My household was conservative and I tend to vote Republican, but I never stick to the party for the sake of consistency. I've seen the state change politically, watching it go from blue to red as I went from childhood, to adulthood, to old age. President Biden was, quite frankly, too old four years ago, and he'll certainly be too old four years from now. As far as my dad was concerned, anyone beyond Medicare age, which Biden and Trump have long surpassed, should be passing the torch. I've been thinking about politics longer than both Biden and Trump; I've got them beat by one and four years respectively.

To evaluate each state's infrastructure, our Top States study considers not just roads, bridges, ports and airports. The state broadband office notes that it is the nation's ninth-largest allocation per capita. The state's power grid is among America's least reliable, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. The severe weather means power outages are frequent as well. Since then, the power outages have persisted, making Maine's grid among the worst in the nation.

Carey, a portfolio manager at the U.S.-headquartered investment advisory firm which manages around $4 billion, estimates that returns from AI will be across "multi-years [and] decades." AI companies have a very, very large moat, not only on the hardware side, but also, on the software side. Among the names Carey is bullish on is power management company Eaton . Shares of the U.S. power management company have had a bumpy ride over recent days, but remain up nearly 30% year-to-date and 54.4% in the last 12 months. He noted the "strong demand" for the small-cap's packaged solutions and products.

So far, the only part of Earth AI seems hell-bent on dominating is the power grid. AI data centers are doubling the pace of electricity demand growth in the US to the extent that demand could exceed supply in just two years without action, according to Bernstein Research. The potential shortfall could mean higher prices for the computing power AI developers of all sizes are clamoring for, along with ample opportunity for investors willing to build up supply. How are AI companies planning aheadIt's not just the total power needed for AI computing infrastructure, it's the unique cadence of the power need and the cooling AI chips require. Amazon is clearing some of these hurdles by colocating some data centers with nuclear power sites.

The expected demand from data centers and electric vehicles in the U.S. is equivalent to the entire electricity demand of Turkey, the world's 18th largest economy, according to Rystad. NextEra Energy , parent of Skantze's subsidiary, is the largest power company in the S&P utilities sector by market capitalization and it operates the biggest portfolio of renewable energy assets in the nation. They need this load to drive the next iteration of growth," Skantze told the Reuters Global Energy Transition conference in New York City this week. 'Energy security brings national security'Southern Company , the second-largest utility in the U.S. by market cap, is also seeing a historic wave of electricity demand. A dog looks out the window from a Tesla electric vehicle charging at a Tesla Supercharger location in Santa Monica, California on May 15, 2024. Last year, the U.S. EV leader received a rank of 257 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with 265 problems per 100 vehicles on average for EVs from traditional automakers. Across the broader industry, not just BEVs, Tesla has consistently ranked toward the bottom in initial quality since J.D. BEVs averaged 266 problems per 100 vehicles, 86 points higher than gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, which averaged 180 problems per 100 vehicles, according to the study. "It is not surprising that the introduction of new technology has challenged manufacturers to maintain vehicle quality," Hanley said.

Montenegro’s energy minister said the shutdown was caused by a sudden increase in power consumption brought on by high temperatures, and by the heat itself overloading systems. “This was just waiting to happen in this heat,” Gentiana, a 24-year-old student in Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, told Reuters. Suppliers in the four countries said they started restoring supply by mid-afternoon and power was largely back by the evening. Power in Albania was restored within half an hour, but the country remained at a high risk of further shutdowns as power usage and heat levels were still high, he said. Western Balkan nations have seen a boom in solar energy investment, meant to ease a power crisis that had threatened a shift away from coal.

By providing diagnostics and recalibration of the high-tech systems in modern vehicles, the company hopes to decrease costs associated with EV ownership and repairs. The existing collision repair industry is well-equipped to handle most physical fixes like replacing a bumper, a busted windshield, brakes and paint or adjusting alignment. But for many collision repair centers and auto dealerships, ensuring all sensors, software and computers are working properly can prove time-consuming and expensive. Kinetic puts its robotic systems and technicians to work helping these shops and dealerships fix the finicky, "digital" aspects of customers' cars. Then Kinetic's software, which is connected to the vehicle's systems, will initiate and track the completion of those fixes.

In 2023, Texas led the nation in solar installations on its power grid, surpassing California for its second consecutive year. Explosive power demand poses a challenge to the Biden administration's goal of converting the U.S. power grid to 100% clean electricity by 2035. Nextracker is a leading U.S. solar firm, building systems that allow panels to track to the position of the sun, improving the efficiency of solar power plants. Shugar pointed to the massive number of renewable projects in the U.S. seeking connection to the power grid. But as energy demand increases, the value of each additional hour should rise, eventually making longer duration batteries more cost effective, he said.

NextEra Energy stock fell nearly 5% in early trading Tuesday after announcing a plan to sell $2 billion in equity units to finance power projects as electricity demand rises and to pay back debt. The Florida-based power company, which operates the largest portfolio of renewable energy in the U.S., will issue equity units for $50, which will serve as a contract to purchase shares no later than June 1, 2027. The utility sector has gained about 8.5% over the past three months, outpacing the 6.2% gain by the S&P 500. But the utility space has cooled off over the past month, with NextEra falling 5% over that period. About 71% of Wall Street analysts rate NextEra as the equivalent of buy, while 24% have put a hold on the stock and 4.8% have recommended that investors sell.

The solar panels are part of the renewable energy sources that power Apple's European data center in Viborg. "There'll be some gas, but we believe based especially on the data published by the DOE, the predominant energy source for these data centers is going to be renewable energy," Shugar told CNBC in an interview Thursday. Whereas older data centers may have been 100 to 200 megawatts in size, some of the "monster data centers" today may be as big as 1,000 megawatts, Shugar said. The artificial intelligence boom is fueling demand for power, with many tech companies rapidly developing infrastructure as they compete for dominance. Data centers house vast amounts of computing power needed for AI workloads, and are intense power-guzzling workhorses. But the need for power goes beyond data centers and other infrastructure, according to Goldman. Goldman cited studies which showed that AI data centers can consume up to 10 times the energy of their regular counterparts. Taiwan's tech industry extends across a "comprehensive global AI supply chain," with tech manufacturers consuming a "substantial" amount of power.

White House to support new nuclear power plants in the U.S.

The White House on Wednesday plans to announce new measures to support the development of new U.S. nuclear power plants, a large potential source of carbon-free electricity the government says is needed to combat climate change. And a new tool will help developers figure out how to cut capital costs for new nuclear reactors. No new U.S. nuclear plants are currently being built. Vogtle is now the largest U.S. source of clean energy, the White House said. Nuclear energy accounts for about 19% of U.S. power generation, compared with 4% for solar and 10% for wind.

Companies that manufacture small, quickly deployable natural gas turbines and generators are poised to benefit as surging electricity demand from data centers creates major delays in adding new capacity to the power grid, according to Morgan Stanley. "We believe this greater appreciation for the current grid connectivity challenges will heighten investor interest in/focus on emerging 'time to power' solutions," the analysts told clients. Power projects waiting for connection to the Lone Star state's grid have surged from 17 gigawatts to about 40 gigawatts in less than two years, according to the analysts. There is also an extensive wait time for diesel-powered, backup generators for new data center projects, according to Morgan Stanley. Companies such as Cummins and Caterpillar are also poised to benefit because they manufacture natural gas-powered generators that provide backup power onsite, according to Morgan Stanley.

Vistra Corp. has doubled over that period, while Constellation Energy is up nearly 62% and NextEra Energy has surged 34%. "This is not your old utility, where you just get a dividend and you're happy," Shahriar Pourreza, managing director of energy, power and utilities at Guggenheim Partners, told CNBC. The sector was oversold coming into 2024, with the market going too far in pricing in the impact of interest rates, Pourreza said. Power companies with deregulated assets are able to respond to market conditions more quickly than traditional utilities, he said. The tech sector is looking for clean energy to power data centers as they are simultaneously trying to limit their carbon footprints.

Opinion: A Russian weapon could wipe out US space edge

Here, the NanoRacks-Remove Debris satellite is deployed from the International Space Station in 2018. Before revelations about Russia’s development of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon, there had been indications of global recognition that the use of certain space weapons was bad for everyone. The proposed defense budget for 2025 does not reflect the scale and urgency of the need to counter space threats and protect space systems. Learning how to operate satellites in a space environment clogged with debris or increased radiation caused by a space weapon is also important. We need a two-pronged effort to prepare for the worst: Double down on efforts to protect and maintain access to space in a hostile space environment and consider how to operate without space.

Power demand is expected to surge over the next decade driven primarily by artificial intelligence and data centers, with natural gas , renewable and utility stocks poised to benefit, according to Goldman Sachs. AI and data centers will consume 8% of U.S. power demand by 2030, compared with 3% currently, according to Goldman projections. Natural gas will power 60% of the growth, while renewables are expected to make up the other 40%, according to the investment bank. Goldman recommends that investors buy call options for stocks most levered to the coming power demand surge. These buy-rated stocks are attractive because their current volatility is well below their median implied volatility, according to Goldman.

Republican Mark Christie opposed the rule, dismissing it as a gift to solar and wind power operators. Many power companies and Republican-led states don't want to spend money on new transmission lines or upgrades for renewable energy, creating conflicts with Democratic states that have ambitious clean-energy goals. The rule is intended to streamline how power lines are sited and how costs are shared between states. It could accelerate construction of new transmission lines for wind, solar and other renewable power and add huge amounts of clean energy to the grid. The new rule "will improve regional transmission planning, break down barriers to grid buildout and support the delivery of more affordable and reliable power,″ Zaidi said.
