U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) arrives at the U.S. Capitol ahead of an expected vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on a bill raising the federal government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, in Washington, May 31, 2023. "There's no reason for a government shutdown," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday at a briefing. WASHINGTON — Concerns over a potential government shutdown have reached a fever pitch as the House of Representatives returns to session this week with little progress to show on budget negotiations. Freedom Caucus Republicans have said they oppose even passing the continuing resolution without concessions on border funding and if it includes money for Ukraine. The speaker warned his caucus that a government shutdown would have negative effects on the impeachment process as well.

[1/2] U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) calls for an impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Joe Biden while delivering a statement on allegations surrounding President Biden and his son Hunter Biden, on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., September 12, 2023. Some lawmakers on the Republican right flank have said they would try to remove McCarthy as the leader of the House if he did not move ahead with an impeachment effort against Biden. "I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden," McCarthy told reporters. The White House has said there is no basis for an investigation and Biden has mocked Republicans over a possible impeachment. Any Biden impeachment effort would be unlikely to succeed.

WASHINGTON — After more than two years of demanding that the Justice Department appoint a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, Republicans in Congress finally got their wish on Friday. "If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn't get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel?" Republicans argued that a special counsel probe would effectively draw a curtain around evidence they are seeking. "Now, Merrick Garland expects us to trust Weiss to be the Special Counsel that finally brings Hunter Biden to justice," said Leavitt. "The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people."

Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) walks in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of President Joe Biden's first State of the Union Address in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, U.S, March 1, 2022. Sarahbeth Maney/Pool via REUTERSAug 9 (Reuters) - Democrat Congresswoman Maxine Waters said on Wednesday she was "deeply concerned" about payment giant PayPal (PYPL.O) launching its own stablecoin in the absence of a federal framework to regulate digital assets. Earlier this week, PayPal became the first major financial technology firm to embrace digital currencies for payments and transfers with the launch of a U.S. dollar stablecoin, dubbed PayPal USD. "Given PayPal's size and reach, Federal oversight and enforcement of its stablecoin operations is essential in order to guarantee consumer protections and alleviate financial stability concerns," Waters said in a statement. Similar attempts by other well-known non-crypto companies, including Meta Platforms (META.O), to launch a stablecoin have met fierce opposition from financial regulators and policymakers around the world.

"In 2024, the House will be won or lost in blue states," Congressional Leadership Fund president Dan Conston, wrote in the Aug, 7 memo addressed to "Interested Parties." This is the challenge facing House Republicans, wrote Conston. "These blue states exist in a vacuum outside of the competitive presidential and senate races ... meaning we must create our own infrastructure." All of those flipped New York seats are 2024 targets of the campaign arm for House Democrats, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The Democratic rival House Majority PAC has said they are investing $45 million in New York and $35 million in California.

WASHINGTON — A campaign to televise former President Donald Trump's federal criminal trials was launched late Thursday by congressional Democrats, led by California Rep. Adam Schiff. The letter was released within hours of Trump's arraignment in Washington, D.C., where the former president pleaded not guilty to four charges related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Thursday's court proceedings marked the third time this year that the former president has been hit with criminal charges, but his first time before a judge in the nation's capital. Trump has pleaded not guilty in the two other criminal cases.

How much do you need for a down payment on a house? On a $200,000 home, a 3% down payment means you'll need $6,000. FHA mortgage: 3.5%To get an FHA mortgage, you'll need at least a 3.5% down payment. It depends on what type of loan you're getting, but you may need between $9,000 and $60,000 for a down payment on a $300,000 house. A 20% down payment on a house allows you to avoid paying for private mortgage insurance, meaning you'll have a lower monthly mortgage payment and likely a lower mortgage rate as well.

U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks with reporters after a Republican conference meeting at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S. July 18, 2023. Republicans, who have recently intensified their investigations of Biden's family, claimed that Trump's latest indictment showed the United States lapsing into the condition of a "banana republic." House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Republican leaders have said that an impeachment inquiry is possible but have stopped short of announcing one. Republican hardliner Matt Gaetz took direct aim at Smith, tweeting that the special counsel "shouldn't be in any position to charge Trump with anything. Greene and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik have recently introduced measures to expunge both impeachments.

A pushback against climate policies is not just a U.S. issue. Reprisals over climate policies come at a time of record-breaking extreme heat across the globe, with July poised to be the hottest month in human history. Ruling party leader Jarosław Kaczyński described the bloc's green policies as "madness" and akin to "green communism." "At the moment, it looks like green parties are not doing going fantastically well. "The IRA is called an IRA, it is not called a climate act because there's no way that you could get Democrats and Republicans to agree on something called climate," Tocci said.

But many customers still witness challenges during and after checkout, including false declines and fraud. Below are four common checkout mistakes that enterprise e-commerce businesses make and how to avoid them. If those thresholds are too conservative, they can lead to false declines; if they're too liberal, they become more vulnerable to fraud. E-commerce merchants lost an estimated $11.1 billion in false declines last year. The machine learning models can distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent transactions to reduce false declines.

REUTERS/Alexandria Sage/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - California state air regulators and truck and engine manufacturers said on Thursday they had reached an agreement on state emissions rules that will give companies more flexibility to meet requirements. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said the "Clean Truck Partnership" with the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) includes new flexibility for manufacturers to meet emissions requirements while reaching state goals for reducing emissions. Newsom said "today truck manufacturers join our urgent efforts to slash air pollution, showing the rest of the country that we can both cut dangerous pollution and build the economy of the future." California said Thursday it agreed to modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations for which manufacturers will provide offsets to maintain California emission targets.

CNN —Bartolomé, a US military veteran, has spent the last 15 Fourth of July holidays in Mexico. “It’s a stab in the back.”Between 2013 and 2018, 250 US military veterans were placed in removal proceedings and 92 were deported. Unfortunately, an accurate count of deported veterans is nonexistent, because Immigration and Customs Enforcement does not keep a comprehensive record of removed US veterans. Veterans who did not receive a dishonorable discharge are entitled to a military burial in the United States. As a result, the urgency in addressing noncitizen military members’ precarious situation is particularly palpable now.

Trump, who faces multiple investigations and a federal indictment, is running for re-election in 2024. DeSantis has since reversed himself, assuring in recent months that Republicans are "not going to mess with Social Security." Tens of millions of U.S. seniors depend on Social Security and Medicare benefits, and that number is growing as the population ages. Strong majorities of U.S. adults across the political spectrum consistently say they oppose cutting Medicare and Social Security benefits. But many others, including party leaders, have bristled at accusations that the GOP wants to gut Social Security and Medicare. "Social Security, I would do the same thing," he added.

It would also authorize a 1% increase for security spending in fiscal year 2025.
