He ordered up an economic analysis and spoke to company officials about the plant, according to White House officials. On Thursday, Biden will visit Belvidere to showcase that same auto plant, which has reopened as part of the settlement of a targeted strike by the United Auto Workers union. O'Malley Dillon said the UAW contracts and the auto plant reopening reflect a larger focus on workers by the president. The contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members in the coming weeks, would dramatically raise pay for auto workers. Top assembly plant workers would earn roughly $42 per hour.

Contagion from spiking yields quickly trickled into real estate, lifting the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate above 8%. "Even before mortgage rates went up to 8%, we saw significant slowing in home sales activity, and some recent reports pointed to a 12-to-13-year low." But where mortgage rates will be depends on the fed funds rate. Following this trend, CoreLogic indicators forecast that mortgage rates could be at about 6.3% by year-end. Forecasts are based on multiple metrics including home prices, the unemployment rate, real disposable income per capita, and population growth.

Rivian raised its production forecast for 2023 on Tuesday, Photo: Bing Guan/Bloomberg NewsRivian is on a better road than Lucid , but none of America’s electric-vehicle startups looks much like being the next Tesla . Rivian is finding its cruising speed—slower but more controllable than the breakneck expansion envisaged in its initial public offering two years ago. The company, which is focused on electrifying pickup trucks, three-row sport-utility vehicles and delivery vans, raised its production forecast for 2023 to 54,000 on Tuesday, when it reported third-quarter results after the market close. This was the second consecutive quarter that it has raised this closely watched number after drastically cutting expectations just months after its IPO. The stock was up about 7% in premarket trading on Wednesday.

They arrested 29-year-old Shaquille Taylor after surveillance video and witness statements pointed to him as the shooter. The investigation showed Taylor was shooting at a car while Ludwig was walking in a park on the opposite side of the street, according to police. Taylor is charged with aggravated assault and evidence tampering, and was being held on a $280,000 bond. Taylor has been charged criminally several times in the past including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Earlier this year, a Nashville judge dismissed those charges, and Taylor was released after three court-appointed doctors testified that he was incompetent to stand trial.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday will meet in Belvidere, Illinois, with the head of the United Auto Workers union, and the two leaders are expected to highlight plans to reopen an auto factory that Stellantis wanted to close. The White House announced in a statement Tuesday afternoon that during the visit, Biden will deliver remarks and meet with UAW members and the union's president, Shawn Fain. The contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members in the coming weeks, would dramatically raise pay for auto workers. J.B. Pritzker will also attend Thursday's meeting, the White House said. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Four large pickup trucks fared poorly in tests measuring how rear seat passengers fare in some crashes, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Tuesday. "Like most other vehicle classes, large pickups don't perform as well in the new moderate overlap evaluation as they do in the updated side test," said IIHS President David Harkey. IIHS said front seat safety has been boosted by improved airbags and advanced seat belts typically not available in the rear. The updated test uses a heavier barrier traveling at a higher speed to simulate the striking vehicle. In traffic crashes in 2021, 60% of pickup drivers who were killed were unrestrained - higher than other categories of vehicles.

Surging olive oil prices, driven in part by two years of drought in Spain, has meant opportunity for criminals across the Mediterranean. Warehouse break-ins, dilution of premium oil with inferior product, and falsification of shipping data are on the rise in olive-growing heartlands of Greece, Spain and Italy. Bekas, who owns 5,000 olive trees, suffered repeated raids by thieves before deciding to take an early harvest. After decades of growth, the global olive oil market has been disrupted by a nearly two-year drought in Spain, which typically accounts for about 40% of world supply. The regional agricultural association issued a plea for police assistance following reports that 100 olive trees were destroyed or seriously damaged in a single incident last month.

CNN —Stellantis’ new Ramcharger pickup, expected to go on sale late next year, will be an “electric” truck, the company says. It will be sold alongside the Ram REV, the company’s actual fully-electric truck, expected to go on sale around the same time. Tim Kuniskis, the head of Stellantis’ Ram truck brand, insisted during a press conference that the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is not a plug-in hybrid. Also, the Ram truck can use DC fast chargers to quickly recharge its batteries. Ram previously unveiled an electric-only truck, the Ram REV, which will also go on sale late next year.

The results show how Australia's retail banks are leaning into businesses outside their traditional earnings engine of mortgages as higher interest rates raise the cost of repayments, spurring competition which has flattened profit margins. Sydney-listed Westpac said profit from its consumer division, which has just over one-fifth of Australian mortgages, shrank 7% in its full-year to end-September. Westpac gave no profit forecasts but said April-to-September trading was "more challenging" than the previous six months and "this is expected to continue into 2024". "If that does eventuate, interest rates will probably need to be higher than what we're thinking," he said on a call with analysts and media. Westpac declared a final dividend of 72 Australian cents per share, up from 64 Australian cents a year earlier.

Ford envisions at least three new electric vehicles that will preserve jobs at several factories. Those and other closely held production plans by Detroit's automakers have emerged in details of the tentative contract agreements that ended the six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The UAW's success in gaining commitments from the companies to build new electric vehicles at several factories represented a particular achievement. The automakers have all embraced the transition to electric vehicles as a large-scale and long-term commitment. And not all the companies’ production plans under the contract, of course, involve electric vehicles.

New Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s transition plan called for “restricting right turns on red,” but his administration hasn’t provided specifics. The college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan, now prohibits right turns at red lights in the downtown area. The United States is one of few major countries that generally allow right turns on red. Critics argue that banning right on red will not only inconvenience motorists but also slow down commuter buses and deliveries. Melinda Kasraie testified on behalf of Lovick's bill at a legislative hearing, sharing her experience being struck by a car turning right on red in Seattle.

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota isn’t telling owners of 1.9 million recalled RAV4 SUVs to park them outdoors even though U.S. safety investigators have four complaints about engine fires that can start with the vehicles' ignitions turned off. In addition, the agency has eight reports of fires that started on the driver's side of the engine compartment where the battery is located. Four reports said “thermal events” happened with the ignition off, indicating that it may be wise for owners to park the SUVs outdoors until they can be repaired. But Toyota spokesman Aaron Fowles said the company is not advising people to park the RAV4s outdoors. Documents posted Friday by the safety agency say that Toyota has found 22 "field technical reports" in the U.S.

The big-box retailer's stock hit a peak of $166.30 earlier in the day. That marks the highest since Walmart first began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in August 1972. Shares of Walmart touched an all-time high Friday, as investors bet that the discounter will outmatch retail rivals and draw shoppers throughout the holiday season because of its reputation for value. That business has helped Walmart draw foot traffic, even as other retailers like Macy's and Target give cautious outlooks and see weaker results.
