The anti-obesity drug market is expected to remain in focus this year after a bumper 2023 for weight loss drugmakers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly , according to Berenberg. GLP-1 drugs encourage the production of hormones that cause weight loss through reduced appetite. Nevertheless, Berenberg's analysts believe the bigger, underappreciated, near-term opportunity lies with companies preparing to launch generic versions of the first-generation GLP-1 drugs. Under-the-radar picks Sartorius and SKAN Group, Berenberg's "under-the-radar" pick, are also expected to benefit from manufacturing generic GLP-1 drugs. The investment bank sees Sartorius benefiting from the growing commercialization of GLP-1 drugs and forecasts shares to rise by 27% over the next 12 months.

Jose Lazaro Cruz was arrested in Costa Rica in 2022 and brought back to Fairfax County, Virginia, earlier this month to face trial in the 32-year-old murder case, police said. CNN reached out to the Commonwealth Attorney for Fairfax County and the Fairfax County Public Defender Office for information about his legal representation. Lazaro Cruz was Jurado’s then-estranged husband and was identified as the alleged killer by police, but he fled, according to Cory. Her 3-year-old and 7-month-old daughters lived with her in the US and her 4-year-old son lived in El Salvador at the time of her death. Lazaro Cruz remarried and had several children since the 1991 killing and “definitely started a whole new life in El Salvador,” according to Cory.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average set its first record close since January 2022 in December and ended Friday's session at a record high above 37,800. The Nasdaq, on the other hand, ended Friday at 15,310.97 — meaning it needs to rally about 5% more to take out its Nov. 19, 2021 record high. It is worth noting that the Nasdaq 100 , which is weighed more heavily in Big Tech, did close at another record high Friday. US President Joe Biden (L) meets with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on October 18, 2023, amid the ongoing battles between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. The families want the government to take bold steps to free the hostages, fearing that Israel's military activity in Gaza further endangers their lives. Health authorities in Hamas-ruled Gaza say Israel's offensive has killed nearly 25,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. As part of its search for the hostages, Israel's military dropped leaflets on Gaza's southernmost town of Rafah. Israel's military didn't immediately comment.

An Eli Lilly and Company pharmaceutical manufacturing plant is pictured in Branchburg, New Jersey, March 5, 2021. U.S. inspectors recently uncovered new manufacturing problems at an Eli Lilly plant that has been under scrutiny by federal investigators, according to government records obtained by Reuters. They included problems in tracking manufacturing process and quality controls, as well as lapses in its calibration of equipment and failure to properly maintain facilities and equipment, the inspection report shows. Yet the Indianapolis-based drugmaker has been cited multiple times for manufacturing problems at its U.S. plants over the last few years, Reuters has reported. Three regulatory experts who reviewed the new inspection report described the most recent lapses as serious.

Johnson has been under intense pressure from Republican hard-liners, who see the new speaker’s dealmaking with Democrats as anathema to their conservative agenda. And overriding their concerns to pass the short-term funding package with help from the majority of Democrats does little to help his case. Moreover, he argued, working with Democrats and brokering a deal – even if it’s not the one he wants – is necessary given their shrinking majority. Come Monday, their majority will shrink to 217 – the smallest Republican majority in the history of Congress – as Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio resigned to accept a job as a university president. “Here we are again, with House Democrats once again providing the votes to avert a costly shutdown.

Cramer lists his major themes for the market in 2024

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday reviewed what he thinks will be major themes on the market in 2024, including strength in the health-care sector due to weight loss drugs and success for mergers and acquisitions. With the major indexes declining on Wednesday, Cramer thought it would be helpful to tell investors what broader market themes they can reference on down days. And if you understand the themes behind them, you won't get shaken out by a bad tape—you'll use it to your advantage," Cramer said. He wondered whether other stocks would join the ranks of the "Magnificent Seven," but conceded that any contenders will be involved with artificial intelligence. "I'll have a lot more themes as the year goes on, because I'm not constrained by the calendar," he said.

MIAMI (AP) — Eight months after crossing the Rio Grande into the United States, a couple in their 20s sat in an immigration court in Miami with their three young children. About 261,000 cases of migrants placed in removal proceedings are pending in the Miami court — the largest docket in the country. Their average caseload is now 5,000 per judge, said Mimi Tsankov, president of the National Association of Immigration Judges. An example would be allowing most asylum cases to be solved administratively or through streamlined processes instead of litigated in courts. ___Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.

Ambassador Nikki Haley failed last month to mention slavery as the root cause of the Civil War. “Let me be clear, for those who don’t seem to know: Slavery was the cause of the Civil War,” he said. Chris Christie, who suspended his campaign on Wednesday, referenced the Civil War with a word of caution to Republican voters. The last time they were that relevant was the Civil War — which we know was caused by slavery,” Christie said. The intra-party jabs echo a broader debate over the legacy of the Civil War for policymaking today.

Reuters —A US appeals court said on Tuesday that Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza museum may keep a painting by the French impressionist Camille Pissarro that the Nazis looted from a Jewish woman, rejecting an ownership claim that her heirs have pursued for more than two decades. The 3-0 decision by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California, came in one of the oldest Nazi art theft cases, which began in 2005 and reached the US Supreme Court two years ago. After learning where the painting was, Neubauer’s grandson, Claude Cassirer, petitioned for its return in 2001, and sued four years later. A US court said Spain could keep a priceless painting looted by the Nazis from its Jewish owner. The Spanish-backed nonprofit didn't know the painting was looted when it bought the collection, the judges said, giving it a stronger claim within Spanish law. Apple and Nvidia are "own, don't trade" stocks, so should they be kept as they are, or shrink down? First, let's address our idea of "own, don't trade" stocks. To main a diversified portfolio, we don't want any of our positions, even Apple, to get much bigger than 5-6%. That doesn't mean we don't love the name or no longer view it as an "own, don't trade," it simply means that while it is an "own, don't trade" we also still abide by the view that discipline trumps conviction (diversification and not don't be greedy being the two disciplines of focus in this case) and that overrides the own, don't trade mantra. When we say "don't trade" these two names, we stay invested in both and don't try to catch the next 10% move up or down.
