Hollie Adams | Afp | Getty ImagesBritain's Labour government appears poised to raise "sin taxes" in its highly anticipated October budget as it seeks to cash-in on lucrative industries to bolster Treasury revenues. Among a litany of measures, including a major change to the government's fiscal rules, Reeves is reported to be considering a sin tax raid. "Sin stocks are a good place to start. Shares of London-listed gambling stocks fell sharply on the news. A Treasury spokesperson was not immediately available to comment when contacted by CNBC about the prospect of sin taxes in the budget.

It’s a crucial trend that undercuts one of the biggest arguments Republicans have used to hammer Democrats over the cost of living. Although gas prices are down and the rate of inflation has cooled sharply, consumers are still hurting from years of price hikes. After Russia invaded Ukraine, oil prices skyrocketed due to fears of massive supply disruptions. Drivers rolling up to gas stations in some battleground states are enjoying significant price drops, including Nevada (79 cents cheaper than a year ago), Arizona (78 cents cheaper), Pennsylvania (36 cents cheaper) and Wisconsin (32 cents cheaper). But for now the markets appear to be bracing for muted prices, a situation that should keep a lid on gas prices.

China launches new lending tool before year-end loan expiry

A man looks at his smartphone as he walks past the People's Bank of China building on May 20, 2022 in Beijing. Despite taking effect on Monday, the PBOC did not mention the new tool in its open market operations statement. China's central bank launched a new lending tool on Monday to inject more liquidity into the market and support credit flow in the banking system ahead of the expiration of trillions of yuan in loans at the end of the year. Beijing is counting on massive financial stimulus announced in September to kick-start lending and investment, as a sharp property market downturn and frail consumer confidence weigh on investor confidence. "The central bank's choice to launch this new tool at this time is also expected to be a better hedge against the concentrated expiry of medium-term lending facility before the end of the year," the article added.

The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that gross domestic product grew at a hardy 3.1% annualized pace in the third quarter, adjusted for seasonality and inflation, according to the Dow Jones consensus forecast. Along with that, the release is expected to show that inflation moved closer or perhaps even below the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The Fed uses the personal consumption expenditures price index, included in the GDP estimate, as its primary inflation gauge. The report, then, should indicate a solid economy and easing inflation , the latter at least on a relative basis from how things looked a year ago. "Overall, another quarter of above-trend growth and a benign inflation reading will be welcomed by the Fed."

Overall S & P 500 profit growth is tracking below what analysts anticipated heading into the reporting period. Still, the S & P 500 is less than 1% below a record high reached earlier this month. Solita Marcelli, UBS Global Wealth Management chief investment officer for the Americas, also warned that high valuations could be a problem for megacap tech stocks as earnings roll out. Technical patterns based on price charts aren't too favorable, either, heading into megacap tech earnings. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) in June hit its highest level relative to the S & P 500 since March 2000 , when the dot-com bubble peaked.

Bottom line The main part of our AMD thesis — fast-growing sales of its MI300 AI chips — is still on track, so we view the post-earnings pullback as a buying opportunity. Given how integral these AI chips are to AMD's growth, we were pleased management on Tuesday night raised its full-year sales projections to exceeding $5 billion. Another factor: AMD's chips passed some performance milestones with customers, Su said. We believe Su's AI roadmap — outlined at its AI event earlier this month — will lead to significant sales growth in 2025 and thereafter. Quarterly commentary Sales in AMD's all-important data-center segment came in $3.55 billion, exceeding estimates and more than doubling year over year.

Several analysts maintained their buy ratings ahead of the results and expect AI-driven gains to appear in its search and YouTube segments. Still, the consensus revenue estimate implies Alphabet could post its slowest year-over-year growth since the third quarter of 2023 . Analysts polled by LSEG expect Alphabet to earn $1.85 per share on $86.3 billion in revenue, implying year-over-year earnings and revenue growth of 19.1% and 12.5%, respectively. Israel's parliament voted Monday to ban the operations of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, the main humanitarian aid agency operating in Gaza. "This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees," Lazzarini wrote. UNRWA is a U.N. aid organization established in 1949 to provide aid and protection to Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Some Israeli critics have said that the agency perpetuates a false narrative that Palestinians are refugees, which Lazzarini referenced in his statement. And U.N.
