The environmental activists who delayed the U.S. Open semifinal Thursday night by staging protests in Arthur Ashe Stadium join a long line of high-profile public disruptions aimed at drawing attention to the existential threat posed by climate change. Activists have staged what many call “guerrilla protests” across the United States and Europe. The provocative actions have included throwing mashed potatoes at a glass-protected Monet painting in Germany and tossing liquids or gluing themselves to the glass or frames enclosing other iconic works like Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring” and Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.”While priceless art work has been a particularly attractive target, climate activists have also disrupted traffic in London and New York, blocked the entrance to this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, interrupted supplies at oil facilities in Germany and clashed with police in France. And they upended a prior tennis match, on July 5, at Wimbledon. In that protest, three people stormed a court and scattered orange confetti on the famous grass before they were arrested.

"I remember the last time I played him in Madrid," Alcaraz said of the clash in May when Zverev lost tamely. "He was struggling a lot, working really hard to come back at his best and finally we all see him showing his best tennis." Zverev, with his booming serve finding the mark, was able to keep pace with Alcaraz through the early part of the first set. But I try to make the people enjoy watching tennis," Alcaraz said. Another break to get in front 5-2 and a hold left Alcaraz with a big smile and Zverev calling for a medical time out.

For Rublev it was a familiar end to a Grand Slam, made all the more painful coming at the hands of his good friend Medvedev for the third time and second at the U.S. Open. Nine times Rublev has contested a Grand Slam quarter-final, losing each one with Medvedev also knocking him out at the same stage of the 2020 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open. "Just tried to go for it, tried to run, tried to catch the balls and he did the same." It was an ominous start to the match for Rublev with Medvedev 25-0 at Flushing Meadows after winning the first set. With the brutal conditions preventing both players from finding any rhythm, the breaks came fast and furious the next two sets.

I thought I had seen it all on a tennis court until I watched Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open on Monday. No, I’m not talking about the speed and punch of his forehand. I’m talking about his audacious creativity: As Alcaraz worked his way into the net early in the match, Matteo Arnaldi lifted a lob over the Spaniard’s head. Alcaraz is not most pros. A backhand, overhead drop shot winner in front of a packed house at Arthur Ashe Stadium?

NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev felt he had to react when he heard a fan use language from Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime during his U.S. Open match. That made the ejection of the Zverev fan — who was not arrested — an easy decision. Less clear is a situation like the Djokovic fan, whose behavior is normal at a basketball or football game, where spectators don't hold their applause until play has stopped. “Again, if the rule one day is going to change, I’m not going to argue against this anymore, because that’s the rule,” Medvedev said. It’s the rule.”Tiafoe advocates tennis encouraging fans to cheer and move around freely, like team sports.

"Feeling like I left it all out here tonight," said the 47th ranked Shelton, who is still searching for his first ATP Tour win. "He (Djokovic) has won 23 of these (Grand Slams), it doesn't get much better than that," said Shelton. Shelton came out guns blazing, with his groundstrokes struck with such venom they drew gasps from the capacity crowd. After holding his first two serves Tiafoe had no answers for his opponent's explosive forehand as Shelton claimed five straight games to snatch opening set. Another break at 5-2 and Tiafoe's fate was sealed with Shelton holding serve for the win.

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a hint of a predicament 35 minutes into his U.S. Open quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday night. At 3-all in the first set under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Zverev earned the first break points of the match. One more service hold arrived and, just like that, the set belonged to Alcaraz, as did, eventually, a spot in the semifinals. On Wednesday, he saved all five break points he faced and converted each of the four he earned in Zverev's service games. With Alcaraz serving at 3-3 in the early going, it was Zverev who buckled, missing a backhand on each of his break points.

CNN —Daniil Medvedev beat compatriot Andrey Rublev to reach the US Open semifinals on Wednesday, but warned that a player might “die” in what he called “brutal” conditions at the tournament. Medvedev triumphed over Rublev in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-4, but both players could be seen struggling with the heat inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Al Bello/Getty ImagesAfter the victory, Medvedev called the conditions “brutal” and explained that he couldn’t see the ball by the end of the first set. “The only good thing I see in these conditions is that both suffer,” Medvedev said during his on-court interview. I played with sensations.”“I tried to go for it, tried to run and he did the same.

"I felt very good actually from the start till the end," Muchova told reporters. "I had a good feeling with the ball from the baseline, I felt good on the net, slicing, and with my whole game. French Open finalist Muchova got off to a quick start and raced out to a 3-0 lead before fending off nine break points to win a marathon game and extend to 4-0. A flustered Cirstea's backhand then landed wide to put her opponent up 5-0 and Muchova completed the bagel the next game. Next up for Muchova is Gauff, who was a 6-0 6-2 winner over Jelena Ostapenko earlier in the day.

[1/2] Sep 5, 2023; Flushing, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia reacts after winning a game against Taylor Fritz of the United States on day nine of the 2023 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. "I'm trying to enjoy the moments on the court, but there's so much stress and pressure going on that it's hard to have fun, so to say, on the court," Djokovic told reporters. "It's really about finding a way to navigate through the match and win a match for me, you know. "Both of the guys ... Shelton and Tiafoe, have a lot of charisma," Djokovic said.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 winner, overcame brutal heat and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-3 6-4 to set up a Friday meeting with defending champion Alcaraz. By the time Alcaraz and Zverev appeared on Arthur Ashe for the late match much of the sting had been taken out of the brutal conditions that Medvedev and Rublev faced. German Zverev, a U.S. Open finalist in 2020, showed up ready to fight but after some initial resistance the tank emptied and it was a straightforward win for Alcaraz in the end. "I'm feeling really comfortable playing in this court, playing here in New York," said Alcaraz.

CNN —Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the US Open semifinals with an emphatic victory over American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday. Victory ensured that Djokovic’s hopes of winning a 24th grand slam title remain alive, as he seeks to equal Margaret Court’s outright record and extend his own men’s record. I thrive on that energy, whatever the energy is, use it as a fuel to try and play my best tennis,” Djokovic added. Fritz, who is enjoying his best run at his home grand slam, continued to grow into the game and gave Djokovic a stern test in the third set. The American earned multiple break points against the 36-year-old, but Djokovic continued to produce in the most important moments to stay ahead.

By the time it was over, Ostapenko had 36 unforced errors compared to 14 for Gauff. With the win, Gauff avenged her round of 16 loss to the Latvian at this year's Australian Open that left the American in tears. Despite delivering a lopsided win to reach the second semi-final of her career, Gauff said she never felt comfortable on the court against Ostapenko. "I know the game she plays, she has ability to come back no matter the scoreline, so I was just really trying to get every point, trying to play every ball in," said Gauff. Up next for Gauff, who is the youngest American to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001, will be either Czech 10th seed and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova or Romanian 30th seed Sorana Cirstea.

A spectator at the U.S. Open was removed early on Tuesday after Alexander Zverev, a player from Germany, told the umpire that he had heard the man say a phrase associated with the Nazi regime, according to a spokesman and a video of the encounter. CNN —A fan was ejected from a match at the US Open on Monday, organizers said, after German player Alexander Zverev complained about hearing the individual use a since-removed phrase from the German national anthem, which Germany reinterpreted as a call for Nazi superiority during World War II. With temperatures once again nudging towards 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), Djokovic turned in a cool, clinical effort, improving his record against American opposition at the U.S. Open to a perfect 12-0.
