Future Publishing | Future Publishing | Getty ImagesThe Red Sea crisis has fueled a sharp spike in ocean freight inflation over the past two months, but there are signs that upward pressure on shipping rates on key trade routes may have peaked. Shipping rates on ocean routes from Asia to the U.S. are beginning to decline, based on analysis of the latest cargo data from Xeneta, a leading ocean and air freight benchmarking platform. The reversal in ocean freight pricing comes despite a maritime threat to global commercial shipping companies that shows no signs of waning. The timing of the rate decreases could influence new contracts in negotiations between ocean freight carriers and shippers at the beginning of March. "Either way, the next few weeks is crunch time for both ocean freight carriers and shippers and could define their fortunes for the rest of 2024."

Moller-Maersk, the second-largest global ocean carrier, is advising customers to prepare for a Red Sea crisis that could stretch well into the second half of this year. "Unfortunately, we don't see any change in the Red Sea happening anytime soon," Charles van der Steene, regional president for Maersk North America, tells CNBC. After attacks on two U.S.-flagged Maersk vessels on January 24, the Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, Maersk Line, Limited — a U.S. subsidiary of Maersk, which operates U.S.-flagged vessels independently — announced it would no longer traverse the Red Sea. The global shipping and logistics company's cautious view of the Red Sea safety conditions comes despite a U.S.-led multinational military operation in the region, Operation Prosperity Guardian. "Our advice to our customers is specifically about building upon the uncertainty by being agile," said van der Steene.

If higher Treasury yields persist, Piper Sandler believes certain stocks could see their earnings at risk. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose as high as 4.16% on Monday after hitting a low around 3.8% last week. The 10-year Treasury was last hovering at the 4.09% level. It tells CNBC that rates on ocean routes from Asia to Europe and the Mediterranean are beginning to decline, but for U.S.-bound trade, prices are still climbing. Rates for cargo headed to the U.S. are still risingBut for U.S companies, while some have negotiating leverage, shipping rates are not seeing any reprieve. According to Sand, rates for the trade route from the Far East to the U.S. East Coast are still heading higher. "Everyone is accusing everyone at the moment, which is normal during situations when there is so much uncertainty in the market," Sand said. SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A judge on Thursday conditionally released U.S. rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine after he was arrested in the Dominican Republic last week on domestic violence charges. After the hearing, Tekashi 6ix9ine’s attorney, Waldo Pimentel, accused prosecutors of “fabricating” evidence against his client. Meanwhile, prosecutor Ana Andrea Villa Camacho explained why she had requested that Tekashi 6ix9ine remain held. It is the second time that Hernández is arrested in the Dominican Republic. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Two federal environmental agencies issued plans Thursday to better protect endangered whales amid offshore wind farm development. The agencies said they are trying to find ways to better protect the whales amid a surge of offshore wind farm projects, particularly on the U.S. East Coast. They plan to look for ways to mitigate potential adverse impacts of offshore wind projects on the whales and their habitat. They and other scientific agencies say there is no evidence that offshore wind preparation work is harming or killing whales. As of September 2023, there were 30 offshore wind lease areas along the East Coast, the two agencies said.

Damage is shown after a heavy rain storm causes a small river to overflow into a neighborhood in San Diego, California, U.S. January 22, 2024. SAN DIEGO — Winter storms for relatively dry San Diego are hit-or-miss, but mostly miss, so the wallop of a Pacific front Monday stunned California's second-largest city even as it was expecting rain. It was the wettest January day on record in San Diego, the National Weather Service said. Residents in the Southcrest neighborhood just southeast of downtown had to be rescued by firefighters as standing water quickly surrounded their apartment complex, according to authorities and coverage from NBC San Diego. "At least in the short term, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot on the horizon for Southern California," Maxwell said.

Bab el Mandeb is just 70 miles long and 20 miles wide, within easy range of land-based anti-ship missiles, drones and even howitzers firing extended-range shells. The Houthis also have Iranian-made anti-ship ballistic missiles with a range of around 300 miles, as well as drones. Even a giant aircraft carrier is hard to spot in the vastness of the ocean, and an anti-ship missile's onboard radar can only scan a small area . "If so, we expect the soaring freight rates and equipment shortage will continue till the third quarter," it advised clients. This would be on top of the revenue lost by diverted container vessels which are required to pay between $500,000-$600,000 per transit. "However, given the longer transit times vessels are experiencing, the market may face a shortage of empties across Asia until sailings normalize." Evelyn Fornes, Home Depot spokeswoman, said it is working with logistics carriers to find alternate routes to limit any impact from the Red Sea conflict. East Coast freight rates soar While freight rates for U.S. West Coast ports have yet to spike, freight rates for the East Coast and Gulf are up.

The railroad Canadian Pacific Kansas City is poised to benefit from mounting disruptions to shipping in the Red Sea that are rerouting global trade routes, according to Redburn Atlantic. The railroad's land bridge through North America is an attractive alternative for cargo from Asia to the U.S. East Coast as the Suez and Panama canals face disruptions to traffic. Container shipping through the Red Sea was down 30% in mid-December due to repeated attacks by Iran-allied Houthi militants in Yemen, Holmes told clients. CPKC's land bridge through Mexico north to the U.S. shortens transit time by 10 to 14 days compared to the Panama Canal, Holmes wrote. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Brutally cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills stayed put across much of the U.S. Monday, promising the coldest temperatures ever for Iowa's presidential nominating contest, holding up travelers, and testing the mettle of NFL fans in Buffalo for a playoff game that was delayed a day by wind-whipped snow. Saco, Montana, dropped to minus 51 F (minus 26 C). Subzero lows reached as far south as Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and parts of Indiana, Taylor said. The person killed — the fifth death nationwide attributed to the Arctic cold — was among four snowmobilers attempting to cross U.S. Highway 40 in the Strawberry Reservoir area. Ice jam warnings were issued in Wyoming and Montana, where the bitter cold could cause rivers and streams to lock up with ice and overflow their banks.
