PARIS/TORONTO, June 18 (Reuters) - A year ahead of the Paris Olympics, flying taxi maker Volocopter wants to prove to executives at the Paris Airshow it is on track to ferry customers around the sporting showcase and take off globally. Success could boost the broader urban air mobility sector by persuading risk-averse investors that air taxis are worth putting money into, analysts and executives said. No flying taxi maker, whether Germany's Lilium or American player Joby, has received certification so far. Air mobility projects that went public through special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC) in recent years have lost at least 30% of their initial value. Venture capital is down across several industries, with a shift in spend from air taxis to drones, Riedel said.

The Joni Mitchell Renaissance

Last summer at the Newport Folk Festival, fans of the singer Brandi Carlile were treated to a shocking surprise: a guest appearance by Joni Mitchell, who had been barely seen in public since recovering from an aneurysm in 2015. The joyful performance went old-school viral — a cross-generational feel-good sensation. This month came the second wave of the comeback: a nearly three-hour Joni Jam at Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon festival in Washington, that featured Mitchell singing and playing electric guitar accompanied by acolytes: Annie Lennox, Allison Russell, Wendy and Lisa, Sarah McLachlan, and others. On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about how Mitchell was received during her career peak, the recent steps she’s taken toward public performance and how she is remaking her own music in her later years.

"The car didn't feel bad but I think we've definitely got some work to do," said Hamilton. "We've just got to improve our ride control and a bit of the balance through corners and I think we'll be alright. The upgrades in Monaco and Barcelona led to a double podium at the Spanish Grand Prix with Hamilton finishing second and Russell third behind race winner Verstappen. Even Allison could not bring himself to make any predictions beyond things finally are all pointing in the right direction. "Probably a little bit too soon to say that summer has arrived with that one swallow – but hopefully, we’ve turned a bit of a corner.

CNN —The official deployment ceremony for a South Carolina Army National Guard brigade that includes Michael Haley, the husband of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, is set to take place Saturday in Charleston. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at The Citadel military college ahead of the brigade’s deployment to Africa in support of the United States Africa Command. One person familiar with the details of the deployment told CNN that Michael Haley will likely remain deployed through the spring of 2024, which overlaps with much of the Republican primary nominating calendar. This will be his second active-duty deployment overseas – he previously served in Afghanistan as part of the South Carolina Army National Guard in 2013 when his wife was serving as the state’s governor. “We’re so proud,” the former governor said when asked how she and her family felt about Michael Haley going overseas for a year.

How to Stay Calm During a Bumpy Flight
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Christina Caron | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
On a recent flight to Chicago, Allison Levy said she was “white-knuckling” the armrest as the plane rumbled and shook for brief periods of time. Ms. Levy, 47, who lives in Arlington, Va., started to take deep breaths and tried to reassure herself: “It’s like a bumpy road — it’s not a big deal.”But, she added, “if I knew the person next to me, I’d definitely grip their thigh.”Airplane turbulence, which is usually caused by large changes in airflow in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, is generally a minor nuisance. But this year alone, there have been multiple instances of severe turbulence on flights that have led to dozens of passenger injuries. And scientists have warned that we may have bumpier flights in the years ahead because of elevated carbon dioxide emissions that are warming the atmosphere, which can alter the speed and direction of the wind.

New York CNN —Fox News on Wednesday acknowledged that an onscreen banner calling President Joe Biden a “wannabe dictator” was inappropriate and said it had taken steps to address the situation internally. “The chyron was taken down immediately and was addressed,” a Fox News spokesperson told CNN in a statement. “WANNABE DICTATOR SPEAKS AT THE WHITE HOUSE AFTER HAVING HIS POLITICAL RIVAL ARRESTED,” the onscreen text read. Biden and his White House have repeatedly stressed that he does not involve himself in Justice Department investigations and have said that the DOJ works independently of the White House’s influence. But Fox is fighting another defamation case from Smartmatic, another voting technology company, which is seeking a staggering $2.7 billion in damages.

United Air expects new pilot offer to add over $8 bln in costs
  + stars: | 2023-06-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Delta Air Lines' (DAL.N) landmark pilots contract in March, which offers $7 billion in higher pay and benefits, has put pressure on rival carriers to hand out similar deals ahead of a busy summer travel season. Earlier this month, the company's pilots union voted to authorize a strike vote - a bargaining tactic unions have been using in contract negotiations. However, Kirby did not reveal details included in the proposal, other than to say United would top the recent deals agreed to by its two biggest rivals. "We have disagreed with the company on the costing of items and they, in our opinion, have inflated many. Meanwhile, shares of United Airlines rose 3.5% in afternoon trade, benefiting from broader market gains.

What Wedding Night Sex?
  + stars: | 2023-06-09 | by ( Allison Hope | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Emily Lynen, 29, and Amber Lynen, 35, had every intention of having sex on their wedding night. After the two exchanged vows on Oct. 21, 2021, in Pasadena, Calif., the wedding party stayed out at a bar until late. “Honestly, the story of everyone ending up in our bed is a great story,” said Emily Lynen, a program manager. Across cultures, the wedding night has risen to such mythic expectations that even the term “wedding night” has become winkingly interchangeable with “sex." It can be a night shrouded in mystery — and sometimes disappointment, either owing to anticipation, anxiety or good old-fashioned exhaustion.

Apple at long last revealed its long-anticipated "next big thing" — its Vision Pro — two days ago at its annual WWDC. It represents the dawn of an entirely new mass market and transformational tech opportunity of so-called "spatial computing." Spatial computing is essentially the film "Minority Report" come to life, three-dimensional computing divorced from the confines of physical screens.

I promise there are some simple and immensely helpful ways in which LGBTQ people and allies can take action in June and every month. Don Arnold/Getty ImagesIf you don’t know where to begin with lobbying, look to an LGBTQ or civil rights group doing the hard work on the ground. Commit to learning and teaching: Even members and strong allies of the LGBTQ community can benefit from fresh learning. After all, the LGBTQ community is anything but a monolith — there are so many diverse forms of representation and a landscape that is quickly evolving. It’s also not a bad time to support brands that are supportive of the LGBTQ community.

A bit of background for the uninitiated:Men’s pro golf in North America has been dominated by the PGA Tour for decades. Last year, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund spent an estimated $2 billion to form a rival league, LIV Golf, to challenge PGA’s dominance. LIV attracted many of the sport’s top players away from the PGA Tour and Europe’s DP World Tour by offering more prize money. A long legal battle followed, and LIV golfers were banned from established tours. It is pronounced like “live.” As in, “Please don’t kill me, I want to live.”Oh, yeah — that brings me to the whole “why you should care” bit, and why many pro golfers and fans are apoplectic over the tie-up.
