Sovereign wealth funds out of the Middle East are emerging as key backers of Silicon Valley's artificial intelligence darlings. In the past year, funding for AI companies by Middle-Eastern sovereigns has increased fivefold, according to data from Pitchbook. Few venture funds have deep enough pockets to compete with the multibillion-dollar checks coming from the likes of Microsoft and Amazon . MGX was launched as a dedicated AI fund in March, with Abu Dhabi's Mubadala and AI firm G42 as founding partners. For the U.S., having sovereign wealth funds invest in American companies, and not in global adversaries like China, has been a geopolitical priority.

AdvertisementDavis shared how he's grown his net worth — and why he thinks finding one's dream work can help them live their ideal life. For example, if a person retires at age 60 — rather than age 50 — then it would be much easier for them to hit their retirement savings goal. That's why Davis thinks the key is finding one's dream work. "You just need enough money to cover any shortfall between what you want to spend and what your dream work pays," he said. To be sure, finding a job — forget about one's dream job — is easier said than done in today's economy.

That was back in August 2023, just one year on from her mounting a camel for the first time. “It really starts with an awareness of animals and awareness of your own body,” she told CNN. The racing of dromedaries, a single-humped species also known as the Arabian camel, is a centuries-old passion in the region and endures in both popularity and lucrativeness, with prize money reaching multi-million-dollar figures. The hearing which will decide whether Manchester City broke 115* of the Premier League’s financial rules begins today (Monday) in London. It has been a long time coming — over 18 months since the Premier League announced its investigation had escalated into charges in February 2023. This is The Athletic’s guide to the 115* alleged charges (yes, we will explain the asterisk). AdvertisementIf the commission finds on “the balance of probabilities” that this was not the case, City will be found guilty. Should the Premier League rules be shown to be unlawful, their argument that City have broken those rules is significantly weakened.

CNN —Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is “happy” that a hearing into the club’s more than 100 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules will begin soon. In May 2023, Guardiola said: “What I would like is that the Premier League or the judges could make [a decision] as soon as possible. City has won the Premier League eight times and the Champions League once since it was acquired by The Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. As end-of-summer travel lines back up at TSA airport checkpoints in the U.S., one overseas airport is going all-in on a biometric passenger experience. The Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi will involve biometric sensors at every airport identification checkpoint by 2025. Airport security and travel experts have generally cheered the move. "Facial recognition is the future, and we will start to get intelligent with airport security and focus on the traveler rather than the items they bring. Among the concerns expressed are what type of data someone would need to give during the biometric enrollment process, and whether biometric security processes will be used to track movements throughout the airport, or if biometric data will be used outside the airport.

India's Bharti to buy Drahi's stake in BT, worth $4 billion
  + stars: | 2024-08-12 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
India's Bharti Enterprises said it would acquire a 24.5% stake in BT , worth about 3.2 billion pounds ($4 billion), buying out the British company's top investor, telecoms tycoon Patrick Drahi, as his Altice group struggles with high debts. The Indian company said it would buy an initial 9.99% stake before seeking to add the remaining 14.51% following regulatory approvals. Bharti said it supported BT's executive team and strategy as the group pushed forward with an "ambitious" transformation programme to deliver long-term sustainable growth. BT's shares have risen by 24% in the last six months as the fruits of its long-term investment plan to build the country's fibre network start to materialise. "This scale of investment from Bharti Global is a great vote of confidence in the future of BT Group and our strategy," Kirkby said in a statement following the investment.

LONDON — British investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown said on Friday it had agreed to a takeover offer equivalent to £5.4 billion ($6.9 billion) by a group of investors including CVC Group. Shareholders in Hargreaves Lansdown — the U.K.'s biggest stockbroker — will get 1,110 British pence per share and a dividend of 30 pence per share under the deal, the company said. The news comes after the company in May rejected an offer from the consortium of £4.7 billion, or 985 pence per share. At the time, Hargreaves Lansdown said the bid "substantially" undervalued the company and its prospects.

But US consumers aren’t only taking a financial hit from this summer’s extreme heat by way of their electricity bills. Shoppers could soon have to pay much higher prices for fruit and vegetables as farmers shoulder higher growing costs from the heat, a reversal of a trend seen over the past year with the cost of fruits and vegetables dropping by 1%, according to June Consumer Price Index data. For the rest of this summer, consumers aren’t likely to see markedly higher prices for seasonal fruits like blueberries because contracts with distributors and retailers tend to be worked out in advance, he said. Climate change, he said, is causing his business to suffer financially with reduced crop yields. However, the steep costs to make that switch could also contribute to higher prices consumers pay for produce.
