The suit alleges that Meta , Snap , ByteDance and Google (whose parent company is Alphabet ) knowingly "designed, developed, produced, operated, promoted, distributed, and marketed their platforms to attract, capture, and addict youth, with minimal parental oversight." They claim that New York's school districts and various health and social services have been severely impacted by children who have suffered negative mental health consequences stemming from their use of popular social media apps. "In collaboration with youth, mental health and parenting experts, we've built services and policies to give young people age-appropriate experiences, and parents robust controls." New York's lawsuit echoes similar allegations made against Meta, Snap, TikTok and Alphabet in litigation filed in 2022 in the Northern District of California. Meanwhile, a coalition of over 40 attorneys general filed a joint federal lawsuit against Meta alleging that its products are addictive and harm mental health.

In my debut novel, a family retraces their lineage in order to be eligible for the nation’s first federal reparations program for Black Americans. The idea that the United States could ever collectively support a national reparations policy for Black people seemed, well, the stuff of fiction. Since then, reparations task forces and commissions have been created in California, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. To address systemic inequalities rooted in federal law, a federal reparations policy is required. I decided to write about reparations after researching the racial wealth gap, the statistics of which continue to paint a picture of widespread systemic failure.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis City Council overrode a mayoral veto on Thursday and approved a resolution that calls for a cease-fire in Gaza and for an end to U.S. military funding to Israel. Wazwaz said the Minneapolis resolution is unique because it calls for a complete end to U.S. aid to Israel. The United States has had a porous border with Mexico for decades, and the situation has worsened in the past few years, with more than 10,000 people entering the U.S. on some days. Mayors, governors, and immigration experts — as well as voters — have long urged Congress to fix the problem. And for anybody who has grown cynical about Washington, the plan offered reasons for both surprise and further cynicism. The surprising part is that productive bipartisanship seems to be alive, even on an issue as divisive as immigration. (AP) — The city of Memphis released hours of additional video and audio on Tuesday in the case of five fired police officers charged with the violent beating and death of Tyre Nichols last January. Police video released weeks after the killing showed the five officers beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother just steps from his house. That video also showed the officers milling about and talking with each other as Nichols sat on the ground, struggling with his injuries. The four who remain charged face federal trial in May and state court trial in August. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago will again extend its 60-day limit on shelter stays for asylum seekers, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced, just days ahead of a deadline that could have evicted nearly 2,000 migrants. Chicago and other U.S. cities, including New York and Denver, have put shelter limits in place as they struggle to house and care for the growing population of migrants arriving by bus and plane. Extensions will be based on migrants' original dates to exit the system and will be either 30 or 60 days, city officials said.
