NEW YORK (AP) — If another pandemic happens, the world will again be unprepared. That’s the bleak assessment of former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark, who co-chaired the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, after the U.N. General Assembly held a high-level summit aimed at heading off another pandemic. Other pandemic experts who tracked months of negotiations on the 13-page declaration adopted by the assembly’s 193 member nations were disappointed, too. “I think it’s fair to say that the declaration is a missed opportunity,” Clark said in an interview with The Associated Press on the sidelines of the General Assembly's high-level leaders' meeting. Clark also ticked off the catastrophic economic impacts of the pandemic: a $25 trillion loss to the global economy, and debt and default enveloping many developing countries.

CNN —Authorities discovered a trap floor containing drugs, including fentanyl, inside a Bronx day care center where a 1-year-old boy died of a suspected fentanyl overdose last week, the New York Police Department announced Thursday. The NYPD says a large quantity of fentanyl and other narcotics were discovered in a trap floor in the play area of the day care center. One-year-old Nicholas Dominici died after a suspected exposure to fentanyl last week at Divino Niño day care center. “More evidence has been recovered that leads to the conclusion that this was more than just a day care center,” Clark said Thursday. Carlisto Acevedo-Brito lived in a bedroom within the day care facility and is related to Mendez's husband.

NEW YORK (AP) — Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark won the 93rd AAU James E. Sullivan Award on Tuesday night as the nation's top collegiate or Olympic athlete. Voting by the public as well as the AAU Sullivan Award committee, AAU board of directors, sports media and past winners determined the winner. “It is an honor to be selected for this prestigious award that elects a student-athlete that excels on the court and off. It is special to represent the University of Iowa on this stage.”Clark was the consensus national player of the year in women’s basketball. Clark is the eighth basketball player to win the award.
