For months, European business leaders have watched as Donald J. Trump paved a path back to the White House by doubling down on an “America First” economic policy, putting protectionism and business-friendly tax and regulatory pledges high on the agenda. With the U.S. presidential inauguration less than two months away, they are now furiously lobbying policymakers in Brussels with an appeal of their own: Put Europe First. Nothing has galvanized the European business community quite as urgently as the prospect of a second Trump presidency, this time with Mr. Trump wielding bolder promises to disrupt the global economic order in ways that threaten to leave Europe lagging even further behind. At a business conference in Paris this week, hundreds of corporate chiefs and lobby groups from France, Germany and Italy gathered to discuss just that. They described Mr. Trump’s election as a “wake-up call” for Europe to get its house in order — or face a painful economic fallout.

Russian President Vladimir Putin this week indicated he's willing to take part in negotiations. "Given its own track record in Ukraine, Russia has a history of taking 'a crunch at a time,'" Paul Cormarie, a policy analyst at the RAND Corporation, told BI. AdvertisementPutin has said that as a condition of any peace deal, Ukraine must agree to remain neutral. If Trump takes Ukrainian NATO membership off the table, a different type of security deal could still be negotiated, said Cormarie. A truce containing a watered-down security deal for Ukraine would likely only mean a pause in the war while Russia regathers its strength.

Musk recently said his choice for the influential Treasury secretary role would be Howard Lutnick. As President-elect Donald Trump assembles the key players to drive his new administration's agenda, Elon Musk is rarely far away. Trump tapped hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, the founder and chief executive of Key Square Group, to be his next Treasury secretary on Friday. Bessent, a Wall Street veteran and a top economic advisor to Trump, emerged as a favorite of the president-elect while on the campaign trail this year. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump sought advice from Wall Street leaders for the Treasury spot, and his advisors told him that analysts would view Bessent as a stabilizing figure.

For many Americans, housing costs aren't just another expense — they shape how the rest of the budget comes together. Yet figuring out how much you can reasonably afford to spend on housing has become increasingly complicated in recent years, as shelter costs continue to rise. If you earn $80,000 a year — the median household income — a decades-old rule of thumb suggests spending no more than 30% of your income on housing, or about $2,000 per month. But for many earners, that's far from realistic, especially in large cities where housing prices have surged the most. As a result, nearly a third of American households are now considered "cost burdened," meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing, according to the most recent U.S. Census data.

Microsoft on Friday started letting people test Recall, its so-called photographic memory search feature for the latest Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft first touted Recall in May as a prominent feature that would only be available for cutting-edge Copilot+ PCs running the Windows 11 operating system, like the latest Surface Pro. A backlash from cybersecurity experts about the potential risks of Recall, however, led Microsoft to revamp it. Copilot+ PCs with AMD or Intel chips are out of luck for now. The Latest FAFSA Form is Available. It Works Fine.

Last year, in a fit of masochism, I tried to become the first person in the United States to fill out a FAFSA (short for Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at the precise moment the Department of Education unveiled a long-delayed overhaul. I failed in my New Year’s Eve quest because the site wasn’t working, and the experience was a harbinger for millions of others. The rollout of the new FAFSA was one of the most epic digital fiascos of our time, right up there with the Obamacare website’s disastrous debut and the Equifax breach. At one school’s FAFSA completion event, only 20 percent of students finished. This week, the department tried again, opening the gates to the FAFSA website after months of additional revisions and multiple rounds of beta testing.

The sweeping tariffs that President-elect Donald J. Trump imposed in his first term on foreign metals, machinery, clothing and other products were intended to have maximum impact around the world. They sought to shutter foreign factories, rework international supply chains and force companies to make big investments in the United States. But for many businesses, the most important consequences of the tariffs, enacted in 2018 and 2019, unfolded just a few blocks from the White House. In the face of pushback from companies reliant on foreign products, the Trump administration set up a process that allowed them to apply for special exemptions. The stakes were high: An exemption could relieve a company of tariffs as high as 25 percent, potentially giving it a big advantage over competitors.

3 charts that help explain fluoride in drinking water
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Soph Warnes | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
According to CDC figures, as of 2022, 72% of the US population receives fluoridated drinking water. There are 36,767 water systems in 36 states with publicly available information on the CDC‘s website, a small slice of the estimated number of drinking water systems in the US. In Kentucky, 93.8% of these reported water systems are fluoridated, and at the bottom end, only 3.7% of water systems reported in Alaska are fluoridated. From the publicly available data on water system fluoride levels, two water systems, both located in South Carolina, reported fluoride concentration levels above WHO guidelines. A 2010 Nevada study found that living in a community with fluoridated drinking water was associated with lower incidences of decayed, missing or filled teeth.

Russia has fired about 60 North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine this year, according to a Ukrainian defense official.
