Confirmation of a likely genetic cause for the children’s deaths has implications far beyond Australia for parents who have been accused of killing or harming their babies. The advances in genetic testing used to free Folbigg are giving other families hope that science may explain why their children have died, but experts say sometimes even that can’t exonerate parents – often mothers – accused of harming them. How the science is helping othersOne of the lead authors of the study, Professor Carola Vinuesa, says that Folbigg’s case has encouraged other families and lawyers to come forward, seeking genetic evidence to clear mothers accused of harming their babies. Some mothers accused of injuring their children are seeking a genetic explanation for their symptoms to counter claims of child abuse, she said. “The majority of these mothers have not harmed their children, but the children have these very rare conditions.

From ‘Front-Page Girls’ to Newsroom Leaders

Yet few readers today will place Ross’s name, let alone those of the “front-page girls” she celebrated. Papers with strapped budgets took on more women, a trajectory that mirrors the history of professions like teaching and nursing. Still, as late as the 1950s, Kroeger writes, “women journalists inched across a swinging rope bridge toward fuller acceptance but still in single file.” Their pluck went only so far. Between 1970 and 1983, anti-discrimination suits roiled The Times, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post and The Associated Press, among other outlets. Before those proceedings, women had tended to cluster “on the bottom rungs of a company ladder with broken steps,” Kroeger writes.

My colleague Ashley Stewart examines the growing threat of Microsoft now that Bell is free from his noncompete purgatory. Look into the future here for Bell — and Microsoft — without Amazon's restrictions.

A waterfront area in Battery Park City, which is at the center of a major climate resilience project. Emma Newburger | CNBCWagner Park, a cherished waterfront greenspace in Battery Park City, boasts unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. Wagner Park will soon be demolished and built ten feet higher as part of the Battery Park City Resiliency Project. "The Wagner Park plan has gotten some critical attention from a few, but it's also gotten a lot of support." "This community is going to be fine one way or the other," Pawlowski said of Battery Park City.
Still, it's unclear how these vulnerable coastal communities — and others across the country — will ultimately fare. In this scenario, most of the communities surrounding Jamaica Bay would be inundated every day by high tides. These types of natural projects, some of which are already underway at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, would be balanced with the Army Corp's man-made engineered solutions. Additionally, the proposed Jamaica Bay Storm Surge Barrier, located to the east of the Marine Parkway Bridge, would close during major storms. Shoreline restoration is underway at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens.

With the most recent version of Photoshop, the Quick Selection Tool streamlines the process for you, making separating your subject from the background simple. Pull up the image you'd like to remove the background from by clicking "File," and then "Open…" from the top menu. The Quick Selection tool isn't the only way to go about isolating subjects in Photoshop, but it is definitely one of the easier ways. Deselect "Layer 1," and select the "Background" layer, with your photo as the icon image, under "Layers." With that layer selected, you will now see the option "Remove Background" under the "Quick Actions" panel.
