Former President Donald Trump's lawyers are trying to get the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case thrown out. Trump's lawyers on Thursday filed several motions to dismiss the case, including one centering on the argument that Trump should be entitled to presidential immunity. The motion acknowledges a Washington, DC appeals court decision on February 6. AdvertisementNow, on the Mar-a-Lago case, Trump's lawyers are arguing that the DC appeals court "erred in finding that President Trump was not entitled to presidential immunity." Trump's lawyers have also argued that the case should be dismissed, based on their allegation that special counsel Jack Smith was unlawfully appointed.

"Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled last Friday that "unborn children" are included in a state law allowing for wrongful death lawsuits by the parents of deceased children. Trump's post followed waves of criticism from President Joe Biden and other Democrats, who say the Republican ex-president's involvement in canceling longstanding abortion rights laid the foundation for the Alabama ruling. At least three IVF clinics in the state paused their fertility treatments following the ruling, out of concern about their legal exposure. Democrats accuse Republicans of seeking to further erode abortion access and threaten related rights, pointing to the Alabama ruling as evidence.

Most companies involved in the world's largest trial of a four-day working week have made the policy permanent, according to a new report. Of the 61 British companies that took part in a six-month pilot in 2022, at least 54 (89%) said the policy was still in place, while 31 firms (51%) said they had permanently switched to a four-day working week. The companies involved were invited to take part in a follow-up study one year on from the world's biggest trial of a shorter working week to date. "Overall results have held and in some cases have even continued to improve," Schor said in a statement. Job satisfaction and sleep problems nudged down a bit, but the bulk of the original improvement remains."

The big storyDealmaker's delighttatomm/iStock, Tyler Le/BIThree monster deals announced in less than a week has Wall Street wondering: Is M&A back? But after a dreadful 2022 and 2023, dealmaking is showing signs of life, Business Insider's Theron Mohamed writes. Capital One, Truist, and Walmart announced acquisitions totaling $53 billion this week, leaving bankers hopeful the good times (and fees) are back. Deals represent an exit opportunity for companies, giving their investors (some of whom are employees) a chance to cash out.

Walgreens has the dubious distinction of being one of the stocks that has had the shortest duration in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At $22, Walgreens has the lowest stock price in the index, which traditionally would make it a target for replacement. "Since the indexes are price weighted, the Index Committee evaluates stock price when considering a company for inclusion. Right now, the highest priced stock, UnitedHealth Group , is more than 23 times the value of the lowest priced stock, Walgreens. Walmart is cutting prices on essentials like eggs and breadInflation has cooled in recent months after soaring during the pandemic. "Some of this is the result of customer acquisition becoming more modest, and some is because of the continued financial pressure on core Walmart shoppers which is seeing them cut back on non-essential spending," he wrote. Saunders noted that lower levels of inflation would make it harder for Walmart to acquire new customers. "This essentially puts Walmart in the position of having to work far harder and more creatively to generate growth," he wrote.

AdvertisementWalmart would not provide details on its points-based attendance system to Business Insider. AdvertisementSimilar to Walmart's policy, Amazon uses a points-based attendance system that could land employees in hot water if they hit eight points in a rolling 60-day period, according to the company. Many companies, including mid-size ones, have started to implement a points-based system to track lateness and absences, Zambrano noted. Amazon disputed the description of its points-based attendance system as totally "automated." "The attendance system works very similar to a standard time clock system," Stephenson, Amazon's spokesperson, told Business Insider.

After Walmart 's earnings report impressed Wall Street on Tuesday, CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC's Jim Cramer that his company has unique advantages in the advertising space. "When you grow your digital reach, and you've got an e-commerce business that's scaling like ours is," McMillon said, "You get an opportunity to sell advertisements, and we can connect the dots for advertisers." Walmart's global advertising business climbed 28% for the year, McMillon said, adding that the big-box retailer's e-commerce sales topped $100 billion for the first time. The company also announced on Tuesday it would acquire TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion to further grow its ad business. Walmart has agreed to buy TV maker Vizio , the companies announced Tuesday, as the largest U.S. retailer grows its high-profit ad business. Walmart will acquire Vizio for $2.3 billion, or $11.50 per share, in cash. But in buying the company, Walmart touted the potential to boost its ad business through Vizio's SmartCast Operating System, which allows users to stream free ad-supported content on their TVs. As it pushes for higher profits, the retail titan has tried to expand its media business Walmart Connect, which comes with bigger profit margins than selling groceries or clothing. In a news release, Walmart said Vizio's SmartCast system has 18 million active accounts.

A federal appeals court agreed to rehear a challenge by two conservative groups to Nasdaq's board diversity rule related to the disclosure of women and minority membership on boards of companies listed on the stock exchange. The 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, in its order Monday night setting a rehearing, also vacated a decision in October upholding the Nasdaq rule by a three-judge panel from the appeals court, which encompasses Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Nasdaq rule requires companies to disclose details about the diversity of their boards of directors, and to either have a minimum number of women and minorities on their boards or explain why they do not. "NASDAQ's rule promotes racial discrimination and polarizing personal disclosures and it is to be hoped that this rule is struck down," Blum said. The SEC and Nasdaq did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the rehearing order.

But as data emerges on degreeless hiring, there are signs that some of these efforts may be falling short. It's based on limited data and doesn't consider alternative pathways that people without degrees use to join organizations, such as through apprenticeships and internships. But it's still a snapshot look at how some of the top employers in the U.S. are doing in their efforts to hire more workers based on skills versus degree attainment. Rather, it implies managers may be reticent to hire people without degrees, absent specific policies to assess these workers' skills. Companies that have been successful with skill-based hiring also articulate clearly the skills they require for a job, even before posting it.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Historic hearings are opening on Monday at the United Nations’ top court into the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of lands sought for a Palestinian state. Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. It has built 146 settlements across the West Bank, according to watchdog group Peace Now, many of which resemble fully developed suburbs and small towns. An additional 200,000 Israelis live in settlements built in east Jerusalem that Israel considers to be neighborhoods of its capital. Israel’s annexation of east Jerusalem, home to the city’s most sensitive holy sites, is not internationally recognized.

Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said. In addition to new stores, many existing locations are being upgraded to Walmart's "store of the future" concept, including 650 projects this year.
