CNN —Adidas has apologized for “any upset or distress caused,” after releasing an ad campaign for some retro sneakers based on a model first released during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Adidas then seemingly deleted any social media posts featuring her after criticism from Jewish groups and Israel. However, journalist Mehdi Hasan took issue with this line of criticism against Adidas and Hadid. “Bella Hadid has absolutely nothing in common with the 1972 terrorists – other than the fact that she is Palestinian,” Hasan posted on X. The Adidas controversy comes a week before the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics.

☆ Adidas shares rise after hiking 2024 guidance

Shares in Adidas were slightly higher on Wednesday after the company announced it would hike its full year 2024 earnings guidance following better-than-expected preliminary results for the second quarter. Adidas rose nearly 5% after markets opened on Wednesday before paring gains to around 2% by the market close. Adidas said its revenues rose 11% in the second quarter, compared to the previous year. Excluding sales of the struggling Yeezy line in both year, currency-neutral revenue rose 16% in the quarter, Adidas noted. The company had already hiked its 2024 outlook once this year after releasing its first-quarter results, which also beat expectations.

Chinese state media outlet Economic View reported Wednesday that both former employees had worked in marketing for Adidas China. The reported complaint alleged that a senior executive in Greater China who manages Adidas’ marketing budget had embezzled millions of euros and taken huge kickbacks from external advertising and celebrity agencies. Greater China — a region that encompasses mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — contributes 15% of the company’s sales. In mainland China, Adidas is the second largest international sportswear brand behind Nike (NKE). Adidas is well known for playing the “celebrity” card in its marketing in China.

Adidas has launched an investigation into allegations of large-scale bribery in China after the company received a whistleblower complaint that accused senior staff of embezzling "millions of euros", the Financial Times reported on Sunday. Adidas confirmed that it had received an anonymous letter on June 7 indicating potential compliance violations in China. The German sportswear company said it was investigating this matter together with external legal counsel. According to the FT, the letter alleges that Adidas staff received kickbacks from external service providers who were commissioned by the company that include "millions in cash from suppliers, and physical items such as real estate". China sales of the German sportswear giant grew by 8% in the first-quarter, the company reported earlier.
