The planned law would force social media platforms to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. The ban was first announced during an emotionally charged parliamentary inquiry into social media, which included testimony from parents of children who had self-harmed due to cyberbullying. “I understand that using social media a lot is not a good thing and I’m working on it,” said Sydney high school student Enie Lam, 16. ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party suspended street protests demanding his release from jail after a sweeping midnight raid by security forces in the capital, Islamabad, in which hundreds of people were arrested, local media reported Wednesday. On Wednesday morning, city workers were cleaning up debris and clearing some of the shipping containers that had blocked roads around the capital. PTI had planned on staging a sit-in in the red zone until the release of Khan, who has been in jail since August last year. PTI’s president for the city of Peshawar in the party’s northern stronghold of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said the party had called off the protest. He said that Bushra Bibi as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, a key Khan ally, had returned “safely” to the province from the capital.

An appeals court on Tuesday agreed to dismiss charges related to Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, effectively ending Special Counsel Jack Smith's prosecution of Trump. A spokesperson for Smith’s office declined to comment. Federal prosecutors in August had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to restore the case. The two remaining criminal cases, the New York case involving hush money payments and a Georgia election interference case, are also in limbo. A New York judge ruled last week postponed Trump's sentencing in that case which was previously scheduled for Nov. 26.

Microsoft faces wide-ranging U.S. antitrust probe
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has opened a broad antitrust investigation into Microsoft , including of its software licensing and cloud computing businesses, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The probe was approved by FTC Chair Lina Khan ahead of her likely departure in January. The FTC fielded complaints about Microsoft last year as it examined the cloud computing market. Until now, Microsoft has been somewhat of an exception to U.S. antitrust regulators' recent campaign against allegedly anticompetitive practices at Big Tech companies. In 2019, the Pentagon awarded it a $10 billion cloud computing contract that Amazon had widely been expected to win.

CNN —The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah is a major diplomatic breakthrough that follows 13 months of escalating conflict, upheaval and displacement in Lebanon. In that time, troops from both sides will retreat from southern Lebanon, while the Lebanese military and families who fled in recent months will move in. Israel’s forces must retreat beyond the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” established by the UN in 2000 following 18 years of Israeli military occupation in southern Lebanon. Israeli aerial attacks have focused on the southern border regions of Lebanon, but have hit targets in the center and the north as well. Another anti-government protest had come and gone in Pakistan’s once peaceful capital, and Saira Bano was ready to get her city back. For four days, Islamabad had been a tense battleground after supporters of a jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, marched into the city. The capital, home to 2.4 million people, became a “container city” as the authorities stacked more than 700 shipping containers to block key routes and maintain order. Schools and shops closed, internet service was cut, and roads teemed with thousands of police officers scrutinizing passers-by. “This is not the Islamabad I grew up in,” said Ms. Bano, a schoolteacher who had to cancel her classes for three consecutive days.

China's industrial profits dropped by 10% in October from a year ago, in another sign that Beijing's stimulus measures have yet to reverse a slump in corporate earnings. Industrial profits are a key gauge of the financial health of factories, mines and utilities in China. In the first ten months, profits at China's industrial firms decreased by 4.3% from a year ago, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement Wednesday. China's consumer price index in October rose slower than expected, edging up 0.3% from a year ago, marking the slowest rise since June. Meanwhile, producer price index fell 2.9% on year, showing that deflation deepened from the 2.8% drop in the prior month.

Mortgage rates dropped last week, and homebuyers jumped off the fence. They drove total mortgage demand up 6.3% compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. While the drop in rates wasn't exactly huge, there was a fair amount of pent-up demand among homebuyers. Last year at this time mortgage rates were higher, but falling. The increase in conventional purchase applications helped push the average purchase loan size to $439,200, its highest level in almost a month," said Joel Kan, an MBA economist in a release.

Despite Dell's strong positioning in AI-related technologies, the company's shares were down as much as 12% in premarket trading after its final quarter revenue outlook fell below Wall Street expectations. His first major global brouhaha since winning reelection posed the following questions that will help define the character of his second term. There’s no guarantee that Canada, Mexico and China will back down immediately. Trump’s trade war rhetoric is a reminder that in his worldview, the United States has few friends — only adversaries against whom it can choose to win or lose. The prime minister therefore has a huge incentive to avoid a trade war that could cause havoc in the Canadian economy. Initial reaction to Trump’s broadside against Canada and Mexico suggests that many observers see his outburst as a negotiating tactic.

It's using decoy drones to outwit Ukrainian defenses, according to the ISW. Around half the drones used to attack Ukraine are decoy drones, a report said. Russia is stepping up its use of decoy drones to distract Ukrainian air defenses in mass aerial attacks, according to The Institute for the Study of War (ISW). This, said the ISW's analysts, suggests that "Russian forces likely used a large number of decoy drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses." The Associated Press in November found that Russia was using swarms of fake drones to surround deadly thermobaric drones, which are highly destructive.

The domestic box office is poised for its biggest Thanksgiving haul since the pandemic thanks to a Polynesian princess, a pair of witches and a revenge-fueled gladiator. Disney's "Moana 2" is set to hit theaters Wednesday and generate between $120 million and $150 million in box office receipts in the U.S. and Canada through Sunday. Box office analysts believe the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday, should easily clear $200 million in ticket sales and could even become the second- or third-highest Thanksgiving period in cinematic history. After ruling the Thanksgiving box office for years with titles from Pixar and Disney Animation, it's failed to live up to expectations with its recent string of releases. In 2016, "Moana" opened over the Thanksgiving holiday, generating $82.1 million.

BYD is asking suppliers to cut prices and Tesla is rolling out more discounts. The price war is putting some smaller Chinese players under financial pressure. BYD and Tesla have been playing a game of how-low-can-you-go on EV prices in China for the past year, and they don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The rivals are asking suppliers to cut prices and rolling out discounts as they prepare for another round in an ongoing EV battle. Ukraine's defense ministry issued a recall of 120mm artillery shells this week, citing defects in a recently delivered batch of rounds. The defective 120mm rounds — light artillery shells that Ukraine typically uses in mortars — were first reported in early November by Censor.Net, a local media outlet run by journalist Yuriy Butusov. Ukroboronprom and the Ukrainian Defense Ministry did not respond to requests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider. Globally, Ukraine's allies have also struggled to quickly scale up production of artillery shells. On November 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said domestic factories had produced 2.5 million artillery shells and mortar rounds in 2024 alone.
