After all, his entire personal and professional life had been in Vancouver, Canada, the 33-year-old told Business Insider via email. Last October, after several months of splitting his time between Canada and LA, Martin and his husband secured visas and moved from their Vancouver suburb to West Hollywood. While he's not a fan of LA's rent costs and the US healthcare system, he said the move has had a "life-changing" impact on one thing: his social life. Business Insider asked Martin what the biggest pros and cons have been of his Canada-to-California move, and whether the improvement to his social life has offset the downsides. Their social life is a big reason why.

Since 2009, rank-and-file lawmakers' salaries have remained flat at $174,000 because government funding bills have included a provision explicitly blocking a modest pay increase that would otherwise happen. Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas is among the current and former lawmakers suing the United States over their salaries. "People who don't like it should take it up with James Madison," Cuccinelli added, referring to the fourth US president and the original proponent of the 27th Amendment. That suit also alleged a violation of the 27th Amendment, though a judge later dismissed the case.

Gas prices have surged to four-month highs. Don’t panic

A gas price spike might be the last thing President Joe Biden needs to convince skeptical voters about his economic agenda. But experts say there is no reason to panic about gas prices, at least not yet. Gas prices always rise at this time of the year. Of course, there’s always the potential for unexpected events that could spike gas prices. If anything, De Haan said the earlier-than-expected jump in gas prices this year could cause prices to peak sooner than usual.

A TikTok spokesperson told Business Insider it expects the bill to pass, saying it had a "predetermined outcome." The movement to ban TikTok in the US has been pushed by legislators who believe the company will hand over user data to the Chinese government. This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

Prospective buyers are also balking at paying such high mortgage rates, especially when national home prices are near record levels, fueling an affordability crisis. AdvertisementOffering portable mortgages would enable hesitant sellers to keep their rock-bottom mortgage rates when they move, potentially boosting overall inventory and transaction volumes. She suggested the best fix for the frozen housing market will be if inflation cools, the Fed cuts interest rates, and mortgage rates fall to historical norms. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored enterprises that direct the mortgage market, would have to be on board to make mortgage portability a reality, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

mary zieglerWell, I think it’s much easier to ban abortion than it is to enforce a criminal law against abortion. mary zieglerNo, I think that’s right. If our abortion politics don’t reflect our abortion views, what does that tell us about the health of the democracy? We’ve seen upwards of 10 states — I think it’s 14 or 15 that have changed their definition of abortion in abortion restrictive states since Dobbs. So, the idea is that abortions that are presented as life saving either are not abortions or are simply pretexts for abortion that’s elective.

If enacted, the bill would give ByteDance 165 days, or a little more than five months, to sell TikTok. The legislation also has the support of the White House and House Speaker Mike Johnson. House lawmakers voted unanimously in the same session Thursday to advance a second bill, one that would limit US companies’ ability to sell Americans’ personal information to foreign adversaries. Speaking to reporters on the Capitol steps Thursday, Gallagher rejected characterizations of the bill as a TikTok ban. A legislative factsheet from the sponsors of the House bill claims the proposal does not censor speech.

When emotions get too big for speech, you sing; when too big even for song, you dance. But what if the emotions are huge from the get-go? Mortgage applications to purchase a home increased 11% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. There were 14.8% more homes actively for sale in February compared with the same time last year, according to Realtor.com. Notably, homes priced in the $200,000 to $350,000 range grew by 25% from a year ago, outpacing all other price categories. While a number of AI systems have been found to discriminate, tipping the scales in favor of certain races, genders or incomes, there’s scant government oversight. Those bills, along with the over 400 AI-related bills being debated this year, were largely aimed at regulating smaller slices of AI. The use of AI to make consequential decisions — what the bills call “automated decision tools” — is pervasive but largely hidden. The AI was trained to assess new resumes by learning from past resumes — largely male applicants. Requirements to routinely test an AI system aren’t in most of the legislative proposals, nearly all of which still have a long road ahead.

One Leafy Green Needs Refrigeration to Prevent E.Coli

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterHealthDayMONDAY, March 4, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Salad lovers, take note: Lettuce is more vulnerable to E. coli contamination than other leafy greens, researchers report. Other leafy greens – spinach, kale and collards – are more resistant to E. coli, a bacteria with toxic strains that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. On kale and collards, E. coli grows slower in warmer temperatures, but can survive longer under refrigeration, researchers found. People can protect themselves by rinsing lettuce, Dong said, although she warned that E. coli bacteria tend to attach themselves tightly to lettuce leaves. Consumers also should store their lettuce in the fridge and pay attention to any food safety recalls involving leafy greens, researchers said.

Those actions, the state court ruled, violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment and left Trump ineligible to appear on the state’s ballot. Monday’s Supreme Court decision appeared certain to shut down those and other efforts to remove the frontrunner for the GOP nomination from the ballot. Supreme Court avoids insurrectionist debateThe Supreme Court’s opinion doesn’t directly address whether Trump’s actions on January 6 qualified as an “insurrection” – skirting an issue that the courts in Colorado wrestled with. “While the Supreme Court allowed Donald Trump back on the ballot on technical legal grounds, this was in no way a win for Trump,” Noah Bookbinder, the group’s president said. That decision, they said, wasn’t before the Supreme Court in the case and would “insulate all alleged insurrectionists” from future challenges.
