clearer on Monday. The announcement caused waves up and down the industry, from component manufacturers like Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries to airline carriers like Germany's Lufthansa that rely on the popular Airbus jets. In July, RTX said microscopic contaminants were found in a powdered metal used in high-pressure turbine discs that are part of the GTF engine's core. RTX is one of two manufacturers of engines for the popular narrowbody Airbus A320neo, the other being CFM International, a joint venture between GE (GE.N) and Safran (SAF.PA).

Visitor passes the Raytheon Technologies Corporation (RTX) logo at the 54th International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport near Paris, France, June 22, 2023. In July, RTX said a rare powder metal defect could lead to the cracking of some engine components and called for accelerated inspections affecting 200 engines by mid-September. Repair work that CEO Greg Hayes had initially expected would take 60 days is now projected to last up to 300 days per engine. An average of 350 jets could be grounded per year through 2026, with as many as 650 jets sitting idle in the first half of 2024. Disclosing higher-than-expected gross costs of $6-7 billion for dealing with the problem, RTX said it expected an up to $3.5 billion pre-tax hit to profits over the next several years.

MTU said an expanded inspection of the geared turbofan engines at Pratt & Whitney could result in a hit to revenue and reported EBIT of around 1 billion euros ($1.07 billion) in the current financial year. MTU has an 18% share in the geared turbofan engines, which power Airbus' (AIR.PA) A320neo family of aircraft. Earlier Monday, the U.S. company said it expected a financial burden of $3-3.5 billion as a result of the problems.

Two rivals in the race to mass-produce an all-electric aircraft said on Thursday that they had agreed to collaborate and settled a trade-secrets lawsuit that one rival, Wisk Aero, had filed against the other, Archer Aviation. Archer said it, in turn, would exclusively use Wisk’s self-flying technology in future aircraft. Both Wisk and Archer are developing small electric aircraft that can take off vertically, like helicopters, but fly like airplanes. Each is being designed to carry four passengers short distances, but Archer’s will initially have a pilot while Wisk is working toward autonomous flight. Boeing said in a statement that its investment in Archer would “support the potential integration of Wisk’s autonomous technology in future variants of Archer’s aircraft, pursuant to Wisk’s exclusive right to be their autonomy provider.”

Rolls-Royce's turnaround delivers fivefold increase in profit
  + stars: | 2023-08-03 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Aero-engineer Rolls-Royce on Thursday reported a strong recovery in profit as its new CEO's turnaround plan gathers pace, helped by better pricing for maintaining the engines that power long-haulaircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. The British company reported first-half underlying operating profit of 673 million pounds ($854 million), more than five times the level of a year ago. Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic, who joined the company in January, said the jump in profit and cash generation reflected "greater productivity, efficiency, and improved commercial outcomes. Operating profit in its defence unit, which provides the engines that power Britain's nuclear submarines, grew by a third, driven by strong revenue growth and higher margin. Power systems - its third major business unit - reported broadly flat profit at a lower margin.

An Asiana Airlines passenger made headlines in May as he opened an emergency exit in mid-air. Now, four South Korean airlines are trying to prevent this happening again, per The Korean Times. In May, an Asiana Airlines flight was coming in to land when a passenger opened the emergency exit door at an altitude of 700 feet, minutes before landing. The newspaper reports that uniformed personnel including police officers, soldiers, firefighters, and airline employees, will have priority for seats in the emergency exit row. Analysts point to receding recession concerns and the prospect of a less aggressive policy stance from the U.S. Federal Reserve as factors fuelling hopes for a broader market rally. The second quarter earnings season has started positively for cyclical sectors, with over a quarter of the global companies announcing their results so far, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. "The upcoming earnings season has the potential to broaden the rally for sure. However, there are plenty of laggards especially in cyclical sectors such as financials and consumer discretionary, which are available at attractive valuations, analysts say. Over the past month, the communication services, mining and financial sectors have all posted about 5% gains, outpacing the tech sector's modest 2% rise.

Rolls-Royce boss reaps benefits of setting bar low
  + stars: | 2023-07-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Six months after calling Rolls-Royce (RR.L) a “burning platform”, Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic is giving Britain’s flagship engineering group a high five. Shares spiked 20% as investors celebrated the possibility of free cash flow hitting 1 billion pounds in 2023, 37% above consensus. The company had nearly 3.3 billion pounds of net debt last year, and Barclays analysts are pencilling in an increase this year. Erginbilgic can safely argue that Rolls-Royce is no longer a burning platform, but until he closes that gap he can expect heat from investors. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
