Hong Kong CNN —The world’s largest brewer is counting the costs of being swept into a controversy over Bud Light in the United States. AB InBev said Thursday that US revenue fell 10% in the second quarter as sales of its top brand slumped. AB InBev responded by saying it took its responsibilities to investors seriously. “Most consumers surveyed are favorable towards the Bud Light brand and approximately 80% are favorable or neutral,” the drinks maker added. Like many other businesses, AB InBev has rolled out cost-cutting measures this year, as it seeks to defend its global lead.

The problem: Users are still fleeing, and nearly half of revenue comes from interest that is destined to fade. Robinhood warned last quarter that a 100 basis-point drop in interest rates would lead to a hit equivalent to an 11% fall in revenue. When the Federal Reserve eventually turns to cutting rates, Robinhood will need more users to fill that hole.

Adidas and AB InBev influencer hangover may return

LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Adidas (ADSGn.DE) and Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) are showing some unexpected resilience in the face of influencer trouble. Belgium beer producer AB InBev, meanwhile, grappled with a different influencer headache. The world's largest brewer experienced an April consumer boycott after picking transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney to promote its popular Bud Light brew. And while AB InBev say 80% of its consumers still look favourably or are neutral on Bud Light, the brand was dethroned as the top selling U.S. beer in May. Still, Adidas trades at 10 times its forecast 2025 EBITDA, below its peer Nike's (NKE.N) 16 times, and AB InBev trails Heineken (HEIN.AS) by an even larger margin.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Molson Coors Beverage (TAP.N) on Tuesday raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, boosted by strong demand for its core brands Miller Lite and Coors Light. For the Americas segment, Molson Coors' net sales rose 10.7% in the second quarter as it shipped more premium beers. Molson Coors now expects full-year 2023 sales to grow in high single-digit percentage, on a constant currency basis. Annual underlying income before income taxes is expected to increase between 23% and 26%, on a constant-currency basis, compared with a low single-digit percentage increase forecast earlier. However, Molson Coors posted second-quarter sales of $3.27 billion, missing estimates of $3.29 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Likely Republican voters, however, told the New York Times they'd prefer the government stay away from limiting what corporations can support. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign is in hot water after a majority of likely Republican voters said they want the government to stay away from influencing what corporations can and can't support. As he continues to double and triple-down on his anti-woke schtick, it doesn't seem like it's doing him many favors in the race to become the GOP presidential nominee. But as his presidential campaign falters and likely GOP voters make it clear that fighting "wokeism" isn't a priority, DeSantis keeps belaboring the point.

DeSantis has feuded with Disney for over a year, but now seems to have set his sights on Bud Light. DeSantis has directed an inquiry into AB InBev after Bud Light partnered with a trans influencer. DeSantis said Disney had "crossed the line" and that the state would "fight back." Disney sued DeSantis for retaliation and violating the company's First Amendment rights — a charge the governor and the state has denied. It's notable that DeSantis is taking issue with the financial fallout Bud Light has experienced as a result of partnering with Mulvaney — when DeSantis himself encouraged consumers to boycott the brand.

Ron DeSantis has told his government to investigate whether Bud Light's parent company breached its duties to shareholders as a conservative backlash continues to rage over the beer brand's deal with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Shares of AB InBev are down about 2% this year, while the broader market is up. Sales of Bud Light have plummeted in the wake of conservative uproar and a boycott over the Mulvaney partnership. The firm also found Bud Light sales are down by about 25% from last year. Mulvaney has criticized Bud Light for not standing by her during the boycott.

Partnering with a young, popular trans woman could help a brand like Bud Light reach a more youthful demographic. But because Bud Light managed to alienate everyone, it hasn’t gotten the benefit of a buycott. Others are more breezy, showing people enjoying Bud Light despite the inconveniences of summer (sunburn, thunderstorm). July 10 (Reuters) - Constellation Brands' (STZ.N) Modelo Especial was the top-selling beer brand in the United States for a second consecutive month in June, after first dethroning Anheuser-Busch InBev's (ABI.BR) Bud Light in May. Modelo Especial was the top-selling beer brand for the four weeks ended July 1, with an 8.7% share of overall beer sales through retail stores for the period, while Bud Light came in second with a 7% share, according to consulting company Bump Williams, which sources data from NielsenIQ. Sales of Bud Light and Budweiser dropped 28% and 11.7%, respectively, from a year earlier, while Modelo Especial sales rose 8.5%. Azer added that consumers had quickly figured out AB InBev's other beer brands like Michelob Ultra and Natural Light, which are also seeing a fall in sales. Corporate boycotts clash with political reality

WASHINGTON, June 15 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Republicans are firing from the hip when it comes to corporate boycotts. Conservative Americans’ changing beer habits may have contributed to Bud Light being pulled from its spot as the number one beer in the United States for the first time in more than two decades. In May, Bud Light sales dropped a quarter compared to the same month last year, consulting companies Bump Williams and NielsenIQ said Wednesday. As conservatives encourage consumption based on political views, they may in some cases pull cash from their own pockets. Still, the Anheuser-Busch InBev brand Bud Light leads U.S. beer sales so far this year, according to Bump Williams. The company's shares have dropped nearly 15% since the start of April, when Mulvaney posted a video of a personalized Bud Light can, which sparked anti-LGBTQ+ outrage. Bernstein said Bud Light volumes have further to fall, but is still optimistic on AB InBev's stock going forward. Analyst Trevor Stirling noted that the massive selloff in the stock stemming from customer backlash over the company's social media partnership with a transgender influencer was largely "overdone." Still, he said Bud Light volumes could continue to take a hit after already falling by roughly 30% in the U.S. in the second quarter. "We also assume that Bud Light volumes will take a permanent -15% haircut with an associated drag on operating leverage," the analyst said. Last month, HSBC downgraded Anheuser-Busch InBev stock over what the firm labeled a " Bud Light crisis ," and noted that the company could be contending with larger problems than it wants to admit.
