Philippine Nobel laureate Maria Ressa plans to appeal her cyber libel conviction at the country’s Supreme Court, her lawyer said Tuesday, after losing her legal battle and having months added to her sentence. The appeals court in its October 10 decision upheld its earlier ruling that affirmed a lower court’s conviction, and added eight months to her six-year jail sentence. Biden also noted that the Philippines was among U.S. allies to quickly condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The “One China” policy recognizes Beijing as the government of China but allows informal relations and defense ties with Taiwan. He has said he wants to pursue closer ties with China, which has also sought to court him. He sees a rising China as the most threatening economic and national security adversary to the United States. The elder Marcos placed the Philippines under martial law in 1972, a year before his term was to expire.

PARIS/MADRID/BERLIN (Reuters) - European governments outlined new measures on Monday to cope with potential energy shortages this winter and raced to improve energy networks to share power, with Russian gas flows still running at severely reduced rates amid the Ukraine war. German buyers briefly reserved capacity on Monday to receive Russian gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, once one of Europe’s major gas supply routes, for the first time since the line was shut three weeks ago. European politicians say that is a pretext and accuse Moscow of using energy as a weapon. Russian gas flows to Europe via Ukraine, although much reduced, have nevertheless continued. ‘NEVER’While French energy group EDF is racing to repair corrosion-hit nuclear reactors, “exceptional” measures this winter could include localised electricity cuts if the winter is cold and EDF’s plans are delayed, Wargon said.

The scale of the Russian military’s and political leadership’s setbacks in Ukraine have become too vast for even state media and pro-war activists to ignore. With Russian forces on the retreat, more and more they are accusing the leadership of betraying the troops. As Ukraine retakes territory, videos are appearing online appearing to show massive amounts of equipment abandoned by retreating Russian soldiers. Radical right-wing bloggers calling for Putin to take the gloves off in Ukraine are not a direct threat to the regime, Stanovaya said. The Russian elite is used to seeing Putin as a strong man, someone who deals with challenges and always knows where he’s taking the country.

As The New York Times' Taylor Lorenz reported Sunday, the Biden administration signed on 50 Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok users to reach their massive follower counts, which largely consist of young users under the age of 30. Lorenz reported that state and local governments are also kicking off similar initiatives with more local online influencers, with some even providing $1,000-a-month incentives to encourage their thousands of followers to get vaccinated. That drive has included 18-year-old musician Olivia Rodrigo, who last month visited the White House in part to chat with chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci about vaccinations.
