I dislike getting involved in debates on the stock market when I am enjoying an old-fashion rum punch at a beach bar in the Caribbean, but I couldn't resist interjecting. "We'll see how the coming slowdown plays out," he said, and turned back to his discussion. The coming slowdown? More may be coming: the last week of November tends to be the strongest week of the month, Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, has noted. As for earnings, which are the lifeblood for the stock market, forward earnings estimates for the next 12 months stand at record highs.

Some experts think the combination of high housing costs, rising credit card debt and shrinking savings could mean the end of post-Covid splurges, maybe even as soon as this year’s holiday shopping season. Here are the pressures consumers are facing that could cause a spending slowdown. Keeping up with high prices not only has led to more credit card debt, but also more consumers are falling behind on the payments. Since the first quarter of 2022, the rate of newly serious delinquent credit card debt has risen roughly 90%. And that would mean Americans may be forced to finally pull back on their post-Covid spending spree.

Regular order refers to the process of legislative committees holding hearings and marking up bills before referring them to the legislature as a whole. "And that has sort of thrown out the window the whole idea of regular order." The move away from regular order was natural selection, this argument goes. AdvertisementThat assumes, however, that party leaders and the members that put them there would want to have a functioning government. The very incentives that pushed Congress away from regular order are stronger than ever.

CHICAGO (AP) — Northwestern rewarded coach David Braun for a remarkable turnaround following Pat Fitzgerald's firing in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal by removing the “interim” label from his job title on Wednesday. “I am truly honored for the opportunity to continue leading Northwestern’s football program,” Braun said in a statement. “He’s never wavered,” said quarterback Ben Bryant, who led Northwestern to the 24-10 win over the Badgers. “Under his guidance, Northwestern’s football team has exceeded expectations on the field and excelled in the classroom. Fitzgerald, by far Northwestern's winningest coach, is suing his alma mater for $130 million, saying it wrongfully fired him.

Democrats are finding ways to advance their candidates and causes in traditionally red states. Tuesday's elections show that while the party may never reach its former heights in increasing red states, it can still notch victories that continue to claw back power. Some states have long elected Democrats at the local level while rejecting Republicans at the national level and vice-versa. AdvertisementAdvertisementHere are some of the ways Democrats are still winning:Keep it local. Issue 1's proponents, like other previous red state movements, couched some of their appeals in broader language that would welcome Republicans.

On Tuesday, Virginia voters will decide who will control the state legislature, which is currently divided between Republicans and Democrats each controlling one chamber. Outlawing abortion at 15 weeks or earlier would mean residents of southern states seeking the procedure after this point would be funneled into clinics in states even further away. Bans or restrictions in all the southern states would also mean denying or restricting access to more than 110 million Americans, or one third of the entire country’s population, and seven of the 10 fastest-growing cities. CNN defines southern states here as the states that seceded during the Civil War, which while a popular definition is not how the US Census defines the South. Democrats, who previously controlled both the legislature and governorship, were left with a 22-17 majority in the State Senate.

Americans can’t get enough of Halloween candy. Halloween candy sales grew 14% between 2021 and 2022 and this year is on track to be the same. And in the world of chocolate, milk chocolate is king: more people bought milk chocolate last Halloween season than all other non-chocolate candy combined. But while per unit sales of chocolate candy have remained largely stable compared with five years ago, non-chocolate candy is the growth market. Americans bought roughly 7.8% more packages of non-chocolate candy last Halloween season compared to 2018, while package sales of chocolate shrank by 2.5%.

(AP) — Arkansas lawmakers on Thursday voted to audit the purchase of a $19,000 lectern for Gov. The Republican Party of Arkansas reimbursed the state for the purchase on Sept. 14, and Sanders’ office has called the use of a state credit card for the lectern an accounting error. Sanders’ office said it received the lectern in August. Sanders’ office has not said what features contributed to the lectern’s seemingly high cost. The lectern's purchase was uncovered by Matthew Campbell, a blogger and attorney who has sued Arkansas State Police and claimed the agency withheld documents about Sanders' security and travel.

CNN —As fighting intensifies across Gaza and Israel, CNN is visualizing the war through maps, charts and more. As airstrikes in Gaza have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes and overwhelm areas, including hospitals, there is little room to go. As thousands of rockets have rained down on Israel, the country has been relying once again on the Iron Dome system to protect its citizens. The US government has spent over $2.9 billion on the Iron Dome program since 2011, according to the Congressional Research Service. Here’s a snapshot of how planned US military aid to Israel compares with other countries.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders' office planned to use Republican Party funds to reimburse the state for a $19,000 lectern, which was bought in June using a government credit card. The undated reimbursement note adds to weeks of scrutiny over the purchase, which has dominated political talk in Arkansas. Mars has said he has a client willing to give a confidential statement to lawmakers who has firsthand knowledge that Sanders' office interfered with open records requests. Earlier emails about the purchase released Monday don't reference plans for the Arkansas Republican Party to reimburse the state. Sanders’ office has not said what features contributed to the lectern’s seemingly high cost.

CHICAGO (AP) — Former Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald is suing the school for $130 million, saying his alma mater wrongfully fired him in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal that has engulfed the athletic department. Attorney Webb said that Fitzgerald would also be seeking additional money for “infliction of emotional distress,” future lost income and punitive damages. The $130 million includes $68 million remaining in owed salary plus $62 million in future lost income, Webb added. “If there was ever a coach at Northwestern University who should have not been terminated, it’s Coach Fitzgerald," Webb said. Baseball coach Jim Foster was fired July 13 amid allegations of a toxic culture that included bullying and abusive behavior.
