President Joe Biden is giving automakers more time to ramp up sales of electric vehicles, following pressure from the industry and labor unions concerned about a rapid transition to EVs. Cars are the single-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Still, the United Auto Workers worries that a rapid shift to EVs will cost jobs because EV manufacturing requires fewer assembly parts. Pacing EV adoptionThe tailpipe rules land as the EV market hits some bumps in the road. AdvertisementStill, analysts predict that EV sales will continue to push higher, thanks to newer models at more affordable prices and the continued build-out of charging stations.

The original Biden administration proposal would have lowered such "petroleum-equivalent fuel economy" ratings for EVs by 72% in 2027. The industry cheered the Energy Department announcement. Automakers, auto dealers and the UAW called the original EPA plan unrealistic. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Sierra Club had urged EV mileage rating reductions after the Energy Department left them unchanged for two decades. "The automakers' free ride is over," he said, adding that changes "will curtail automakers' use of phantom credits they used to keep selling gas-guzzlers."

Washington DC CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Monday it has opened an investigation into a recent Ford Mustang Mach-E fatal crash in San Antonio, Texas, where authorities suspect an advanced driver assistance system was in use. Driver assistance features are being hailed by automakers as a way to reduce accidents, but federal safety regulators are concerned that over-reliance on the features by drivers could be causing some accidents. While NHTSA has opened more than three dozen Tesla special crash investigations since 2016 where advanced driver assistance systems such as Autopilot were suspected of being used with 20 crash deaths reported, this is NHTSA’s first special crash probe involving a Ford advanced system. NHTSA typically opens more than 100 special crash investigations annually into emerging technologies and other potential auto safety issues. In addition to the NHTSA probe, on Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board opened a separate investigation into the Feb. 24 crash.

Please note, that Abbott Laboratories is not listed below as we did not own the name before the company's earnings release. Meta Platforms had one of the best earnings reports of the entire season, as sales, earnings, and cash flow trounced expectations. Despite missing earnings expectations, Coterra Energy delivered where it matters most: discretionary and free cash flow. Honeywell 's earnings results weren't great, with sales missing across the board and segment profit results coming up mixed. Given the stock's reaction, one might wonder why we don't think the earnings results from Palo Alto Networks were flat-out ugly.

Ten nonprofits serving young people in Detroit will get an unusual, lasting gift as part of a campaign started by Lisa Ford and her husband, Bill Ford, the executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. Endowments are funds a nonprofit can invest and the annual financial returns from those investments can go into the nonprofit’s budget. Detroit-area nonprofits may apply in June, when Michigan Central Station will reopen, and ten selected organizations will each receive $500,000 to launch an endowment. The Children's Foundation will manage the nonprofits’ endowments and offer them guidance and technical support over two years. Lisa Ford said the idea for creating endowments for youth nonprofits evolved out of their commitment to supporting a robust and vibrant future for the city and the automotive industry.

CNN —Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a fatal crash involving a Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with advanced driving assistance technology. Ford shows off the new model 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT during the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place convention center in Chicago, Illinois on February 8, 2024. Federal investigators are looking at dozens of crashes involving so-called advanced driver assistance, or ADAS, systems. ADAS systems handle basic driving tasks such as keeping the vehicle in its lane while maintaining a safe distance behind vehicles ahead, usually in highway driving only. Fourteen of these systems, including two from Ford, were recently rated by the private Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Hertz CEO out following electric car ‘horror show’

New York CNN —Trouble and turmoil continue at rental car company Hertz. But the problem for Hertz wasn’t necessarily that the cars were electric, and customers simply do not want to drive electric cars. There might not be a charging station, or enough time, for a rental car customer to charge an EV, Ives said. These cases sometimes resulted in Hertz customers being arrested and even imprisoned. Scherr wasn’t the one who decided to make the big bet on EV demand by rental car customers.

The union has come close to representing workers at the VW plant in two previous elections. Some prominent Tennessee Republican politicians had urged workers to vote against the union during both campaigns. The year after the 2014 vote failed, 160 Chattanooga maintenance workers won a vote to form a smaller union, but Volkswagen refused to bargain. In November, VW gave workers an 11% pay raise at the plant, but the union says VW's pay still lags behind Detroit automakers. Top assembly plant workers in Chattanooga make $32.40 per hour, VW said.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is seeking a union representation vote among more than 4,000 hourly workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The union has announced a broad-based campaign to win representation at the American plants of 13 nonunion automakers. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. The VW Chattanooga plant is the only factory operated by VW that does not have union representation. Once the election process starts, management often holds mandatory meetings with staff to make the case against union representation, and that convinces some earlier supporters of the union to end their support.

Volkswagen employees in Tennessee who are hoping to join the United Automobile Workers asked a federal agency on Monday to hold an election, a key step toward the union’s longtime goal of organizing nonunion factories across the South. With the union’s backing, Volkswagen workers filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a vote on U.A.W. representation, saying that more than 70 percent of the 4,000 eligible workers at the plant had signed cards supporting the union. “Today, we are one step closer to making a good job at Volkswagen into a great career,” Isaac Meadows, an assembly worker at the plant, said in a statement. If held, an election would be the first test of the U.A.W.’s newfound strength after staging a wave of strikes in the fall against the three Detroit automakers — General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis — and winning record wage increases.

The hikes also sweeten the potential total return for their stocks at a time when some Wall Street strategists are shining a light on that performance metric. That performance metric captures not just stock price moves but also gains from reinvested dividends. The difference between stock price performance and total return can be substantial, underscoring the benefits of reinvesting dividends. The Tesla Inc. logo is captured on a sign of one of its shops in Zurich on Nov. 13, 2023. Tesla and the employee, Kyle Kaszuba, must pay more than $42 million in damages to the victim, Christopher Dugan, a Marion County jury said in a Wednesday verdict. The jury found that Dugan was 30% liable for the crash, reducing the award from $60 million to $42 million. The crash occurred while Kaszuba was operating a 2014 Ford vehicle owned by Tesla either with the permission of Tesla or while working in his capacity as a Tesla employee, Dugan alleged in his initial complaint. The gas station near where the crash occurred is located just outside of a ramp to I-465, the ring road that encircles Indianapolis.
