In the summer of 1989, Tim Walz faced a difficult choice. A newly minted college graduate from small-town Nebraska, he had just turned down a stable, 9-to-5 job offer and moved across the world to teach at a local high school in China. He had made it as far as Hong Kong, just across the Chinese border, when People’s Liberation Army tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square to crush pro-democracy protests. As high school teachers in Nebraska and Minnesota, Mr. Walz and his wife, Gwen, regularly led trips to China in the 1990s and early 2000s to introduce students to China’s history and culture. Mr. Walz has said that he has traveled to China some 30 times, including for his honeymoon.

As supporters walked into the first rally for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, they were given light-up wristbands like the ones Taylor Swift’s fans wear at her concerts. The Biden-to-Harris swap has, in just three weeks, flipped the election on its head. Across the country, the vice president’s crowds have been chanting her refrain: “We’re not going back.”Here are five striking themes that coursed through the first week of the Harris-Walz ticket. Ms. Harris is campaigning as if she is winning, even as she cautions Democrats that she and Mr. Walz remain the “underdogs” against Mr. Trump.

Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, his military history seemed like an asset. About two months later, after his retirement, his unit, the Minnesota National Guard's 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, was ordered to mobilize. In 1996, he transferred to the Minnesota National Guard and held various field artillery positions, including firing battery chief, operations sergeant, first sergeant, and command sergeant major. A month later, in March 2005, the National Guard announced the potential partial mobilization of troops from the Minnesota National Guard. To retire as a command sergeant major, Walz would also have had to hold the title for three years.

Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (L), and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH). Child tax creditMinnesota's new child tax credit is unusual in its narrowness, but it is the most generous in the nation for low-income households. However, a permanent federal child tax credit expansion could be difficult, particularly amid a divided Congress and increasing concerns over the federal budget deficit. Despite the failed procedural vote, Crapo voiced openness to negotiating a "child tax credit solution that a majority of Republicans can support." Vance was not present for the Senate vote, but has expressed support for the child tax credit.

In the 1980s, the U.S. military was in the middle of a transformation. Mr. Walz, now Minnesota governor and the presumptive Democratic candidate for vice president, raised his hand to join the Army National Guard just two days past his 17th birthday on April 8, 1981. Mr. Walz never went to war. And it ended when Mr. Walz was 41, as the military ramped up for war after Sept. 11. Since being picked as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate this week, he has found himself facing allegations previously aired by Minnesota Republicans and newly amplified by JD Vance, former President Donald J. Vice President Kamala Harris rolled into Arizona on Friday evening with the same political momentum that has infused her first swing across the country this week, drawing a crowd that her campaign estimated at more than 15,000 — her largest yet — in a Western state that not long ago appeared to be falling off the battleground map. Along with her newly minted running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Ms. Harris delivered a stump speech that is barely a week old, and yet familiar enough to an impassioned new following that some shouted her lines before she did. The rally was her fourth in four days with an arena-filling crowd that demonstrated the degree to which her candidacy replacing President Biden’s had remade the 2024 race. Mr. Walz relished the crowd that filed into the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Ariz., in 100-degree heat as he poked fun at Mr. Trump’s obsession with rally crowds.

In the western Nebraska town where Tim Walz came of age, teenagers gathered at the Frosty Drive-In after football practice and spent summers working on farms. The tree-lined streets of JD Vance’s hometown in Ohio surrounded a hulking steel mill that endured layoff after layoff. By his own telling, it was a community “hemorrhaging jobs and hope.”The rural Midwestern back stories presented by the two major-party vice-presidential candidates are strikingly different. Another is a glowing portrait of rural America offered by Mr. Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota who is Vice President Kamala Harris’s new running mate. The rival campaigns are using these opposing depictions of rural life to make very different appeals to voters.

The rally in Bozeman was Trump’s first since Vice President Kamala Harris officially secured the Democratic nomination and selected Minnesota Gov. “We need the Senate,” Trump told the crowd Friday, stressing the critical nature of the contest here. “His really is valor,” Trump said of Sheehy, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other deployments. Trump used the attention to toss a familiar laundry list of attacks against Harris, Walz and Democrats more broadly. “You can imagine if President Trump had to call Chuck Schumer and try to figure out how to get his nominees through,” Daines said.

The Mankato West Scarlets, who had started the 1999 high school football season with a miserable record of 2-4, had improbably swaggered into a state championship game. Their defense, though, would first have to repel the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets, who were from north of Minneapolis and trailed by a single touchdown. But inside the 10-yard line, a Scarlet defender intercepted the ball, effectively clinching a 35-28 victory and Mankato West’s first championship. A coach lifted Tim Walz, then the defensive coordinator and now the Democratic candidate for vice president, skyward. In Mr. Walz’s telling, the victory also eventually proved a launchpad for politics.

Walz has overseen a significant push for new housing, including reducing regulatory barriers to construction, and supported progressive efforts to support low-income tenants and homebuyers. In May 2023, he signed a $1 billion housing omnibus law, which included funding for programs ranging from downpayment assistance to workforce housing. A city leading the country on housing policyMinnesota's biggest city — Minneapolis — has long been a national leader on pro-housing policy. A lawsuit in 2022 paused the policy's implementation until the Minnesota state legislature passed a law — signed by Walz — in May allowing the plan to go forward. Over the last decade, Minneapolis has constructed a ton of new and dense housing, which has significantly improved affordability.

The stunning transformation of the 2024 presidential race will reach new heights Tuesday when Vice President Kamala Harris unveils her running mate after a sequence of events that left Republican nominee Donald Trump flailing. Harris is due to join her vice presidential pick at a rally in Philadelphia that will kick off a joint sprint across an electoral map expanded by President Joe Biden’s shelving of his own reelection bid just over two weeks ago. In the final hours of her search after a compressed vetting period, Harris narrowed in on two candidates — Pennsylvania Gov. Tim Walz, 60, sources told CNN, although Arizona Sen. Where Tim Walz Stands on the Issues

Tim Walz of Minnesota, the newly announced running mate to Vice President Kamala Harris, has worked with his state’s Democratic-controlled Legislature to enact an ambitious agenda of liberal policies: free college tuition for low-income students, free meals for schoolchildren, legal recreational marijuana and protections for transgender people. “You don’t win elections to bank political capital,” Mr. Walz wrote last year about his approach to governing. “You win elections to burn political capital and improve lives.”Republicans have slammed these policies as big-government liberalism and accused Mr. Walz of taking a hard left turn since he represented a politically divided district in Congress years ago. Here is an overview of where Mr. Walz stands on some key issues. AbortionMr. Walz signed a bill last year that guaranteed Minnesotans a “fundamental right to make autonomous decisions” about reproductive health care on issues such as abortion, contraception and fertility treatments.

With only days to consider a range of contenders, Ms. Harris and her team were inundated with unsolicited advice — much of it public — about whom she should pick. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, who has also been vetted by the Harris team, appeared at a Harris campaign fund-raiser in Chicago. Mr. Biden was at home in Wilmington, Del., over the weekend while Ms. Harris interviewed prospective running mates in Washington. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether he had spoken to Ms. Harris as she finished her deliberations. Once she chooses, Ms. Harris will spend much of the next week with her running mate.

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, capping the Midwestern Democrat’s short but swift ascent from a relative unknown to a leading driver of the Democratic attacks on Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda. Before Walz was elected governor in 2018, he served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district that, both before and after his tenure, has been mostly dominated by Republicans. Walz, 60, is also a former high school teacher and football coach who served in the Army National Guard. Harris and Walz will appear together in Philadelphia later on Tuesday for the new Democratic ticket's first joint rally.

Tim Walz was born in rural West Point, Nebraska, in 1964. Walz was born in a rural area. "An awful lot of who I am was built on being a Nebraskan," Walz told the Omaha World-Herald in 2018. Walz often jokes that there were only 24 kids in his high school graduating class, including 12 cousins. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Walz's mother still resides in Nebraska.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, has chosen Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, elevating a former football coach whose rural roots, liberal policies and buzzy takedowns of former President Donald J. Trump have recently put him on the map. Mr. Walz, 60, emerged from a field of candidates who had better name recognition and more politically advantageous home states. Minnesota is not a top-tier presidential battleground and is unlikely to prove critical to a Harris-Walz victory. “One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep,” Ms. Harris said in a social media post confirming his selection.

Shapiro, despite having the backing of some unions in his state, alienated progressives over his past support for school vouchers. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, elevating the former teacher and Army National Guard veteran to join the Democratic ticket and help lead the party’s fight to defeat Donald Trump. The vice president held in-person interviews with Walz, Shapiro and Kelly on Sunday. In March, Walz accompanied Harris when she became the first sitting vice president to visit a clinic that performs abortions. During recent remarks at a “White Dudes for Harris” fundraiser, Walz made a rough-and-ready case for the vice president before would-be small-dollar donors.
