A week after health authorities publicly linked a deadly E. coli outbreak to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers, the company's CEO, Chris Kempczinski, told investors that the situation is now behind them. On Sunday, McDonald's said Quarter Pounder burgers would return to the roughly 900 restaurants where the company had pulled the menu item following the outbreak. McDonald's has stopped sourcing onions from the supplier indefinitely and will return the Quarter Pounder to menus sans slivered onions. As of Friday, 75 health cases across 13 states have been tied to the outbreak, including one death of an older adult. At least three lawsuits have already been filed against McDonald's by victims of the outbreak.

Major equipment suppliers in Europe say that U.S. chip designers are calling on them to lower their water temperatures to accommodate the hotter AI chips, according to Herbert Radlinger, managing director at NDC-GARBE. Energy efficiency is high on the European Commission's agenda, as it seeks to reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030. The EU predicted in 2018 that energy consumption of data centers could rise 28% by 2030, but the advent of AI is expected to boost that number two or threefold in some countries. Many of the recent discussions have focused on different ways to source "prime power" for AI data centers and for the potential for more collaboration with utilities, said Steven Carlini, chief advocate of AI and data centers and vice president at Schneider Electric. Liquid cooling will require a "reconfiguration," Gunen explained, adding that new data centers are already coming ready with this technology.

New York CNN —Americans around the country avoided McDonald’s last week after an E. coli outbreak left dozens of people sick. On Wednesday, the day after the E. coli outbreak was announced, customer visits to McDonald’s dropped 6.4% across the country and 24% in Colorado, where the outbreak was most prevalent, according to Placer.ai, which tracks foot traffic to restaurants and retailers. “The issue appears to be contained to a particular ingredient and geography, and we remain very confident that any contaminated product related to this outbreak has been removed from our supply chain and is out of all McDonald’s restaurants,” McDonald’s said Sunday. The E. coli outbreak has overshadowed McDonald’s business and came as the chain was struggling to win back customers put off by higher prices. The quarter ended on September 30 and did not include sales following the announcement of the E. coli outbreak.

To distinguish this type of turbid Japanese alcohol from that of the ubiquitous and transparent sake, there are two distinct if slightly misleading categories: seishu (清酒), or clear sake, and doburoku (濁酒). However, when making doburoku, they are all simultaneously placed in with the yeast starter, causing the resulting mixture to be comparatively overflowing with sugars. For nearly as long as rice has been cultivated in Japan, doburoku has existed. In essence, all doburoku made from then on came to be called mitsuzoushu (密造酒), “secretly produced alcohol,” or moonshine. Apple on Monday announced an updated iMac with the company's latest M4 chip. Unlike on the iPhone, where only phones released in the past two years will support Apple Intelligence, all of Apple's computers with the M1 chip and newer since 2020 can run the company's artificial intelligence.
