New York/London CNN —Tupperware Brands Corporation, whose food containers have been a mainstay in American kitchens, has filed for bankruptcy. “Over the last several years, the company’s financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment,” Laurie Ann Goldman, Tupperware president and CEO, said in a statement late Tuesday. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through so-called direct sales, most commonly at “Tupperware parties,” similar to cosmetic company Avon’s business model, and only began selling in Target in 2022. Many businesses file for bankruptcy protection to wind down some operations, shed debt and cut costs. A common route, also chosen by Tupperware, is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems by restructuring.

Taiwanese pager manufacturer Gold Apollo rejected reports that it produced the devices at the center of deadly attacks in Lebanon that killed at least 12 people and injured nearly 3,000 others. Thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members around Lebanon simultaneously exploded on Tuesday evening, sending local emergency services into overdrive as hospitals filled up with wounded patients. Hezbollah called the act an "Israeli aggression"; Israel, meanwhile, has not commented on the blasts. Tens of thousands of people in both Lebanon and Israel have been evacuated from their homes. Hezbollah's leadership has previously said it does not seek a wider war, but would fight if provoked by Israel.

Georgia is rich in EV money and jobs

Since 2022, the Peach State has added over 30,000 clean energy jobs, more than any other state, according to a June study by Climate Power, a strategic communications firm. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated over $175 million toward the EV battery supply chain in Georgia and $135 million over five years toward infrastructure for EV charging stations in Georgia. Investments in EV and battery manufacturing will boost job growth and output in both of these sectors, Benson said. Strong population growth remains a tailwind for Georgia's economic growth and EV industry, Benson said. Between 2021 and 2022, there were 327,795 people who moved into Georgia, according to data from the Census Bureau.

Alaska Airlines completes acquisition of Hawaiian
  + stars: | 2024-09-18 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Alaska Airlines said on Wednesday it had completed its $1.9 billion acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines after reaching an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airlines on Tuesday agreed to maintain key Hawaiian routes and adopt consumer protections under an agreement that will last six years. The Justice Department in August chose not to block the deal that was announced in December by Alaska, the fifth-largest domestic U.S. airline, to merge with Hawaiian, the 10th-largest carrier. Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said in an interview that the deal would be good for competition and consumers and would expand access for consumers to both networks and give Alaska access to Hawaiian’s fleet of wide-body airplanes. Hawaiian Airlines’ stock will be de-listed and will cease trading on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, Alaska said in a statement.
