Public schools are not Sunday schools, and families should feel free to send their children to school without worrying about state officials interfering in their choices about religious instruction. These politically conservative state officials are seemingly making a show of testing the limits of government-sponsored religious instruction and exercise in public schools, emboldened by the US Supreme Court’s recent decisions. CNN —A video-gaming Italian teenager will become the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint after his cause for canonization was approved by church authorities. Often depicted wearing jeans and trainers, his story is seen as helpful for the Catholic Church as it seeks to better connect with the younger generation in a digital age, and he’s become popular with Catholic youth groups. In May, a second miracle attributed to Acutis was recognized by Pope Francis, a decision which paved the way for him to be declared a saint. He was reportedly healed after his mother said she prayed to Acutis to intercede and help heal her son. Her mother said she prayed for her daughter’s recovery at the tomb of Acutis in Assisi.

With a defiant flurry of speechifying, Stephen K. Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald J. Trump, reported to prison on Monday to begin a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress, days after the Supreme Court rejected his last-ditch effort to avoid incarceration. Mr. Bannon arrived outside the federal lockup in Danbury, Conn. — a low-security facility about 60 miles north of Manhattan — before noon, and used his last moments of freedom to host a loud rally and live-streamed news conference, surrounded by supporters waving flags and ringing cowbells. Standing alongside Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right congresswoman from Georgia, and Bernard B. Kerik, the former New York police commissioner who spent three years imprisoned on fraud charges, Mr. Bannon predicted big victories for Republicans in this year’s election. “Victory or death,” Mr. Bannon said, just before being blessed by a priest. “We either win or we’re going to have the death of a constitutional republic.”

But the court’s opinion also makes clear that this ruling is not a death knell for Smith’s case. Smith charged Trump with engaging in a “criminal scheme” to subvert the 2020 election; Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court held that a president enjoyed civil immunity for all “official acts.” Now, in Trump v. United States, the court grappled with which “official” acts should also receive criminal immunity. In order to settle the extent of Trump’s immunity, Chutkan should expeditiously schedule the mini-trial to hear witness testimony and receive other relevant evidence from both parties. In response to Trump’s assertion of civil immunity there, the DC Circuit put in place a lengthy discovery schedule for the lower court to determine the extent of Trump’s civil immunity.
