Four years after the radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsed, a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is shining a light on the unprecedented failures that caused its destruction. The zinc gradually lost its hold on the cables suspending the telescope’s main platform over the reflector dish. The telescope was built in the 1960s with money from the Defense Department amid a push to develop anti-ballistic missile defenses. Following a few other cable failures, the federal agency decided to begin a plan to decommission the telescope in November 2020. In 2022, the National Science Foundation said it would not rebuild Puerto Rico's renowned radio telescope.

The number of illnesses in the E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 104, up from 90 at last count, health officials said in an update Wednesday. The outbreak was announced last month, though some cases date to September, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC and McDonald's have both pointed to slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders as the likely source of the outbreak. In the last week, McDonald’s has resumed selling Quarter Pounders with slivered onions at the affected locations, relying on a different supplier for the onions. Liberty Media announced Wednesday that it's spinning off most assets besides Formula One auto racing into a separate publicly traded company, called Liberty Live, and that CEO Greg Maffei is stepping down at year-end. After the split, Liberty Media will hold Formula One, which Liberty acquired in 2016 and later spun out as a tracking stock, and MotoGP, upon the closing of that transaction. The Liberty Media and Liberty Live split is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, and the sale of Liberty Broadband to Charter is projected to be completed in mid-2027. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) has been getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. Things have recently accelerated in November, and Tuesday, the IGV Software ETF was one of just three ETFs we track to make new all-time highs. Within the IGV Software ETF, it also has the third biggest weighting, but it's behind both CRM and ORCL. More importantly, MSFT has been noticeably lagging the IGV ETF across various time frames. The potential good news is that: 1. the ratio line remains in a long-term uptrend and 2. the last two oversold conditions happened near major relative trading lows.

The proposed class-action lawsuit filed Monday claims Chipotle understated customer dissatisfaction regarding its “highly inconsistent” portion sizes in official disclosures. “First, there was never a directive to provide less to our customers,” Niccol said during the earnings call. After that earnings call on October 30, Chipotle stock dipped 7.86%. The proposed class action would make eligible anyone who purchased or sold Chipotle stock from February 8 to October 29, 2024.
