Stocks hate this one weird trick from the calendar

New York CNN —Leap Day might seem like fun and games — until you consider Wall Street. To account for that gap, Julius Caesar in 45 BC decreed that an extra day be added every four years, leading to the Julian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 AD created the Gregorian calendar, coined the term “leap year” and established February 29 as the official leap day. He adds that a leap day can also help marginally raise corporate earnings, since companies get an extra day in a fiscal quarter to operate. History shows that stocks tend to perform worse when an additional day is added to the calendar.

Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

Reddit's initial public offering will include a quirk that allows some of its most active users to buy the stock. "Our users have a deep sense of ownership over the communities they create on Reddit. We want this sense of ownership to be reflected in real ownership — for our users to be our owners. But the Reddit users that participate in the IPO will not be subject to a lock-up agreement, the filing said, which could add to volatility in the stock. Reddit users have already proven that they have a taste for trading volatile stocks.

America has gone from a pandemic crash and recession fears to stocks at record highs and an economic boom. Lockdowns, wars, shortages, inflation, interest rates, day trading, and AI have all played a role. Noam Galai/SOPA/Getty ImagesMany Americans also socked away money during the pandemic, as they saved on expenses like travel and live entertainment. Stimulus-fueled demand, combined with pandemic and war-related supply disruptions, caused inflation to spike to a 40-year high of 9.1% in June that year. The Fed swiftly raised interest rates to rein in the price growth, lifting them from virtually zero to upward of 5% in under 18 months, and hasn't touched them since.

While 2024 and 2025 boast franchise-rich movie slates, Wall Street doesn't expect ticket sales to top $10 billion domestically until 2026. The domestic box office has not hit that benchmark since 2019 before the Covid pandemic. When the box office does again surpass that threshold, Disney could be the driving force. After all, the first Avatar generated nearly $800 million at the domestic box office after its release in 2009. Therefore, where industry experts see gaps between major tent poles, there could be smaller-budgeted films that add incremental value to the overall box office.

Reddit reportedly seeks to launch IPO in March

Social media platform Reddit has drawn up detailed plans to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in March, moving forward with a listing it has been eyeing for more than three years, according to people familiar with the matter. The offering would also test the willingness of some Reddit users to back the company's stock market debut. Reddit, which filed confidentially for its IPO in December 2021, is planning to make its public filing in late February, launch its roadshow in early March, and complete the IPO by the end of March, two of the sources said. It will decide on what IPO valuation it will pursue closer to the time of the listing, according to the sources. The company held back from pulling the IPO trigger until it came closer to profitability.

SAG-AFTRA members and supporters chant outside Paramount Studios on day 118 of their strike against the Hollywood studios on November 8, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. Before the actors' union reached a labor deal with studios Wednesday night, Disney CEO Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin that the strike's impact on the business had so far "been negligible." Because of the actors' strike, Sony cut its movie unit's fiscal year operating-profit forecast to 115 billion yen from 120 billion yen. "We have incorporated the impact that can be assumed at the present time into our forecast for the fiscal year." In July, while Hollywood actors and writers were both on strike, Sony postponed the release of Marvel Studios collaboration "Kraven the Hunter" to next year and delayed its next "Spider-Verse" movie, both potential blockbusters.

However, the rally has run out of steam as several Fed policymakers this week pushed back against market expectations that the central bank will begin cutting interest rates soon. "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" broke a concert-film box-office record on its opening weekend. The movie pulled in $95 million to $97 million worth of ticket sales, AMC Theatres said. Swift’s tour has given the US economy a big boost in 2023, with even the Federal Reserve noticing its impact. "The Eras Tour" could also break records for the strongest October debut for any film. Box office analysts became Swifties in the lead-up to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film release, estimating blockbuster-style opening weekend numbers. While the pop singer fell short of the $100 million benchmark, domestic ticket sales still topped $95 million, according to distributor AMC Entertainment. Already, the film has shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing concert film release domestically, surpassing Justin Beiber's "Never Say Never" film release, which hauled in $73 million over the course of its run in theaters in 2011, in a single weekend. Swift's Eras Tour film is also the widest-released concert film in history, arriving in more than 3,850 domestic locations during its debut. Initially, expectations said Swift could tally between $40 million and $60 million on Friday, on her way to an opening weekend draw of as much as $150 million.

Taylor Swift fans had just eight hours to buy tickets for last-minute Thursday night previews of her Eras Tour concert film. Box office analysts don't see the small Thursday night haul as any indication of the potential success of Swift's film. Expectations are that Swift could tally between $40 million and $60 million on Friday, on her way to a an opening weekend draw of as much as $150 million. Swift's film is on pace to open in around 3,850 theaters, making it the widest domestic release of a concert film. AMC Entertainment, which is distributing the film, reported last week that presales for its theaters had already exceeded $100 million for the full run of Swift's film.
