Credit card giant American Express raised its full-year profit forecast on Friday, as its wealthy customers persisted in splurging on travel, dining and entertainment. The company also reported better-than-expected second-quarter profit, underscoring the benefit it has enjoyed by focusing on a premium customer base. The company sees its 2024 earnings per share between $13.30 and $13.80, versus the $12.65 to $13.15 range it had forecast earlier. In the second quarter ended June 30, profit was $3.02 billion, or $4.15 per share, 39% higher than a year ago. Shares of the New York-based company fell 2% in premarket trading.

American Express — Shares fell nearly 2% after the financial company reported second-quarter revenue of $16.33 billion, below the $16.59 billion expected from analysts polled by LSEG. However, American Express' adjusted earnings per share were $3.49, above the $3.25 consensus estimate. Comerica's net interest income came in at $533 million, above the $530.5 million expected from analysts polled by FactSet. Analysts surveyed by LSEG were expecting $1.54 in earnings per share on $1.97 billion of revenue. Earnings per share came in at $2.51 per share, excluding items, topping the $1.98 LSEG consensus estimate.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley designated Apple their top pick, raised their price target to $273 a share and reiterated their buy-equivalent rating. Apple Intelligence, however, represents an entirely new technology with the potential change how we all interact with our devices. And notably, replacement cycles are at an all-time high of 4.8 years, Morgan Stanley estimated. Overall inflation was probably 3.1 percent in June on an annual basis, down from 3.3 percent in May and the coolest reading since January, based on Bloomberg economist forecasts. Economists forecast just 0.2 percent core inflation on a monthly basis, which would match the reading for May. Fed officials have been watching for evidence that inflation is still coming down as they contemplate when to begin cutting interest rates. And Thursday’s inflation reading is poised to be markedly cooler than the 9.1 percent rate when inflation peaked at in 2022. Fed officials meet in late July, but few economists expect a move that early.
