Leading Senate Democrats are teasing a new path forward to bypass one senator’s blockade of military promotions, leaning on GOP frustrations that bubbled to the surface this week and culminated in a dramatic confrontation from members of the senator’s own party. A group of Republican senators took to the Senate floor late Wednesday to attempt to circumvent a dispute in which Sen. BEIJING (AP) — A group of U.S. senators visiting Beijing expressed hope Tuesday that they had opened the door ever so slightly to government talks with China on its role in the fentanyl crisis ravaging America. The fact that Xi did not reject the senator's request outright could be hailed as progress reflects how low U.S.-China relations have fallen. The senators made trade and fentanyl their main focus in their meetings with Xi and other Chinese government officials. The U.S. ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, said the senators made more progress on the issue than he expected. Lawmakers return to Washington on Tuesday with just a handful of days to avert a government shutdown and a treacherous path forward to keep the government funded as landmines crop up on all sides. It’s an extremely precarious situation, with the consequence of a shutdown looming if lawmakers can’t fund the government by midnight Saturday. House leadership is aiming to move forward on the four full-year spending bills, which are chock-full of conservative policies and face no prospects in the Senate. Even so, whether that fail safe would come in time to avert a shutdown remains to be seen. The White House has asked Congress for roughly $40 billion in funding for Ukraine, domestic disaster relief and border security.

CNN —The Senate voted to confirm the nomination of Gen. C.Q. Brown to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following a monthslong hold of over more than 300 military promotions by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. On Thursday, the Senate will take votes to confirm the new Army chief of staff and the new Marine Corps commandant. Tuberville has refused to drop his holds, insisting instead that Schumer set up individual votes on each nominee. “The Senate runs on unanimous consent, and we depend on each other to ensure this institution functions smoothly,” Schumer said.
