"She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. Anna Sebastian Perayil died in July, four months after joining the Pune office of Ernst & Young, one of the “Big Four” accounting firms. In a LinkedIn post on Thursday, Ernst & Young India chairman Rajiv Memani acknowledged Augustine’s letter and said he was “deeply saddened” by what had happened. “This is a systemic issue that goes beyond individual managers or teams,” Augustine wrote. So for many on social media, Perayil’s death was also an indictment of the broader work culture in India, where young job seekers face fierce competition. “Like many in her position, she did not have the experience or the agency to draw boundaries or push back against unreasonable demands,” Augustine wrote.

But that has not stopped Trump from recycling some of the same dark portents about a Kamala Harris presidency. Even God was not safe from a Biden presidency, Trump warned. You’re going to have to learn to speak Chinese,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in August 2020. "She wants no Merry Christmas," Trump said. The suburbs are also doomed if Harris wins, Trump told rallygoers last week in Tucson, Arizona, warning that Harris' team "wants to abolish the suburbs."

This is an age group that may be particularly vulnerable if they haven’t received a whooping cough booster since childhood. The state has logged 111 whooping cough cases this year so far, compared with just 11 in 2023. Last weekend, Portland State University canceled a football game following a surge in whooping cough cases among players. The whooping cough can spread that bacteria through their coughs for a long time if not treated. “Those babies are coughing so much they can’t eat, they can’t drink, so they end up in the intensive care unit.”When to get whooping cough vaccines and boostersPregnant women are encouraged to get a whooping cough booster during their third trimester.

The fight over Wisconsin — considered a must-win for Harris as part of Democrats’ so-called blue wall — could tilt the election. Tim Walz has re-energized staff members in the state, a campaign official told NBC News. With more than 200 staffers statewide, the Harris campaign touts 48 offices across Wisconsin, including some in smaller, more rural areas that Trump won in 2020. But the Trump campaign is mounting its own effort in the state. An RNC official also said the Trump campaign and the Wisconsin GOP have more than 70 staff members and 40 offices across the state.

“If we’re going to put up affordable housing, we don’t just want to house one family. We want to house five or six or eight or 25 families,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has overseen the Minneapolis 2040 plan. Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed the higher housing costs on the current administration’s policies, as well as an “unsustainable invasion of illegal aliens.” The campaign broadly said Trump’s housing plan involves freeing up federal land for housing and cutting regulations. Kenneth Hauck wasn’t sure how he would vote when the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris was just a hypothetical scenario. Now it’s a reality, and Hauck still isn’t sure whom he will support — but he’s leaning toward Harris. Of the 21 previously undecided voters who recently spoke with NBC News, the largest group included nine voters like Hauck who said that they are still undecided but that they are concerned about Trump and are leaning toward picking Harris. Four more are definitely supporting Harris, while one is backing Trump, and three are leaning toward him. Pagers, devices that are used every day as a crucial form of communication for health care professionals, became a deadly weapon Tuesday as thousands of them simultaneously exploded in Lebanon, killing 37 people and injuring thousands. The explosions targeted the militant and political group Hezbollah, after the devices had reportedly begun beeping and heating up. Pagers are wireless communication devices that receive radio signals from short- or long-range paging networks. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon were made to appear as if they were Gold Apollo’s AR-924 pagers, but The New York Times reported that they were actually created by Israeli intelligence workers. Following the explosions on Tuesday, Hezbollah told Al Jazeera that the “treacherous and criminal enemy will certainly be punished for this aggressive act.”How did the pagers explode?

Chu pleaded guilty to having seditiously worn a T-shirt with the protest slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.”The slogan was chanted on the streets during the months of pro-democracy demonstrations that rocked Hong Kong in 2019. Chu told police the “Liberate Hong Kong” slogan called for the return of Hong Kong to British rule and that he wore the shirt to remind people of the protests, the court heard. Chung pleaded guilty on Thursday to three counts of seditious acts for writing slogans advocating Hong Kong independence and “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” on the back of bus seats in March and April. Beijing imposed a national security law in 2020 to quash the months-long protests in the financial hub. In March 2024, Hong Kong passed a second new security law.

He bemoaned that, despite those milestones, which he framed as being on behalf of the Jewish people, he had not seen an increase in support from Jewish voters. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for further comment on the former president's remarks. At a separate event in the capital on Thursday evening, he shared a similar warning with Jewish voters about the stakes of their support in the election. As Trump continues to court Jewish voters ahead of the November general election, he has continued to publicly assail high-profile Jewish leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Pennsylvania Gov. Trump’s comments Thursday echo his years of frustration at Jewish voters’ lack of support for him (they historically lean Democratic, according to the Pew Research Center.)

That’s how much money one expert said the person who caught Ohtani’s historic 50-50 club home run baseball on Thursday could sell it for. “Just an incredible piece of history,” Dillon Kohler of SCP Auctions told NBC Local. The fan who ended up with the ball has not yet been publicly identified or announced an intention to sell. Only five players in MLB history have recorded 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, making the accomplishment unprecedented and the baseball lucrative. Kohler said auction is the recommended selling strategy for Ohtani’s home run ball, which he said should have been hologrammed by MLB for authentication purposes prior to his at-bat before it reached the hands of its new wealthy owner.

An initial DNA test on remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the suspect in the Interstate 75 shootings, was inconclusive, but an autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, state officials said. The soft tissue DNA test was “inconclusive due to extreme decomposition of the body,” and a further DNA test with material extracted from bone will be completed, the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said in a news release. The remains were found in deep brush by a highway exit in Laurel County, which is where London is and where the shootings occurred, state officials said. A couple livestreaming the search for Couch's body helped in the effort and the discovery, state police said. The DNA test from bone is expected to begin Friday and take 24 to 48 hours, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said.

LINCOLNVILLE, Maine — As Republicans in Nebraska consider changing state law to give Donald Trump an extra Electoral College vote this fall, their Democratic counterparts in Maine have little recourse to even the score. In 2020, Trump won one electoral vote from Maine’s rural 2nd Congressional District and is heavily favored to do so again, while Joe Biden won one from Nebraska’s Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District. And Maine GOP leaders have already signaled they have no interest in helping Democrats do away with their unusual formula for awarding electoral votes. “Maine has the gold standard of presidential election processes in the United States,” state House Minority Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham told the Bangor Daily News on Thursday. But unlike the previous times, there no longer appears to be a good way for Maine — and therefore national Democrats — to counter a change in Nebraska.

Packaged foods, soda, chips, hot dogs, chicken nuggets and ice cream all fall under the category of ultraprocessed foods, which can include dozens of synthetic additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial dyes. For every 10% increase in the amount of a person’s diet made up of ultraprocessed foods, the team found that there was a 17% increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the data showed. The scientists also found that reducing the amount of ultraprocessed food you are consuming can lower the risk, according to the study. “Ultra-processed foods are everywhere,” Dicken said via email. “We also know that increased body fat (from excess calories) increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

China's yuan rose to its strongest level in nearly 16 months on Friday on bets that Beijing will unveil fresh economic stimulus following a jumbo U.S. rate cut, though gains were capped by dollar buying from Chinese state banks. The onshore yuan strengthened to as much as 7.0420 per dollar, the firmest level since May 24, 2023, on track for a six-session rising streak. The Fed cut rates by a larger than usual 50-basis-points on Wednesday. On Friday, China's major state-owned banks were seen buying dollars in the onshore market to prevent the yuan from appreciating too fast. Prior to the market opening, the People's Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 7.0644 per dollar, its strongest in nearly 16 months.
