But the consequences — but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails, and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States. But Donald Trump believes a border deal would hurt his campaign, so he ordered his allies in Congress to kill the deal. Because, you know, they know — they know he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors. They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself.

It wasn’t 1968. It wasn’t even close. While thousands of people joined enthusiastic daily protests in parks and on the streets of Chicago, a city with a deep history of protests, their numbers were fewer than organizers had hoped. All week, demonstrators chanted and marched near the convention site, angrily calling for a cease-fire and an end to U.S. aid for Israel, but failed to seriously disrupt the convention and its celebration of Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s presidential nominee. Though many demonstrators hoped that the convention organizers would grant a speaker of Palestinian descent a chance to address the crowd, that request was ultimately denied.

She used the opening words of the biggest speech of her life to change the subject. Because Harris has been atop her party’s ticket for only about a month, she and Trump have sprinted in a matter of days through campaign elements that normally take months. Harris has raced to define herself and her candidacy, running a campaign heavy on rallies and light on policy and taking questions from the press. Trump, who built a campaign premised on defeating President Biden, has struggled to change up his attacks. Here’s my road map to the rest of the campaign.

While locking their credit won't solve all cybersecurity issues related to stolen Social Security numbers, it's one extra layer of protection parents can implement. Parents can take these steps proactively even if there's nothing to suggest a minor's credit has been compromised such as unexpected credit card solicitations or bills received in the minor's name. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.

5 Takeaways From the Democratic Convention
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Shane Goldmacher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
A month and a day after Democrats made a change, Kamala Harris has the party faithful believing. The vice president’s speech on Thursday capped an ebullient four-day convention in Chicago that showcased the party’s reinvigorated chances against Donald J. Trump in the wake of President Biden’s decision to step aside. Before a convention hall packed with supporters in symbolic suffragette white, Ms. Harris became the second woman to formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination as she tries to break through as the nation’s first female president. Not that she talked about that. Instead, Ms. Harris wrapped herself in the language of patriotism and American exceptionalism, unspooling the story of her upbringing by a single mother to present herself as a leader who understands the strains and aspirations of the middle class.

LONDON — Investors may think that the replacement of Nestle CEO Mark Schneider with company veteran Laurent Freixe is "not such a bad thing," analyst Jon Cox said Friday. "I think confidence has been severely hit in the case and particularly in Schneider," he told "Squawk Box Europe." "I presume most people will think it's not such a bad thing at this point for Schneider to go," he said. Freixe, who joined Nestle in 1986 and served most recently as executive vice president and CEO of the Latin America unit, will take over from Sept. 1. The company has struggled to retain market share as consumers have shifted away from labelled products amid inflationary pressures.

Ella Emhoff's DNC look was customEmhoff, an artist, designer, and the internet's beloved "First Daughter of Bushwick," wore a tea-length gown for her DNC appearance. Ando said the dress took over 75 hours to make and that Emhoff crocheted the flower that sat on one sleeve herself. Outside the DNC, Emhoff's presence in the fashion community has been growing in recent years. Emhoff's father, Doug Emhoff, married Harris in 2014, so Harris has been in her life since she was a teen. With her one-of-a-kind look for the convention, Emhoff is likely to sport more fashion-forward looks throughout Harris' campaign.

The nod to corporate America comes as Democrats try to firm up relations with big business. DealBook has been hitting the phones all week to hear what donors thought of the four-day convention. A flood of donors decided to go only after Harris became the presumptive nominee.

CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced at a news conference in Phoenix Friday that he is suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump. Kennedy insisted that he was not ending his campaign, but he noted that he will withdraw his name from appearing on ballots in swing states. If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming — or helping — President Trump or Vice President Harris. Kennedy running mate Nicole Shanahan praised him following his announcement and urged him to “save our children” in a social media post. But Kennedy’s support for Trump was clear Friday afternoon.

In contrast, at the RNC convention, President Biden was mentioned only twice in four days.”Facts First: Kennedy’s claim about Biden mentions at the Republican National Convention is not even close to true. The Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, said the word “Biden” 12 times in his own convention speech. Trump himself said “Biden” twice in his convention speech (during a single reference), but Kennedy’s claim was about the Republicans’ four-day gathering as a whole. The false claim that Biden was mentioned a total of twice over the four days of the Republican convention has been circulating on social media this week. CNN has not conducted or seen a thorough independent analysis of the words used at the Democratic National Convention, which concluded yesterday.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign for president is entering a new phase, shifting from a 33-day sprint to the convention to something more familiar: Preparing for a debate and pivoting to getting out the vote. On Friday afternoon, Ms. Harris plans to fly back from Chicago to Washington, where she will spend the weekend decompressing from the mind-spinning turn of events that led to her accepting the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday night. She will begin preparing for what will be her first national interview — which she has said will take place by the end of August — and for the Sept. 10 debate with Donald J. Trump, according to campaign officials briefed on her plans who were not authorized to reveal them before they are formally announced. The officials said Ms. Harris will return to the campaign trail next week with events in multiple battleground states, where she will aim to extend the enthusiasm generated at this week’s convention in Chicago.

On Thursday, Nepal’s one-month-old government, led by the country’s largest communist party, which has close ties to Beijing, formally asked China to convert a $216 million loan for the airport into a grant, wiping away the debt. It made the request during a visit by a Chinese delegation including Sun Weidong, China’s vice foreign minister. A few weeks after it opened in January 2023, a domestic flight headed for the city crashed into a river gorge, killing 72 people. The airport has not attracted any regular international flights, dimming the financial outlook for the project. Over the last year, Nepal’s anti-corruption agency and a parliamentary committee started investigations into the airport’s construction.

Though Republicans have branded themselves as the party of capital-P patriotism since the Nixon years, Democrats sought to reclaim American pride this week. A striking number of this year's speakers focused on military might and distinctly American values, from Harris herself to Iraq war veterans. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. For the past decade, Loge said that Democrats have been "shy" or "embarrassed" about embracing classic American patriotism, but that Harris and Walz are attempting to reframe the association with the flag. "Democrats serve too," Kauffman told Business Insider.
