The cryptocurrency market plummeted in value on Sunday, as investors continued selling out of risky assets. Led by a drop of 11% in bitcoin in the past 24 hours and a 21% plunge in ether, the overall value of cryptocurrencies sank by about $270 billion, according to CoinGecko data. The selloff in the crypto market coincided with a broader slide in equities in Asia-Pacific markets. The latest crypto wipeout will be felt by a broader base of investors after the SEC this year approved new spot exchange-traded funds for bitcoin and ether. "For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said at this year's Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Kennedy went further than Trump, promising to establish a 4 million bitcoin strategic reserve to match the country's current stake in gold, some of which is held near the military base at Fort Knox. But Trump's reservation speaks to the complications of promising a bitcoin strategic reserve on par with the gold standard. An executive order would not be enough to bring a U.S. bitcoin reserve into existence. That existing bitcoin stockpile could act as the foundation for the bitcoin strategic reserve, which the U.S. government would build on by regularly buying a certain number of bitcoin.

It is also quite the about-face by the Republican presidential nominee. The Republican presidential nominee will also host an accompanying fundraiser in Nashville, with tickets topping out at $844,600 . Bitcoin 2024 conference organizers say they were briefly in talks to have Vice President Kamala Harris appear at the conference, though she ultimately declined. "I think we're going to hear from Vice President Harris soon on this. Harris' team has already begun to reach out to people close to crypto companies to set up meetings, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.

Opinion | Campaign Advice for Kamala Harris

To the Editor:Democrats’ weak spot has always been their reluctance to fight. Much of this country sees Donald Trump as their hero because they like his combative, vulgar style. What Kamala Harris must do now and throughout the campaign is to be aggressive — a bulldog, a street fighter with brains, the “go for the jugular” prosecutor. No mercy when it comes to showing this country what a lying criminal Mr. Trump is. MacKenzie AllenSanta Fe, N.M.To the Editor:I will excitedly support and vote for Kamala Harris if she becomes the Democratic nominee for president.

Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has raised more than $4 million from a mix of digital tokens, a campaign aide told CNBC. At least 19 donors contributed more than $2.15 million bitcoin to the committee, the filing shows. Brian Hughes, a Trump campaign aide, said that of the more than $4 million in crypto raised, most of it arrived in bitcoin. "While the Biden-Harris Administration stifles innovation with more regulation and higher taxes, President Trump is ready to encourage American leadership in this and other emerging technologies." Thus far, it appears the Trump campaign is mostly converting these contributions immediately to USDC and then liquidating the donations.
