REUTERS/Tingshu Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) - J.P.Morgan and ANZ on Friday raised their 2023 economic growth forecast for China, after August economic numbers offered some signs of stabilization in the world's second-largest economy. Both raised their GDP forecast by 20 basis points each to 5% and 5.1% respectively, with JPM saying notable recovery in retail sales and rise in service activity were the biggest surprises. Zhu said additional fiscal and housing policy relaxation like subsidy for product-specific consumption support, relaxation of home buying restrictions, sales restrictions and price controls in tier-1 and 2 cities may follow in the near term. Goldman Sachs kept its third-quarter GDP growth forecast unchanged at 4.9% but said China's economy is still in a tug of war between persistent growth headwinds and increasing policy support.

Instacart raises IPO price range after robust Arm debut
  + stars: | 2023-09-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The price hike signals robust investor demand for San Francisco-based Instacart, which is looking to finally list its shares this month after years of waiting in the wings. Investors will be pinning hopes on robust debuts from Instacart, Klaviyo and Neumora to carry the momentum in the IPO market after Arm's strong showing on Thursday. Instacart said it is now seeking to sell 22 million shares at $28 to $30 each. At the top end of the range, the IPO will fetch $660 million compared with the earlier target of $616 million. The company's raised valuation target, however, would still be just one-fourth of the $39 billion it was worth after its last funding round more than two years ago.

"What Kevin just said right now ... to that point: 'If somebody wants to file a motion to vacate, file the fucking motion to vacate,' and that's it. I've been here," McCarthy told reporters. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks to the media on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 2, 2019. While a fight among Republicans on spending was holding up action in the House, the Senate on Thursday in an overwhelming 91-7 vote advanced its first package of spending bills. They believe the House will pass compromise legislation at the $1.59 trillion level set by McCarthy and Biden.

2 Senate Republican said on Wednesday. That will be particularly challenging as some hard-line House Republicans are vowing to withhold votes for a stopgap, known as a "continuing resolution," without which the government could shutdown beginning in October. The Senate is only now beginning to move forward on its first spending legislation, which the House managed to pass only one bill before Republican infighting consumed the process. Thune said the Senate is giving the 222-212 Republican House majority room to maneuver on spending for now, but warned that failure to make progress soon could force Congress to resort to an omnibus bill that Republicans have vowed to avoid. Democratic Senate incumbents are vulnerable in as many as eight states next year, while Republicans are not at risk.

The Fed may cut rates as soon as year-end as a recession hits the US economy, according to J.P. Morgan Asset Management's CIO. Such a move would be similar to how the Fed dropped its "transitory" call on inflation and started raising rates, he said. "They're going to tell us that they're going to keep rates higher for longer until inflation is at their target. "I think this time for them to cut rates, they're going to have to see unemployment go up. So it's possible that they may actually tip the economy into recession first before they start cutting rates, which would be something new for them.

All this uncertainty has led markets to lack conviction, flip-flopping as conflicting narratives around inflation rates and Fed hikes prevail. But this week’s readings — just a few days ahead of the Fed’s September policy meeting -— could give the markets direction. “Getting core inflation to 2% won’t come quickly, and upside risks remain,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. And while the Fed generally looks at core inflation, the impact of crude prices often extends into other areas of the economy. Wriston's financial innovations helped create the modern Eurodollar market — a vast offshore realm of financial transactions in US dollars happening outside of US borders. As he explained in 1979, the "current banking network, with its Euromarkets and its automated payments system" seemed dull and technical, but it had immense political consequences. Wriston helped rebuild this clanking machine into an engine of transformation, welding disjointed national markets into a true world economy. It began to develop a new kind of sanction, which used its control of "dollar clearing" to force international banks to implement US policy outside its borders. Instead of the stateless, government-less world that Wriston envisioned, the internationalization of the US dollar became the precedent for a massive transformation of America's financial power.

Gold listless as investors await U.S. data for Fed policy guidance
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices settled into a holding pattern on Tuesday as investors awaited U.S. inflation figures that could provide an updated view on interest rates after the Federal Reserve kept the door open for further policy tightening. Spot gold was flat at $1,921.25 per ounce, as of 0510 GMT, while U.S. gold futures eased 0.2% to $1,944.30. Demand for non-interest-bearing gold could take a hit if the Fed further raises U.S. interest rates to quell inflation. Although, a sustained push higher in gold prices likely needs to be catalyzed by an eventual turn towards a Fed cutting cycle, they added. Elsewhere, spot silver rose 0.2% to $23.12 per ounce, platinum climbed 0.2% to $899.90 per ounce and palladium added 0.2% to $1,220.64 per ounce.

The yen surged after BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said the central bank could end its policy of negative interest rates when the achievement of its 2% inflation target is in sight. Global shares, as reflected by the MSCI All-World index (.MIWD00000PUS), rose 0.1%, supported by a bounce in stocks in Europe, where the STOXX 600 (.STOXX) gained 0.3%. Last week, the STOXX posted its longest stretch of losses in 5-1/2 years. Economists polled by Reuters expect consumer prices to have risen by 3.6% from last year, up from July's 3.2% reading. The ECB meets on Thursday to set interest rates and markets have all but priced out any chance of a hike.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde speaks to the media following the Governing Council's monetary policy meeting at the ECB headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, July 27, 2023. "It's such a close call between the pause and the rate hike," said ING's global head of macro Carsten Brzeski. Traders are torn but favour an ECB pause, pricing in around a 40% chance of a hike. For many economists, one thing is clear: if the ECB has further tightening to deliver, September is likely its last chance. Even the hawks, keeping a hike on the table, say fresh ECB projections on Thursday are key to the decision.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said Monday that while the U.S. economy is doing well, it would be a "huge mistake" to believe that it will last for years. Healthy consumer balance sheets and rising wages are supporting the economy for now, but there are risks ahead, said Dimon, who was speaking at a financial conference in New York. "To say the consumer is strong today, meaning you are going to have a booming environment for years, is a huge mistake," he said. But the U.S. economy has proven resilient, leading more economists to expect that a recession might be avoided. "If and when you have a recession, which you're eventually going to have, you'll have a real normal credit cycle," Dimon said.
