Helping futures for the tech-heavy Nasdaq gain nearly 1%, U.S. two-year Treasury yields tumbled to more than a month low, while futures for the cyclicals-heavy Dow Jones edged lower. Big Tech and growth companies such as Meta Platforms (META.O), Amazon (AMZN.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O) rose between 1% and 2% premarket. Traders' bets are currently equally split between a pause and a 25-basis-point rate hike at the Fed's next meeting in March. The projections of a terminal rate have also receded to just under 5% by June from around 5.5% in September earlier. ET, Dow e-minis were down 48 points, or 0.15%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 5.5 points, or 0.14%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 99.25 points, or 0.84%.

There were multiple trading halts on bank shares as the KBW regional banking index (.KRX) fell 5.4%, and the S&P 500 banking index (.SPXBK) dropped 6%. Hogan said each regional bank has its own exposure to different parts of the market. He added the fate of regional bank stocks will be "case by case" as investors look to see which ones could have the most negative exposure. "First Republic Bank, which has significant exposure to the coastal real estate markets appears to be next on the list".
Few will be shocked if “Tár,” a psychological drama about a famous symphony orchestra conductor, wins Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, and even fewer will be surprised if Cate Blanchett picks up the Best Actress award for playing the title character. She deserves it. “Tár” is much too long (2 hours and 38 minutes) and probably too self-consciously highbrow for mass appeal. This is a film that was made to win critical praise and prestigious prizes, not to draw the large crowds that turned out for other Best Picture nominees this year, such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of the Water.” What recommends the film to people who might otherwise care little about the rarefied world of orchestral music is its timely and sober treatment of the #MeToo era, cancel culture and identity politics.
Ahead of the crucial non-farm payrolls report on Friday, data showed U.S. private payrolls increased more than expected in February, pointing to continued labor market strength. BlackRock's chief investment officer of global fixed income, Rick Rieder, said the Fed could raise rates to 6% and keep them there for an extended period of time to fight inflation. "Unless we get some data over the course of the next two weeks, we really don't know which way we should be landing. Unfortunately the most important piece of the data doesn't come until Friday, that's why we've got a market that's meandering a bit." ET, Dow e-minis were up 33 points, or 0.1%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 4.25 points, or 0.11%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 19.75 points, or 0.16%.

[1/4] Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at Gaylord National Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, U.S., March 4, 2023. The three-day conference illustrated the iron grip he holds over the right-wing, grassroots base of his party and how hard it could be for a challenger to deny Trump the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. DeSantis also attended a gathering for Republican donors in Florida held by the anti-tax group Club for Growth to which Trump was not invited. In his remarks, Bannon maintained that Trump should be the Republican nominee, saying DeSantis and other potential challengers lacked experience. Trump and DeSantis both are scheduled in the coming days to visit Iowa, which holds the first Republican nominating contest next year.

Being mayor of New York comes with lots of media attention, but anyone who has held the job can tell you that the real power is in Albany, the state capital, where the governor and Legislature hold major sway over everything from the subways to the public schools. Mayor Eric Adams was back in Albany this month asking his state overlords to rethink bail-reform measures passed in 2019 that protect crime suspects from pretrial detention. The number of shoplifting complaints in New York City rose by 45% in 2022 to more than 63,000, according to New York City Police Department data. The mayor sees an obvious connection that too many of his fellow liberal Democrats willfully ignore.
A congressional watchdog said AOC might have violated ethics rules in connection to her 2021 Met Gala attendance. The watchdog recommended the House Ethics Committee further review the allegations. The Office of Congressional Ethics also recommended subpoenas to AOC's dress designers. A lawyer for Ocasio-Cortez said in a letter to the House Ethics Committee released Thursday that the congresswoman "finds these delays unacceptable, and she has taken several steps to ensure nothing of this nature will ever happen again." The House Ethics Committee, which released the OCE report and findings on Thursday, said in a statement that it "will refrain from making further public statements on this matter pending completion of its initial review."

Knowing how to talk to chatbots may get you hired as a prompt engineer for generative AI. Prompt engineers are experts in asking AI chatbots — which run on large language models — questions that can produce desired responses. Unlike traditional computer engineers who code, prompt engineers write prose to test AI systems for quirks; experts in generative AI told The Washington Post that this is required to develop and improve human-machine interaction models. Prompt engineering may not be 'the job of the future'Some academics question how effective prompt engineers really are in testing AI. Companies in a variety of industries are hiring prompt engineersThat isn't stopping companies across industries from hiring prompt engineers.

There’s no dancing around it: Donald Trump remains the standard-bearer of the Republican Party. Ms. Haley was a popular governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 and comported herself well as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Trump administration. She previously said she wouldn’t run for president if it meant challenging Mr. Trump for the nomination. The former president announced his candidacy in November. Ms. Haley apparently changed her mind and announced her own bid last week.

CHICAGO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - United Airlines (UAL.O) launched on Tuesday a more than $100 million investment fund to support start-ups focused on the research and production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Chicago-based carrier along with inaugural partners such as Air Canada (AC.TO), Boeing (BA.N), General Electric (GE.N) JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) and Honeywell (HON.O) have invested in the United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund, it said. United said the fund was open to investment by companies across industries and would prioritize investment in new technology and "proven" producers. United's Chief Sustainability Officer Lauren Riley said the investment fund was aimed at scaling up the supply of SAF. However, as of last December, the total volume of SAF used in its operations remained less than 0.1% of its total aviation fuel usage.

"Woman King" director Gina Prince-Bythewood is the only woman in the running for the director award, but the outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer category features all female nominees. They’re one of the only big award shows that actually shares voting members with the Academy," Riley said. "The Screen Actors' Guild... obviously share some overlap... but BAFTAs really are first look at what the Oscars may be thinking."
