But opponents ignore both the history of so-called meritocracy, and the fact that DEI programs benefit business, Frazier and Chenault argue. But they said opponents have weaponized select examples of diversity programs that are not practiced widely to oppose DEI entirely. Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesMeanwhile, conservative legal groups are now filing lawsuits targeting companies’ diversity initiatives, and Republican leaders like Florida Gov. Frazier and Chenault said there was a split between companies that rushed to create diversity programs in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and companies that have embedded these programs into their business. “For those companies that had integrated DEI into the way they do business, fundamentally, it’s marbled into the meat, so to speak.

There's good reason to adopt a skills-first strategy: Hiring managers who practice skills-first hiring find it twice as easy to find qualified candidates than hiring managers who do not. But the advancement of generative AI has the potential to change that. To use AI effectively for skills-first hiring, talent professionals must understand how models have been developed and trained and audit and monitor those models for bias. Indeed's Smart Sourcing generative AI provides an explanation of the candidate's potential overlapping qualifications with the employer's job description. As crucial as AI will be to skills-first hiring, talent acquisition, and management always starts and end with humans.

A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

Their employment rate is also slightly lower than women in their early 20s. "This smaller share reflects the fact that, within marriages, mothers are still more likely than fathers to specialize in child care," the Fed noted. Today, 26% of mothers are stay-at-home parents, compared with just 7% of fathers, according to a separate Pew study from August. Mothers working full time and year-round outside the home rarely recoup the lost wages, which add up to $20,000 a year, on average. Working moms are making just 71 cents for every dollar paid to fathers, according to an analysis of Census data by the National Women's Law Center.

One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

Older donors give from of a sense of responsibility. Those over the age of 44 were more than twice as likely to give due to "obligation" than younger donors. Those under 43 were more likely to cite self-education and the influence of their social circle as drivers of their philanthropy. With AI reshaping daily operations of a real estate agent's business by automating tasks — from generating property listings to conducting neighborhood analyses — the agent's focus in day-to-day activities will shift. Serhant says AI won't virtualize relationships, but for the real estate agents who embrace the AI revolution — which he says is a necessary move to make — it will strengthen their relationships. The real estate industry is still in the initial stages of adopting AI and understanding remains low among real estate professionals, but the interest is there. But the survey also finds that real estate professionals have very low understanding of AI compared to other technologies. The FBI reported a big year-over-year increase in wire fraud cybercrime losses in 2023, driven significantly by real estate transactions.

One option would be to take out Iran's nuclear sites — something Biden opposes. A hit on Iran's nuclear facilities could, however, create far graver consequences, potentially including a race by Iran to build a nuclear weapon. AdvertisementUS President Joe Biden would not support Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in targeting nuclear sites. As The Financial Times noted, there are more than a thousand miles between Israel and Iran's main nuclear bases. And Iran's nuclear sites present a formidable target, sprawling across various sites, with several of the most sensitive located in heavily fortified underground bunkers.

A Pennsylvania middle school installed a window in its gender-inclusive restroom, making its interior visible from the school hallway. The window was constructed at Emory H. Markle Middle School in Hanover, Pennsylvania, which is roughly 5 miles north of the Maryland border. Gender-inclusive bathrooms are commonly used by transgender and nonbinary people for privacy and safety reasons. The window installation raised concerns among some of the students’ parents, who said windows were not added to the school’s single-sex multiuser restrooms. “I can understand needing to have supervision over middle and high school students, especially in the bathrooms.

“It’ll take him months on end to train for the job,” said Gadi Eisenkot, a highly respected former Israeli military chief and member of the opposition. Policy and domestic politics are impossible to separate in any democracy, but especially in Netanyahu’s Israel – and especially now. Remarkably, Netanyahu held a security consultation on Wednesday but did not invite his defense minister, an Israeli official told CNN. Hezbollah says that it’s attacking Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza; Israel wants to get Hezbollah to stop firing even without a Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal. With both the Philadelphi Corridor and Hezbollah, Netanyahu’s critics have questioned why, if they were so critical, he waited months to raise the stakes over those issues.

Andy Beshear signed an executive order Wednesday banning the scientifically discredited practice of so-called conversion therapy on minors in the state. “Conversion therapy has no basis in medicine or science, and it can cause significant long-term harm to our kids, including increased rates of suicide and depression. The same survey — which the governor's office cited in its statement — found that 54% of the LGBTQ youths who attempted suicide in the year prior were threatened with or subjected to conversion therapy. Advocates from The Trevor Project praised the governor's signing of the measure. Beshear's executive order comes amid the introduction of a historic number of anti-LGBTQ bills in state legislatures across the country this year.

LeanIn and McKinsey have released their annual Women in the Workplace Report, and while there are clear signs of progress, women also face major headwinds. Companies now offer significantly more work-life benefits than they did even five years ago: In 2024, 92% of companies offered paid maternity leave and 86% offered paid paternity leave, up from 2018, when 78% of companies offered paid maternity leave and 70% offered paid paternity leave. "We're seeing some progress, but it's pretty fragile," says Sheryl Sandberg, the founder and board chair of LeanIn. "People have added women to senior leadership in staff roles, but if you're looking for, 'Where's the CEO pipeline?' While women have reached the C-suite, they disproportionately oversee staff functions, she points out, like legal and HR.

Women also made gains since 2018 in becoming vice president and senior vice president, but again in staff roles. Half of companies also offer support for those employees caring for sick family members or elderly parents, the study found. The report found that for every 100 men who received their first opportunity to be a manager, only 81 women got the same offer. “Given that employees with consistent manager support are more likely to be promoted, it very likely disadvantages them,” the analysis said. “Research shows that companies with more women in leadership benefit from greater innovation, healthier cultures, and stronger performance.
