☆ Practicing gratitude could help you live longer, new study says

Now, a new study has found those who experience more gratitude also have a lower risk of dying. The researchers used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which included nearly 50,000 women between ages 69 and 96 who completed a six-item gratitude questionnaire in 2016. The researchers controlled for factors such as psychological well-being, health issues and other demographics including social and religious participation. There’s no clear consensus on how often one should practice gratitude, Simon-Thomas said. Having more gratitude has also been linked to being more optimistic in general, and people who express higher levels of gratitude tend to look more for the good in life, Watkins added.

Developers have built a lot of new small apartments over the last few years, and the boost in supply has driven rents down. Rents for newly finished one-bedroom apartments are also falling — the median rent fell 11.9% year over year in the first quarter of 2024, the report found. More than 90,000 new apartments came online in the fourth quarter of 2023, finishing a big year of apartment construction, Redfin noted. The Redfin report is based on US Census data on "unfurnished, unsubsidized, privately financed rental apartments in buildings with five or more units." Studios and one-bedrooms tend to be more profitable for developers to build than larger apartments, and developers aren't building enough apartments suitable for big families.

Consumer demand fears among CFOs have been rising in recent quarters, and match evidence from the market across sectors, with fast-food chains rushing out value menus and car dealers having more difficulty moving inventory. The 54% of CFOs who cited consumer demand as the biggest risk is up from 18% a year ago, and 37% last quarter. But the people driving the post-pandemic decline in hours worked fall into four categories: women, young adults, highly paid workers and employees at small businesses. Richardson points out that high earners can maintain their annual income while working fewer hours, thanks to big post-pandemic pay increases. Women are working more part-time jobs than menA record number of Americans — 22 million — are working part-time, Labor Department figures show.
