Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio to be the next Speaker of the House. AdvertisementAdvertisementFormer President Donald Trump, early on Friday morning, endorsed Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio to be the next Speaker of the House, testing his ability to bring calm to Congress after a week of chaos. Trump's endorsement will likely upend the campaign to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was unceremoniously ousted earlier this week. Right now, the race is largely between Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. The House speaker election is days away after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster that has left the chamber in need of a successor. Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. House Republicans are set to hold their own candidate forum behind closed doors on Tuesday before holding an internal election and chamber-wide vote in the following days. “No candidate for Speaker is likely to receive 96 percent of the Republican Conference vote required by this new precedent,” Rep. Tom McClintock of California said in a statement. But the California Republican made clear after the vote to boot him from the role that he wouldn’t run for speaker again.

The issue has exposed deep divisions between his nationalist-religious supporters and more liberal and secular sections of Israeli society, posing major questions about the constitutional foundations of Israel and its future direction. Over 2,600 Israelis including Zwebner's brother were killed, the largest loss of life Israel has ever suffered in a single war. For many front-line soldiers, the war remains a traumatic event but the feeling many express five decades later is pride in having helped save their country. "I had a meeting with my friends this week which really made me emotional, but you feel very much like you saved the existence of Israel," Zwebner said. For Zwebner, who himself opposes the judicial overhaul, a lesson of the 1973 war was that people had to be prepared to think for themselves rather than blindly accepting what leaders of any kind said.

Trump endorsed Jim Jordan for speaker of the House — but it won't be enough to get him the job. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to succeed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is on, and Rep. Jim Jordan just scored what may be the best outside endorsement a Republican could get — former President Donald Trump. Since Trump endorsed the Ohio Republican on Thursday evening, several House conservatives have done just that. Just ask former Rep. Liz Cheney, or any of the other House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump and were primaried out of a job. Trump doesn't have as much sway on Capitol Hill as you thinkThis may come as a surprise, but Republicans on Capitol Hill — even those that support his 2024 candidacy — ignore Trump all the time.

Jordan, a 17-year House veteran from Ohio who chairs the Judiciary Committee, has done pretty well in the money game too. 4 in fundraising among House Republicans and raised more than $14 million, largely through small donors. By comparison, roughly one in 20 dollars taken in by Scalise' campaign fundraising came from donors giving $200 or less. A host of factors, besides fundraising capabilities, will help determine who becomes the next House speaker, and there still was time for candidates to emerge in addition to Jordan and Scalise. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi collected over $1 billion during her time in House Democratic leadership from 2002-2022, her office said last year.

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert made it clear Ukraine aid will hang over the House speaker race. "For the first time, we saw that Ukraine funding alone does not have a majority of the majority's support," Boebert told Steve Bannon on Friday on his "War Room" show. Boebert was pointing to a vote last week where $300 million to fund Ukraine passed thanks to House Democrats' massive support. The two current leading candidates for House speaker appear to be split on the subject. "We are not going to allow them to leverage our Southern border in Appropriations bills with more funding for Ukraine," Boebert said.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., conducts a news conference in the U.S. Capitol on border security, government funding, and other issues, on Friday, September 29, 2023. WASHINGTON — Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was ousted as House speaker this week, shot down reports that he was considering an early departure from Congress and said Friday that he won't be stepping down. His comments came shortly after two people familiar with the situation told NBC News said McCarthy was considering resigning. Asked whether he planned to remain a member of Congress, McCarthy said, "I'll look at that." Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., chairman of the Republican Study Committee, is also considering jumping into the race.

Trump, the front-runner of the GOP presidential primary, reportedly discussed sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines – including the number of warheads they routinely carry and how close they can get to Russian submarines without being detected – to an Australian businessman. Earlier this week, the House ousted Kevin McCarthy – a stunning scene put in motion by a handful of far-right, MAGA lawmakers and one that marked the first time in history that the maneuver has been used to successfully oust a House speaker. Trump himself considered filling the role of speaker after being nominated by Texas Rep. “I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress,” Trump told Fox News Digital on Thursday. Trump is still considering a Tuesday visit to the Capitol, timed to when the GOP conference is set to hold a forum for the Speaker candidates.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) speaks at a press conference as Rep. Steve Scalise looks on following a Republican caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol. The top Republicans vying to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the next speaker of the House of Representatives have backed out of a televised debate that was scheduled to air Monday on Fox News. "The Republican conference needs a family discussion." Many Republican caucus members were angry that the party's differences would be publicly aired on national television in a debate for would-be speakers, a third source told NBC. The GOP caucus is scheduled to hold a conference meeting at 6 p.m. Monday to discuss choosing a speaker.

The House is without a speaker, the person who, according to the Constitution, is required to be its leader. For as long as the House is trying to find a new speaker, it’s unable to do much of anything else. What happened to the last House speaker? Rep. Kevin McCarthy had been House speaker since January, when he won the gavel after 15 rounds of balloting. Apple once considered replacing Google as its default search engine in private browsing mode on its products in favor of DuckDuckGo, according to recently unsealed testimony by the rival search CEO. DuckDuckGo first got a response from Apple about its idea to become the default search engine in private browsing in 2016, Weinberg said. DuckDuckGo claims its search engine greatly reduces the amount of tracking that is still possible in other search engines, even while on private browsing mode. DuckDuckGo presented Apple executives with data about what Apple users expect from private browsing mode, which Weinberg said he'd thought "was pretty compelling." DuckDuckGO estimated its market share "would increase multiple times over" just by becoming the default in private browsing mode.

House Republicans are offering competing demands for whoever wants to be the next speaker. AP Photo/Carolyn KasterBefore this week, no House speaker had ever been removed by the so-called "motion to vacate." His successor and House Republicans as a whole must now determine its future. Republicans vote amongst themselves — likely next week — behind closed doors for who should be the next speaker. Traditionally, Republicans would then vote for this candidate in the public vote on the House floor.

Two candidates, GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio, have already launched campaigns. He’s not the first GOP speaker to think so. But in this political climate, any Republican speaker who has to rely on Democratic votes is critically weakened and probably can’t last long. But the only way a Republican speaker will be able to pass aide to Ukraine will be to do so with Democratic help. The lack of such flexibility has been a fatal flaw of GOP speakers for years.

The House calendar remained officially stuck on October 3 – Tuesday – the date when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted and left the chamber without adjourning. “The House of Representatives is effectively frozen,” Rep. Garret Graves, a Louisiana Republican, told reporters. As speaker pro tempore, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina can perform tasks like recessing the House, adjourning the chamber and recognizing speaker nominations, according to the House Practices Guide. “Until we figure out how we have another speaker of the House, everything stops,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong, a North Dakota Republican on the House Oversight Committee, told CNN. While House Republicans intend to hold a candidate forum for would-be speakers on Tuesday, it could take time for Republicans to unify behind a single one.

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The race to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took shape on Wednesday as Steve Scalise, the chamber's No. 2 Republican, and Jim Jordan, a leading antagonist of Democratic President Joe Biden, said they would seek the post.
