Journal Editorial Report: The electric-vehicle bubble starts to deflate. Image: Jae C. Hong/Associated PressIf step one of Bidenomics is funneling cash to green industries, step two is cleaning up the distortions created by its subsidies and mandates. That explains the President’s plan this week to spend billions to prop up union jobs in electric-car production that the government is forcing on auto makers.

Unlike prior union leaders, Fain is attempting to negotiate with all three automakers at once, refusing to select a "target" company to focus on while extending deals at the others. He's also been far more confrontational with the automakers compared to previous union leaders, at times launching personal attacks on executives. "I think there's a reasonable chance they strike Stellantis first and then give a couple more days for Ford and GM to give a better offer." The union could use that work stoppage as a warning to GM and Ford to finalize their deals, he said. Both GM and Stellantis denied the unfair labor charges. DETROIT — United Auto Workers has filed unfair labor practice charges against automakers General Motors and Stellantis to the National Labor Relations Board for not bargaining with the union in good faith or a timely manner, UAW President Shawn Fain said Thursday night. The union did not file a complaint against Ford Motor , as Fain said the company responded to the UAW's demands with a counterproposal he heavily criticized. "GM and Stellantis' willful refusal to bargain in good faith is not only insulting and counterproductive, it's also illegal," Fain said during a Facebook Live. "That's why today, our union filed unfair labor practice charges, or ULPs, against both GM and Stellantis with the National Labor Relations Board." Regarding Ford's recent proposal, Fain called it "concessionary."

The complaint accuses the automakers of not bargaining in good faith by not providing any response to the union’s economic demands at the bargaining table. Both GM and Stellantis, which makes vehicles under the Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler brands, deny the union’s charge that they are not bargaining in good faith. “We have been hyper-focused on negotiating directly and in good faith with the UAW and are making progress. It said it would pay workers far more than employees at the nonunion US auto plants operated by Tesla and foreign automakers. There are 145,000 UAW members at the nation’s three unionized automakers.

UAW President Shawn Fain has said all the three companies - Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis NV - need to conclude new contracts by a Sept. 14 deadline. Aug 27 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union at Ultium Cells, a joint venture of General Motors (GM.N) and LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) in Lordstown, Ohio, on Sunday said members voted in favor by 895 to 22 votes to ratify an interim agreement that immediately raises wages by $3 to $4 an hour. The interim wage increase will be retroactive to December 2022 and some workers will receive between $3,000 to $7,000, based on hours worked. The companies had said workers must still ratify the interim wage increase that takes effect Aug. 28. The UAW also said negotiations for a complete first contract will continue between the union’s elected bargaining committee and Ultium Cells. On Friday UAW workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if an agreement is not reached before the current four-year contract expires on Sept. 14.

Aug 25 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday voted in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if an agreement over a new contract is not reached before the current one expires on Sept. 14, UAW President Shawn Fain said. "Our members expectations are high because Big Three profits are so high," Fain said. Stagnant pay, high healthcare costs, less sick time and uncertain scheduling have pushed American union workers to rethink their priorities after pandemic to seek higher wages, and better work-life balance. Michigan-based Anderson Economic Group has estimated that a 10-day strike that shuts down the automakers could cost manufacturers, workers, suppliers and dealers more than $5 billion. Walkouts at the Detroit Three could benefit Tesla (TSLA.O) and other non-union automakers, including Toyota Motor (7203.T) Honda Motor (7267.T), Nissan Motor (7201.T) and Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Anderson said.

Aug 25 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday said members voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if agreement is not reached before the current four-year contract expires on Sept. 14. Fain reiterated that the union did not plan to extend the deadline to get a new labor contract. We have a lot of options that we are looking at but extension on the contract is not one of them." Fain said he expected the Detroit Three to come to the bargaining table next week with counter proposals to the UAW demands. Strike votes concluded Thursday among about 145,000 UAW members at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the company that sells vehicles under the Ram, Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler names. Even with a recent increase in strikes across the US, most labor negotiations conclude with an agreement and not a strike. Union President Shawn Fain and the UAW are talking up an ambitious set of goals in this year’s negotiations. The workers at those plants are not going to be employees of GM, Ford or Stellantis. And the plants either are paying or are expected to pay far less than UAW members make at the assembly, engine and transmission plants covered by these three contracts.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union reached a tentative deal Thursday to raise wages 25% at Ultium Cells, a company that makes batteries for General Motors’ electric vehicles. The agreement announced Thursday is significant since the Ultium plant is the first US EV battery plant to be represented by a union. The joint statement from the company and the union did not say what the workers are currently paid. Even with the raise, Ultium Cells’ workers will still earn far less than UAW members at unionized auto plants currently making up to $32.32 an hour. Union members at the plant are expected to decide whether or not to ratify the deal on Sunday.

General Motors revealed its all-new modular platform and battery system, Ultium, on March 4, 2020 at its Tech Center campus in Warren, Michigan. DETROIT — General Motors' Ultium Cells has agreed to increase worker pay at its battery plant in Ohio by an average of 25%, the company and United Auto Workers union said Thursday. The deal is a major win for the union, as it's the first major organized battery plant in the country. The union previously argued the battery workers should make the same wages as their traditional counterparts assembling engines and cars. Ultium workers currently make between roughly $20 and $25 an hour for production workers and $25 to $34.60 an hour for maintenance employees.

It also could throw a wrench into the upcoming holiday shopping season that is a make-or-break period for retailers, including Amazon.com (AMZN.O), the largest UPS customer. If approved, the deal would raise pay for 340,000 UPS workers and eliminate a two-tier wage system for drivers. UPS cut its full-year revenue and profitability targets earlier this month, citing higher-than-expected labor costs and business lost during the tumultuous contract talks with the Teamsters. Under the contract deal, current full- and part-time workers will get $2.75 more per hour in 2023, and $7.50 more per hour over the length of the contract, according to the Teamsters. General wage increases for part-time workers will be double the amount obtained in the previous UPS Teamsters contract - and existing part-time workers will receive a 48% average total wage bump, addressing a key sticking point in talks, the union said.

WARREN, Mich. – Automaker Stellantis has threatened to move production of the current Ram 1500 pickup truck from a factory in suburban Detroit to Mexico, a union leader said Sunday. United Auto Workers Vice President Rich Boyer, who heads the union's Stellantis unit, said the automaker has discussed the move during ongoing contract negotiations that are occurring simultaneously but separately between the UAW and General Motors, Stellantis and Ford Motor . Boyer said the company's plans would include producing a new all-electric Ram pickup truck at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, which currently produces most of the Ram light-duty pickups. "He don't give a s*** about the American auto worker," Boyer said wearing a red UAW shirt with "UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL." AEG estimates the total economic loss by calculating potential losses to UAW workers, the manufacturers and to the auto industry more broadly if the sides cannot reach tentative agreements before the current contracts expire. $825 millionThe UAW has more than $825 million in its strike fund, which it uses to pay eligible members who are on strike. The strike pay is $500 per week for each member – up from $275 in 2022. Assuming 150,000 or so eligible workers, that's all-in weekly strike pay of about $75 million. The UAW is scheduled to hold a procedural strike authorization vote next week, which would grant union leaders the ability to strike, if warranted.

The UAW president has rattled automakers with combative rhetoric, delivered via Facebook Live videos, including one where he threw contract proposals from Stellantis into a trash can. U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday urged the automakers and the union to come to a "fair agreement." The three automakers have signaled such a move would add billions in liabilities and make their unionized U.S. operations uncompetitive. Fain said the union's analysis concluded that the automakers could fund defined-benefit plans for roughly the same cost as current 401(k) savings plans.
