Wait, is America actually banning TikTok now?
  + stars: | 2024-03-08 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Washington CNN —House lawmakers are moving with dizzying speed with a plan that could ban TikTok from the United States. But could a TikTok ban really happen? A man walks past the headquarters of ByteDance, the parent company of video sharing app TikTok, in Beijing. They allege TikTok poses a national security threat because the Chinese government could use its intelligence laws against ByteDance, forcing it to hand over the data of US TikTok users. By that precedent, it would be unconstitutional for the government to ban TikTok even if it were blatantly a direct mouthpiece for the Chinese government, Jaffer said.

If enacted, the bill would give ByteDance 165 days, or a little more than five months, to sell TikTok. The legislation also has the support of the White House and House Speaker Mike Johnson. House lawmakers voted unanimously in the same session Thursday to advance a second bill, one that would limit US companies’ ability to sell Americans’ personal information to foreign adversaries. Speaking to reporters on the Capitol steps Thursday, Gallagher rejected characterizations of the bill as a TikTok ban. A legislative factsheet from the sponsors of the House bill claims the proposal does not censor speech.

Haiti’s security crisis is reaching a breaking point. An alliance of armed gangs is pressing the country’s prime minister to resign, placing the United States in the middle of a power struggle gripping the country. Aiming to ease the standoff, the Biden administration is increasing pressure on Prime Minister Ariel Henry to enable a transfer of power. The United States was not actively “calling on him or pushing for him to resign,” Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, said. The standoff emerged after Mr. Henry, who has been backed by the United States since becoming Haiti’s de facto leader after the assassination in 2021 of President Jovenel Moïse, was unable to return to Haiti on Tuesday because of doubts over safely landing at the airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince, which has been targeted in recent days by gang assaults.

Starting this fall, however, all the flu shots distributed in the United States will probably contain only three strains, and the change is because of Covid-19. It’s not quick or easy to change how flu vaccines are manufactured, and those changes require regulatory review and approval. The committee is meeting Tuesday to discuss next steps and vote on flu vaccine recommendations for the fall. “Anytime these flu vaccines are being produced, they are – depending on which vaccines you are talking about – using live or attenuated virus, and you do have to grow it,” she said. But as the authors note, any such change would require testing and regulatory approval, and for that reason, it’s not likely we’ll see the return of four-strain flu shots any time soon.

A judge on Friday temporarily blocked the Texas attorney general from forcing an L.G.B.T.Q. organization to turn over documents on transgender minors and the gender-affirming care they may be receiving. In Texas, medical care for gender transition is prohibited for minors under a law passed last year. The judge added that such an ask would infringe on the group’s constitutional rights and that its members would be subject to “gross invasions” of privacy. In a statement, PFLAG’s lawyers, including the American Civil Liberties Union, said they were “grateful that the court saw the harm the attorney general’s office’s intrusive demands posed.”

While loneliness among older adults has been an issue for years, the pandemic exacerbated it across all age groups. Some experts told me that cities could help counter loneliness with policies that bolster senior centers and ensure accessibility to vital resources and that governments should invest more in mitigating loneliness for older adults. That's largely why Lamy felt compelled to organize an easy way for older adults in the community to meet and talk to one another. What we know is that isolation and loneliness among older people tend to lead to pretty serious health complications very quickly. So there is a real reason for us to try to help older people find connection."

Computer science is not a new major at top schools, but with AI jobs in high-demand, there's a growing list of colleges and universities offering a four-year "AI" degree specifically. These programs generally move beyond the foundations of computer science to home in on topics such as machine learning, computing algorithms, data analytics and advanced robotics. Purdue University offers an AI undergraduate major, while many colleges and universities offer AI classes within their computer science department, even if there's not a dedicated major. The rise of AI-specific degree programs comes as companies are short on talent for this fast-developing field. According to the Georgetown University Center for Security and Emerging Technology, AI degrees have bucked the general trend in education since 2011, with positive degree conferral growth versus negative growth across all degree areas.
