CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied with three votes each in the tiny New Hampshire township of Dixville Notch, kicking off Election Day in one of the first places in the country to report its presidential preference. By tradition, all eligible voters gather at the now-dormant Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their secret ballots once polls open at midnight. Once every ballot is cast, votes are tallied and results announced – hours before anywhere else, making it a destination for national reporters, who often outnumber the voters. In January, four registered Republican voters and two independents participated in the GOP primary, casting six unanimous votes for former South Carolina Gov. CCDH’s research is based on an analysis of publicly available data from X about Musk’s own posts and spending by political campaigns to promote ads on the platform. The nonprofit tallied up how many views Musk received on 87 specific posts that contained false claims about the 2024 election that were debunked by fact-checkers. The 2024 election is the first presidential cycle with the platform under Musk’s control since his takeover of the company formerly known as Twitter two years ago. Based on that information, Ahmed’s group determined that Musk’s election-related posts – boosting Trump and slamming Vice President Kamala Harris – were worth about $24 million.

While overall pre-election voting is down, in some states more voters chose to vote in person early than they did in 2020. Orlando, Florida, police released the identities of the two men killed in a Halloween shooting in downtown Orlando last week. Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire shortly after 1 a.m. during a Halloween celebration, police said. At a news conference Friday, Police Chief Eric Smith said Halloween is one of Orlando’s busiest nights of the year, with crowds of 50,000 to 100,000. About 100 police officers were patrolling the area and tackled the shooter soon after the shots were fired, Smith said. Starting next week, Starbucks will stop charging coffee-drinkers who wish to customize their drinks with non-dairy milk options an extra fee, the company announced Wednesday. Starbucks said dropping the extra charge will make "it easier for customers to make their Starbucks beverage their own" by customizing popular drink recipes with non-dairy milk options, including soymilk, oatmilk, almondmilk or coconutmilk, according to the release. By removing the extra charge for non-dairy milks we're embracing all the ways our customers enjoy their Starbucks," Brian Niccol, Starbucks chairman and CEO, said in the release. Substituting a non-dairy milk is the second-most requested customization from customers, according to Starbucks.

Partisans from both sides routinely cite early voting data to promote their candidates and express optimism or try to juice turnout based on supposedly weak numbers. Like many political observers, including at CNN, Musk has noticed the better-than-2020 GOP performance in early voting in North Carolina, Nevada and other key states. Registered Republicans make up about 32% of the early vote in Pennsylvania so far, up from 21% at this point in 2020. The improved GOP position in early voting that Musk highlighted is happening in other states as well. Not all registered Republicans will vote for Trump, and not all registered Democrats will back Harris.
