If this week's presidential election has you nervously eyeing your finances, you're not alone. Consider research published earlier this year from Carson Research Group, which tracked the performance of the S&P 500 under every presidency since 1953. If you followed the same strategy, but only invested with Democrats, you'd have about $60,000. "If you got out of the market because you didn't like the person who was in office, you gave up some really great gains," says Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at the Carson Group. "However, the anxiety and fear that's coming from it — it's still worth thinking about addressing that directly."

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange on Oct. 24, 2024. Brendan McDermid | ReutersStocks typically rise after a presidential election — but investors need to be prepared for some short-term choppiness first, history shows. The three major benchmarks on average have seen gains between Election Day and year-end in the presidential election year going back to 1980, according to CNBC data. However, investors shouldn't be expecting a straight shot up in the market after polls close. This means investors shouldn't be anticipating an immediate pop on Wednesday or the next few days after.

European markets are expected to start the week on a mostly positive note Monday, with all eyes on Tuesday's presidential election in the U.S. Earnings are set to come from BioNTech and Ryanair and data releases include European manufacturing purchasing managers' index data. Global market aftershocks may hinge heavily on which party takes control of Congress as a result of the vote. If control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate is divided, it would likely mean a maintaining of the status quo. Asia-Pacific markets rose Monday, while U.S. stock futures were mixed in overnight trading Sunday.

Investors have been accumulating shares of several big-name companies, from GE Vernova to United Airlines , during the market's recent dip. But those and other overbought stocks could be due for a pullback, according to one popular yardstick. Strong earnings from tech giants Amazon and Intel late Thursday were partly responsible for equity gains on Friday, as investors still look to megacap tech stocks for leadership. CNBC Pro screened for stocks that are considered technically overbought on the basis of their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Companies with a 14-day RSI above 70 are often regarded as overbought, signaling a pullback may be ahead, while a 14-day RSI below 30 often suggests a stock is oversold and could see future upside.

This, despite the fact that younger investors were more optimistic about the economy, their incomes, their living situations, and their investments. Millennial investors have been deeply scarred by two life-changing crises in their young lives. But if you look at hard numbers from the Federal Reserve about what millennial investors actually own, you can see that this stereotype is misguided. When you compare millennials' cash levels with Gen X's cash levels at the same age, though, the risk aversion becomes clear. But when it comes to younger investors, I think the scars run deeper than worries about a coming downturn.
