The United States has quietly resumed deporting some Mexicans on flights that carry them far from the southern border, U.S. and Mexican officials said, a move designed in part to discourage them from repeatedly trying to cross into the United States. A senior Mexican official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the flights were expected to continue on a regular basis. Tuesday’s flight was the first of its kind in nearly two years. U.S. authorities more commonly deport Mexicans over land, near the border. But the number of Mexicans crossing into the United States has spiked in recent months, prompting U.S. authorities to find more forceful ways to discourage people from making the trip north.

More than 80 bottles of rare wine disappeared from the cellar of La Tour d’Argent, a renowned restaurant in Paris, according to a complaint filed last week that left investigators scrambling to find who was responsible. The stolen wine was worth an estimated 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million), the Paris prosecutor’s spokeswoman said in a statement. The third division of the Paris Judicial Police is overseeing the investigation. In 2011, robbers disabled security alarms and security cameras as they stole 400 cases of wine worth 1 million British pounds (about $1.6 million at the time) from a London warehouse. A decade later, the owners of a hotel and restaurant in Cáceres, Spain, reported that 45 bottles of wine worth 1.6 million euros (about $1.9 million in 2021) went missing from their cellar, including a bottle worth 350,000 euros (about $414,000 at the time).

(AP) — Eight corrections officers and an incarcerated man were injured in a riot involving around 200 inmates in the recreational yard of a Southern California prison, authorities said Thursday. The Jan. 31 riot at Ironwood State Prison in the Riverside County city of Blythe started when an estimated 200 prisoners rushed corrections officers, attacking them with fists and rocks. Eight prison staff members and one incarcerated person were hospitalized with injuries, and later released. The riot began around 10 a.m. when an incarcerated man head-butted a corrections officers who had detained him as part of a contraband investigation. The head butting — which occurred as staffers were escorting the man across a prison yard — prompted 200 inmates to attack the officers.

A slate of companies with a track record of beating Wall Street's expectations is teed up to report next week. Investors are anticipating results from a host of companies across different sectors next week, including media, chipmakers, pharmaceuticals and consumer products. Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro analyzed data from Bespoke Investment Group to find stocks with a history of beating their earnings expectations at least 75% of the time and subsequently rising an average of 1.5% or more after earnings were released. The company has historically beaten earnings expectations 76% of the time and has risen 1.66% afterward. Every dramatization of “The Wizard of Oz” seems to offer a pilgrimage to the Emerald City. But “El Otro Oz,” the inspired and imaginative interpretation now playing at Atlantic Stage 2, introduces additional journeys that are ultimately more poignant and profound. When I first saw this Latin-flavored retelling of L. Frank Baum’s tale two years ago, I was most impressed by its comic inventiveness. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's economy barely eked out a 0.1% increase in the fourth quarter, bringing estimated growth for 2023 to 3.1%, according to preliminary figures published Tuesday by Mexico’s National Statistics Institute. The institute said that services advanced 0.1% in the fourth quarter, agricultural output declined by the same amount and manufacturing remained unchanged. Inflation declined to 4.66% by the end of 2023, but domestic interest rates remained high at 11.5%. High rates at home and abroad increased the cost of servicing Mexico’s debt, the Treasury Department acknowledged. Mexico’s peso remained strong Tuesday at about 17.20 to $1 and the Mexican stock exchange’s main index was trading slightly higher.

Officials said the personal data of at least 263 journalists, whom they did not publicly identify, was illegally accessed and released. The leak exposes the journalists to potential identity theft and could compromise their physical security because the data includes home addresses. "The safety of our journalists is paramount, and we are deeply troubled by this leak of personal data. "What I'm most worried about is possible identity theft and that someone misuses my personal data to commit fraud," said Morales, designated as the paper's spokesman on the matter. Bullfighting has taken place in Mexico for centuries, but in recent years opposition to the practice has grown. In 2013, Sonora state became the first of Mexico’s 32 states to ban bullfighting, and a total of four states have now done so.
