The effect of pay transparency laws on states
  + stars: | 2024-11-13 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The net effect for employers and employeesWhile only a minority of states require employers to provide pay transparency, their laws are having a domino effect on employers across the United States. “The majority of top-performing organizations (57%) embrace pay transparency and share pay ranges even when not required by law,” Payscale’s report noted. How pay transparency is helping individualsWhile there are federal laws prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender and other protected classifications, most states also have their own pay equity laws on the books. Wieselthier considers pay transparency laws a subset of pay equity because they provide a tool people can use to ensure they’re being paid fairly. “The whole purpose of pay transparency laws is to empower the candidates to negotiate,” Seikaly said.

AdvertisementSpotify is going after YouTube's video podcast dominance with a new revenue program for creators. The company will also no longer insert ads into video podcasts shown to paid subscribers. Spotify seems to be tired of playing second fiddle to YouTube when it comes to video podcasting. Spotify said payments for non-ad-supported video podcasts would be calculated based on how much a creator's content is viewed. Outside its creator monetization program, Spotify also announced on Wednesday that it rebranded its "Spotify for podcasters" program to "Spotify for creators," signaling a desire to draw in a wider set of video and audio talent to its platform.

Amazon is phasing out its free-to-watch streaming service Freevee as insiders speculate about potential layoffs in the tech giant's entertainment arm. The phaseout comes as three Amazon insiders told BI they believe MGM Studios could soon be hit by layoffs as the company looks to cut costs. Amazon already cut hundreds of jobs across Prime Video and MGM Studios teams earlier this year. It stopped greenlighting new Freevee originals and had been moving some Freevee employees to other parts of MGM Studios. It also competed for resources with Prime Video and created brand confusion with some viewers.

KFC sues Church’s over ‘Original Recipe’
  + stars: | 2024-11-12 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Last week, KFC accused Church’s Texas Chicken of violating its trademark rights when its fried chicken competitor began using the words “Original Recipe” in its advertising and promotions. KFC claimed in a lawsuit that beginning September 30, it noticed Church’s “abruptly” began using the phrase and ignored KFC’s October 24 letter objecting to the ads. In the disputed promotions, Church’s posted photos of its fried chicken deals with text above reading: “our original recipe is back.”The phrase, which KFC has been using for over half a century, “is likely to create confusion in the marketplace and dilute the ORIGINAL RECIPE® Mark,” the lawsuit, which was filed in US District Court in Texas, said. But when it comes to fried chicken, KFC also has to compete with Church’s Texas Chicken, Popeyes, Raising Cane’s, Zaxby’s and more. KFC’s “Original Recipe” trademark, which it says is a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, has long been part of the company’s branding.

Meta cut the price of its ad-free subscription versions of Facebook and Instagram by 40% for European Union users to comply with regulatory demands in the region. Meta originally debuted an ad-free subscription service for the EU in October 2023 due to an EU regulation intended to clamp down on anti-competitive practices by tech companies. The subscription service also came into effect after regional regulators fined the company over $400 million for violating EU data privacy laws. "The changes we're announcing today meet EU regulator demands and go beyond what's required by EU law," Meta President Nick Clegg said Tuesday on Threads. Let's call it the YouTube election

And I'm very confident — based on my non-scientific poll of my teenage sons, who inhale YouTube — that those numbers are way, way bigger for young people. But what was most interesting about the election was the way the Trump campaign spent the summer embracing YouTube personalities. Edison Research says YouTube — including both regular, free YouTube and YouTube's paid YouTube Music service — is the most popular way for people to listen to (or watch) podcasts. And, unlike platforms like Instagram and TikTok — podcasters can get a meaningful share of the advertising revenue generated by their YouTube audiences. We should think about it as a podcast plus a YouTube election," he says.

But some are pointing to an issue with far less power in American politics: transgender rights. Between the 2020 and 2024 elections, transgender rights have become a political flashpoint in the nation’s culture wars. And perhaps nothing stoked more conversation than the issue of transgender girls and women competing in girls and women’s sports. “Please do not blame trans issues or trans people for why we lost,” he wrote on X on Thursday. The total bill for ad spending in the 2024 election hit almost $11 billion, a new record and a substantial increase from the $9 billion spent in 2020. That's according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political ad spending. The total is in line with the firm's 2023 projection that 2024 would see more ad spending than ever before. Overall, the Democratic campaign and pro-Democratic outside groups spent almost $1.8 billion, while the Trump campaign and pro-Republican outside groups spent $1.4 billion.
